Death and the Apothecary, or The Quack Doctor by Thomas Rowlandson, early 1800. Robert Burns wrote 'Death and Doctor Hornbook' about a doctor of the type satirised in this cartoon, who kills more patients than he cures.
How do we measure whether a source is useful? The 3 T(ea)s
ü What does or doesn’t it TELL me? CONTENT.
ü Is it TYPICAL of the time? (Look at the date…) PROVENANCE
ü Can I TRUST it? (Why was it written and who is it written by?) PROVENANCE.
To test whether we can trust it we look at the 4 A’s: Ø The author of the source . What are their beliefs?
What circumstances did they write it in? Where did they create it? (Place).
Ø The purpose or aim of the source. Is it to inform? Invoke a reaction? Show support? Is it for the public because it is what they want to hear?
Ø Audience who is it written for? The wider public, America, the world, readers of a particular newspaper?
Ø Access: Does the person writing or talking or drawing about it have access to the information?
How is it useful? (remember contextual knowledge):
How is it not useful? (remember contextual knowledge):
What is the context of time it was written? (What are people’s attitudes of Apothecary?):
