BELLRINGER #1
1. How many continents are there?
2. How many oceans are there?
What is geography?
• Geography is the study of the Earth, including its surface and the people who live on it.– The word geography comes from the Greek word geographia, which means “description of the Earth”.
– The prefix geo- means “Earth”
• Most of the world (about 70%) is covered by water. The largest bodies of salt water are called oceans. There are 5 major oceans in the world.
Continents• The rest of the world (about 30%) is covered by
land. The seven largest landmasses are called continents.– Africa– Antarctica– Asia– Australia– Europe– North America– South America
Continents• Each continent is further divided into
separate countries, and each country has its own states and cities.
• Example:– North America (Continent)– United States (Country)– Louisiana (State)– Baton Rouge (City)
Europe
• What are some countries in Europe?– Spain– France– Germany– Italy– United Kingdom
(England, etc.)
Australia
• Australia is the smallest continent and also its own country. The only country in Australia is…Australia!
Antarctica
• There are no countries in Antarctica! Why? Because it has zero permanent human residents. 98% of Antarctica is covered in ice.
