July Message from Cathy Frederickson, GRW President
We must “Unite To Win” as we pave the runway for 2020! GRW will
begin the race with a fun-filled celebration for those who serve us so
well! September 7th we will enjoy an evening filled with humor, laughter and love
designed to show appreciation and give thanks to those who represent us and to
encourage those who are willing to serve. God bless these elected officials! Our
featured guest speakers are none other than “DIAMOND AND SILK”. JOIN US FOR
THIS SPECIAL EVENT.
Our SECOND opportunity in the year ahead is to bring together the Strong Women of
Texas for our Texas Federation of Republican Women convention. GRW will host this
event which is being held in Galveston at the Moody Gardens Hotel October 3-5th. We
encourage all of our members to attend. Register now and sign up to participate in one
of TFRW’s exciting lineup of leadership training opportunities! GRW members, we
will need volunteers to help with our “Welcome Party” and “Sip and Stroll” opening
event. So watch for the volunteer sign up request in next month’s email. The
convention will serve as our October meeting so please do not miss this opportunity
to work together to make this a memorable event in Galveston!
Our THIRD call to arms is to register voters in Texas. Our economy is great! The
biggest tax cuts are in and the individual mandate is gone, as a result we have the
strongest economy in the history of the country. These accomplishments all contribute
to the positive attitude of our neighbors so we are forming a “Welcome to Galveston”
committee. Please join us to welcome all new neighbors that are moving to Texas and
invite them to join us as members! In addition, we will have a get out the vote rally in
October! Our August mixer will be an opportunity to pick up a list of your new
neighbors.
YOU can be the meet and greet welcoming committee for families. Women fought for
the elimination of division by the 1951 passing of the Civil rights act! We are naturally
the welcoming party, inviting the Women of America into the voting booths, BUT not
without a tremendous effort. Our right to vote passed in Texas in June, 100 hundred
years ago and was approved by our nation August, 1920. Please show the spirit of our
parents by baking a chocolate pie or cookies, by hosting friendly block parties or teas,
or have discussion book reviews. Host covered dish suppers or a backyard barbeque
including the new family on the block!
We are the party who worked hard to assure that black slaves could vote and women
could vote, too. Republicans voted unanimously for the right for women to vote, now
THAT is Freedom. Sharia law would wipe out everything that our ancestors fought to
gain. Ronald Reagan said freedom must be earned every generation and we must do
our part to save it for our children!
Be proud of our values because it is critical that we share them and their importance
to Freedom for Americans. We still must stay strong to retain that Freedom. If we do
our homework now, we will be ready to walk with our candidates during Election year
to introduce them to our neighbors. I am starting by reading Retaking America by Nick
Adams. The byline reads “Crushing Political Correctness”. We must speak the Truth
with kindness and confidence not play games with words. We will train others with the
truth, love and M&Ms not hateful labels or shouting down those with different
opinions. We know better and it is not who we are in our relationships.
It may catch some off guard when you share your ideas with grace, clarity and
intelligence. It may come as a shock that we are not “deplorables” but people who value
integrity. Our squad of women would be those righteous women of substance that we
respect. Consider the leadership of Condoleezza Rice, Nikki Haley, Cecilia Abbott,
Candace Owens. These ladies are my stars. Let’s spread the biographies of these
leaders. Their legacy will provide great content for a special booklet that would be a
perfect gift! It should be stocking stuffers for every daughter, granddaughter, niece,
nephew, neighbor. It would be a delightful graduation gift or birthday present so they
have an opportunity to see grace in action. This is the legacy that we must leave. This
is the story that we must tell. Let’s commit to creating Unity in America through
sharing our patriotism and passion for America the Beautiful. God bless each of you
and God bless America!
Don’t miss the love, laughter and Unity Opportunity of Diamond and Silk, September
7th 2019 at the Historic Tremont Hotel! WE will be Ringing the Liberty Bell for 2020!
Bring family, friends, neighbors, associates and potential members! But Do Not Miss

LEGISLATIVE CORNER
JULY 2019
Barbara Roberts, 2nd Vice President, GRW
brobertsgalv@gmail.com (713) 516-5333
During the 140 days the Texas Legislature was in session, it passed
1,429 bills. A total of 8,743 bills were filed. Some of the noteworthy
bills that passed include raising the smoking age from 18 to 21 years,
except for military personnel; outlawing red-light cameras; major
reforms to property tax and school finance; creating a state flood
infrastructure fund (in response to Harvey); a school safety bill (in
response to the tragedy at Santa Fe); Born Alive Act; defunding
abortion providers; "Save Chick-fil-A Bill," (in response to San
Antonio City Council blocking Chick-fil-A from opening a location
in the city’s airport); and a bill prohibiting sanctuary cities. One bill
that passed with far-reaching unintended consequences pertains to the
possession of small amounts of marijuana. Until the Dept. of Public
Safety can begin testing evidence, prosecution of these misdemeanor
cases cannot proceed. Counties across the state are taking different
approaches to the issue, with some counties dismissing all pending
misdemeanors possession of marijuana cases, some counties
dismissing all such pending cases and refusing to take any new cases,
and some counties putting all pending cases on hold for now. One bill
that missed a key deadline and was not considered was the Daylight-
Saving Time bill, which aimed to eliminate daylight savings (maybe
the deadline was missed because clocks weren’t reset). For now, we
need to continue re-setting our clocks twice a year. If you want to
know more about a new or changed law, please contact me.
