Definition of Biomes

• What are Biomes? • “A distinct ecological

community of plants and animals living together in a particular climate is called a "biome." Scientists have divided the broad spectrum of climates and ecological communities found on Earth into biomes in different ways - some with many divisions, some with only a few.”

Types of Biomes

• Tundra

• Rain Forest

• Tiaga

• Grassland

• Desert

Characteristics of Biomes

• Location– Map

• Climate– Temperature– Growing Season– Rainfall

• Vegetation– Groundcover– Trees– Flowers

• Animals– Mammals– Birds– Insects

LocationTundra

Climate

• Tundras are the coldest of all the Biomes

• Temperatures range from -37º to 54º

• The growing season is about 50 – 60 days.

• Rainfall averages 6-10.”

Vegetation

• Groundcover consists of Lichens, mosses and grasses.

• There are low shrubs and scrub pines.

• Tundra Rose, Denali, and Rotunda are some of the 400 varieties of flowers found in the Tundra.

Animals

• Mammals: Arctic Foxes, Wolves and Polar Bears.

• Birds: Snow Birds, Loons, Ravens.

• Insects: Arctic Bumblebees, Mosquitoes and Black flies.
