Artist’s profile >Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Wisconsin, raised in Virginia and studied in Chicago and New York (but she generally worked with the American southwest and particularly New Mexico.)

>She was one of the most famous women artists of the 20th century, especially for her desert-inspired images. Some of these were paintings of flowers or hills, such as Cottonwood III (1944).

Artist profile 2 O'Keefe married with a photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz in 1924,

and he was an ardent promoter of her work. A few years later she moved to New Mexico. O'Keeffe received the Presidential

Medal of Freedom. She died on March 6, 1986.

City Night“It is a striking work, depicting New York cityscape in intimidating fashion. The canvas is dominated by towering skyscrapers, painted from the perspective of a person on the ground looking up, a technique that instills a sense of majesty in O’Keeffe’s subject matter, the city. Two of the skyscrapers are dark, situated on the left and right foreground, while the third is painted white, placed on the right hand side of the canvas in the background. The arrangement of the skyscrapers- their reach towards the sky, their tendency to consume space- compels the observer to feel claustrophobic, desperate for a breath of air. Interestingly enough, the skyscrapers in City Night do not emit light, or steam, or smoke. They do not display any sign that life has made its mark on them. There are no windows, or aesthetic detail, only cold, solid, and neutral blocks of black, grey and white, self-contained in relation to their environment, simple in their geometric perfection.”(From: http://mujtabasays.tumblr.com/post)
