MSA’s Gas Masks: from Military Warfare to Civil Unrest to CBRN Threats
2
MSA has been making GasMasks since World War I.
[ Military Warfare ]
Over 7 million MSA Gas Masks, including the M17, M23, andM40 Series, have protected USmilitary forces throughout thepast century. MSA designed anddeveloped the MCU-2/P gasmask for the US military (USAFin Desert Storm). OurMillennium™ Gas Mask is aclone of this USAF-Navy maskthat’s now available to LawEnforcement users.
A USAF Major who served inEgypt and Somalia is adamant
about wearing an exceptionallydesigned gas mask. “An enemycan drop blood or blister agentson an airfield, so you neverknow WHEN you’re going toneed that protection. The designand shape of the lens and thismask are very important inenabling you to aim and fireyour weapon. You’re not worry-ing about comfort; you want tobe sure you can SEE.”
[ Civil Unrest ]
However, law enforcement offi-cers, especially SWAT teams, probably “know MSA” becausethey’ve worn our dependable, well designed, reasonably pricedgas masks during civil unrestand civilian hostage situations.
As one SWAT officer recentlystated, “Equipment needs to belight, dependable, and foolproof. The MSA [Advantage® 1000]mask is.”
Another agreed, “If you need touse force in hostage situations, you have to see exactly whatyou are doing while wearingyour mask. The range of visibili-ty and optics are great.”
[ CBRN Threats ]
All threats to US homelandsecurity—home-grown orimported—signify potentialdestruction of people, places, and ways of life we hold dear.New ideas for preventing orresponding to terrorist activitiesproliferate, as First Responders

contemplate the brutality ofdealing with chemical, biologi-cal, radiological, and nuclear(CBRN) agents.
This is nothing new for lawenforcement personnel, whomust always be prepared foranything. But rapidly evolvingplans to create new agencies, set new agenda, and expandsupport for state and localemergency response teams areintensifying the focus. Fieldtraining exercises also serve asdress rehearsals for personalprotection, including gas masks. This is where MSA comes in. Wehave the gas masks you need.
After decades of developmentand millions of users, MSA’s gasmasks are still greatly preferredby America’s fighting forces andFirst Responders. We are readyto help you meet today’s chal-lenges with the best gas masksavailable.
About MSAMSA has protected FirstResponders for almost 100 years!
Mine Safety AppliancesCompany was founded in 1914 bytwo mining engineers whofought underground mine fires, rescued trapped miners, anddeveloped or improved safety, rescue, and protective gear.
MSA has sold gas masks for mili-tary (and industrial) use sinceWorld War I, so we understandthe demands placed on this cru-cial protective equipment.
We have historically helped FirstResponders before, during, andafter emergencies, from smallhouse fires to multiple explo-sions at chemical plants, fromhazardous materials spills tohurricanes. We assisted those onduty after terrorists attackedNew York City, the Pentagon, andOklahoma City; and before/dur-ing the Seattle WTO meetingsand Salt Lake City Olympics.
MSA makes and marketsRespiratory Protection;Instruments; Head, Eye, Face, &Hearing Protection; Fire &
Military Helmets; Fall Protection;Thermal Imaging Cameras; andMining, Emergency, & SpecialtyEquipment via a national net-work of trained distributors, product specialists, and knowl-edgeable contacts.

FireHawk® Air Mask with CBRN Protection What do SWAT team members like about their MSA gas masks?
“My mask is light, pliable, good in cold
weather. I like how it folds for carrying and
storage.”
“MSA’s mask is the only one we can use for
sighting when using guns, and we can see
downward as well, which is great.”
“Great peripheral
vision, and you can
get your sighting
device close to
your face.”
“Until last year,
our SWAT team wore five different masks.
We needed to standardize, and some
[brands] were not good.
If my mask leaks, I am
OUT of it. . . . They HAVE
to be dependable, so we
chose the Advantage
1000.”
“We need to move fast,
without being seen. We
can’t think about if our
masks work, but they
HAVE to.”

TerminologyCBRN: Chemical, Biological,Radiological, Nuclearagents/weapons
Chemical Agents: Typically man-made chemical compounds
Biological Agents: Bacteria orviruses that are dangerous to thelife or health of biological organ-isms, i.e. human beings
Radiological Hazards: Can occurfrom nuclear devices as well as a“dirty bomb,” which dispersesradiation by means of a non-nuclear device
Nuclear Hazards: Classical nuclearhazards are associated with radia-tion received in the aftermath ofa detonation of a nuclear device
Radiological Threats/ResponseDefinitions/ThreatsRadiation is a form of energy that occurs naturally in the air we breathe, water we drink, foodwe eat and in our own bodies.Radiation doses that peoplereceive are measured in “rem” or“sievert” (1 sievert = 100 rem).

Radiation cannot be seen, smelled, felt or tasted by humans.Discarding of contaminatedclothes and washing your bodyreduces the amount of radioac-tive contamination in the bodyand thus effectively reduces yourexposure.
Radiation adverse health effectsmay not be determined for many
years depending on the amount, type, route and length of the expo-sure. The effects can range frommild to cancer and death.
Interior radiation—radiation thatgoes inside our bodiesExterior radiation—radiation that comes from sources outsideour bodies
Three basic ways to reduce yourexposure to radiation—Time: decrease the amount of time near the source of radiationDistance: increase your distancefrom the radiation sourceShielding: increase the shieldingbetween you and the radiationsource
Biological Warfare Agents**Note: List not all-inclusive.
Comments
• Not contagious. Prophylactic inoculation available.• Spores do not have a characteristic appearance (e.g., color),
smell, or taste.
• Not contagious.• Caused by a nerve toxin that is produced by the bacterium
Clostridium botulinum.• About 110 cases of botulism are reported yearly in the US.
• Contagious. Prophylactic inoculation available.• Direct and fairly prolonged face-to-face contact is required to
spread smallpox from one person to another. Also can bespread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids orcontaminated objects (bedding, clothing, etc.). Can be carriedby air in enclosed settings such as buildings, buses, and trains.
Agent Indications
Anthrax • Inhalational anthrax (most lethal form): sore throat, mild fever, muscle aches and malaise
• Cutaneous anthrax: raised bump resembling spiderbite within 1–2 days
Botulism • Symptoms begin within 6 hours to 2 weeks (mostcommonly 12 to 36 hours) after eating food that con-tains the toxins.
• Double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurredspeech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, muscle weak-ness that descends from the shoulders down throughthe upper arms, lower arms, thighs, calves, etc.
Smallpox • Fever, rash, small blisters on skin, bleeding of skin andmucous membrane, malaise, head and body aches, and sometimes vomiting. The fever is usually high, inthe range of 101 to 104 degrees F. Incubation period:10–12 days. Onset of illness: 2–4 days later
