ANAVYSOS KOUROS

• Made in 530BC

• 1.95 m tall

• The Base reads: "Stand and mourn Kroisos, first in line of battle and whom Ares [God of War] killed“

• Kroisos was an athenian soldier.

• It is meant to represent an ideal image of a person rather than show us what kroisos actually looked like.

• Made out of parian marble.

Basic Facts

• It’s a high archaic funerary statue of a young Athenian soldier who had fallen in battle.

• Though it is a funerary statue, it actually represents the ideal young man. A common feature for archaic statues.

• It was reconstructed, and restored, with plaster filling in missing parts on the left arm, left hand, left leg, and right heel; feet broken off beyond the heel.

What is it????

• It was discovered in Anavyssos in east Attica, Greece. The statue was cut in half and smuggled to France but was brought back to Greece.

Where was it found?

HOW WAS THIS TYPICAL OF ITS TIME

• ‘Though the Anavyssos kouros was made around 530 BC, a century after Kleobis and Biton, he stands in the same pose as they. This is hardly surprising since the method of carving remained unchanged throughout the archaic period.’

HOW WAS IT DIFFERENT THAN SCULPTURES BEFORE?

• It was described as having softer features than the previous sculptures before it. E.g. ‘ the artist has conveyed through the eyes and lips set in through a soft face.

REVIEWS

• ‘Though the Anavyssos kouros was made around 530 BC, a century after Kleobis and Biton, he stands in the same pose as they. This is hardly surprising since the method of carving remained unchanged throughout the archaic period. Nevertheless , important naturalistic innovations had been produced.’ Susan Woodford.
