Geometry in the REAL World

Luke Campbell

Block Four

Star Wars

Point• a position in space

• Alderaan was the point in space where the line of the Death Star ray ended.

Line

• a straight set of points that extends off into infinity in both directions

• The line created by the Death Star continued on endlessly.

Plane

•  a flat surfaces that stretches off into infinity

• The plane Tatoonie was a flat wasteland that seemed to stretch endlessly to the sky.

Angle

• the union of two rays with a common endpoint.

• When the lightsabers crashed, many angles were formed.

Perpendicular Lines

• two lines are perpendicular if the angle between them is 90 degees

• When Luke raised his lightsaber, two perpendicular lines were formed.

Parallel Lines

• two lines are parallel if they are in the same plane and never intersect

• As the Jedis stood ready for battle, their sabers were parallel to each other.

Triangle

• a three sided polygon

• When the enginers for the tie fighter designed the ship, the hexagonal wings were made with six triangular panels.

Right Triangle

• a triangle that contains a right angle

• When Luke brought his father a rectangular cake, it was divided into two right triangles symbolizing the two sides of the force.

Square

• a quadrilateral with four equal sides and four 90 degree angles

• The Imperial Class Star Destroyer II has an interior room shaped like a square.

Pentagon

• a five sided polygon

• The Tyridium Shuttle has a verticle fin which is in the shape of an irregular pentagon.

Hexagon

• a polygon with six sides

• The tie fighter’s wing is in the shape of a hexagon.

Rectangle

• a quadrilateral with four 90 degree angles

• Star Wars Turbo Tank Vehicle has several windows and doors in the shape of rectangles.

Trapezoid

• a quadrilateral that has exactly two sides parallel

• Out of his trapezoid shaped window, Darth Vader watched the dog fight in 3-D.

Parallelogram

• a quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel

• Many of the panels on the Millennium Falcon are parallelograms.

Circle

• the set of points in a plane that are a fixed distance from a given point

• Jedi Ship is suspended in a circular ring.

Cylinder

• the union of all line segments that connect corresponding points on congruent circles in parallel planes

• R2D2’s body is a cylinder.

Sphere

• the set of all points in space that are a fixed distance from a given point

• The Death Star is a sphere shaped space vehicle disguised as a small moon.

Cone

• the union of all line segments that connect a point and a closed curve in a different plane from the point

• General Grievous’ ship

Prism

• A solid with parallel congruent bases which are both polygons. The bases must be oriented identically. The lateral faces of a prism are all parallelograms or rectangles.

• Two of the Naboo roofs are trapezoidal prisms.

Decagon

• A polygon with 10 straight sides.

• The stain glass in the Jedi Temple has a star shaped decagon in the center.
