Block 05
2
Point
• A point is an undefined term in geometry, it names a location and has no size.
• In baseball, a point can be represented by a player on the field.
3
Line (Segment)
• A line segment is a part of a line consisting of two endpoints and all points between them.
• A line segment on a baseball field would be from 1st base to 2nd base.
4
Plane
• A plane is an undefined term in geometry, it is a flat surface that has no thickness and extends forever.
• A baseball field would represent a plane.
5
Angle
• An angle is a figure formed by two rays with a common endpoint.
• An angle on the baseball field would be created from 1st base, to 2nd base, to 3rd base. The name of this angle would be 2nd base.
6
Perpendicular Lines
• Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect at 90° angles.
• An example of perpendicular lines on the Texas Rangers symbol would be at the upper left hand corner of the T.
7
Parallel Lines
• Parallel lines are lines in the same plane that do not intersect.
• An example of parallel lines on the baseball field would be the pinstripes on a uniform.
8
Triangle
• A triangle is a three- sided polygon.
• A triangle on the Los Angeles Dodgers symbol would be the upper half of the A.
9
Right Triangle
• A right triangle is a triangle with one right angle.
• An example of a right triangle on the baseball field would be a diagram of a batters hitting positions. (1st base and 3rd base show right triangles.)
10
Pentagon
• A pentagon is a five-sided polygon.
• A pentagon on the baseball field would be home plate.
11
Hexagon
• A hexagon is a six-sided polygon.
• A hexagon on the baseball field would be a pitching screen used during batting practice.
12
Square
• A square is a quadrilateral with four congruent sides and four right angles.
• A square in baseball would be 1st base.
13
Rectangle
• A rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles.
• A rectangle in baseball would be a scoreboard.
14
Trapezoid
• A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides.
• A trapezoid in baseball can be found on a catchers mask.
15
Parallelogram
• A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.
• A parallelogram can be found at a baseball field at the railing of the stairwells.
16
Circle
• A circle is a set of points in a plane that are a fixed distance from a given point called the center of the circle.
• A circle on the baseball field is the on deck circle.
17
Cylinder
• A cylinder is a three-dimensional figure with two parallel congruent circular bases and a curved lateral surface that connects the bases.
• A cylinder on the baseball field is the cooler of Gatorade in the dugout.
18
Sphere
• A sphere is a set of points in space that are a fixed distance from a given point called the center of the sphere.
• A sphere in baseball is the baseball.
19
Five Pointed Star
• A five pointed star is a ten-sided polygon with five symmetrical projecting points.
• In baseball a star would be found on the United States flag.
20
Cube
• A cube is a solid bound by six equal sides.
• A cube in baseball is a cube baseball holder.
21
Octagon
• An octagon is an eight-sided polygon.
• On the baseball field, you can find an octagon at the batters box.
