Connie’s Rules for Online Engagement & Learning

Remember that you are a professional online – look professional, post professional and talk professional.

Refrain from getting to be too open. You can mention when you get a grande decaf peppermint mocha at Sbux, but that’s about all. You want to be personable enough to be known as a human being but aloof enough to remain professional.

Never, never, never, never give out your home address, or home phone (if you still have one).

Refer to reputable websites when giving information for further learning. Avoid blogs unless the blogger is a professional and evidence based ~ not just opinionated.

Be responsive, timely and friendly. Use emoticons to enhance familiarity with tone.

What are Emoticons?

Emoticons are a pictorial representation of a facial expression using punctuation marks, letters, and numbers, usually written to express a person’s feelings or mood.

A Word About Social Media & HIPAA…………………..

Use caution and be aware that you could become involved in a HIPAA violation online if you:

o Contribute to a client/patient’s blog or Facebook.

o Posting information regarding clients or patients on your own social media pages.

o Uploading photos of mothers, babies, breastfeeding, cesareans etc can be cause for patients to file complaints against YOU with the Office for Civil Rights within the Department of Health & Human Services.

Why Should We Care ?

HIPAA’s privacy regulations apply to healthcare providers, defined as: “a provider of medical or health services…and any other person or organization who furnishes, bills, or is paid for health care in the normal course of business.” 45 C.F.R. 160.103

HIPAA provides severe penalties for the dissemination of protected health information (PHI).

Fines of $100 per disclosure of PHI and up to $25,000 for multiple violations in the same year. 42 U.S.C. § 1320(d)(5).

Fines up to $250,000 and/or 10 years imprisonment for knowingly misusing individually identifiable PHI. 42 U.S.C. § 1320(d)(6).

The rise of social networks like Facebook and Twitter highlights our society's desire to reconnect and share stories and information in new and interesting ways.

A 2011 QuantiaMD survey found that 87 percent of physicians use social media personally, while 67 percent use it professionally.

Practitioners who have embraced this technology are now able to address not only the individual information needs of a single patient but can deliver messages instantaneously to an entire community.

The new media have caught on for a reason. Knowledge is increasing exponentially; human brainpower and waking hours are not. Fortunately, the Internet and information technologies are helping us manage, search and retrieve our collective intellectual output at different scales, from Twitter and previews to e-books and online encyclopedias. Far from making us stupid, these technologies are the only things that will keep us smart.
