Jacques Cartier began his first voyage in the year 1534, when he was 43 years old.

He began his second voyage in the year 1535 and returned the year after in 1536.

Father south from the Strait of Belle Isle opened a larger body of water.

King Frances 1 told Jacques Cartier to go to North America for gold and other precious metals.

Jacques started the expedition on April 20, 1534. He sailed from St. Malo. He left with two ships.

On June 9, 1534, Cartier discovered a strait of water. He called it the Strait of Belle Isle.

Extremely favorable weather allowed the vessels to cross the ocean in good time. His ships reached Cape Bonavista.

Though Cartier failed to discover either a route to China or gold and other riches, his voyage to the gulf of St. Lawrence was interesting enough to interest King Francis in a follow-up expedition.

He was a sailor for Spain, looking for gold, riches and a route to China.

He claimed Canada for Spain, in the year 1534, during his first expedition.

Jacques married a girl named Catherine Des Granches in 1520, before any of his expeditions.

The ships that followed him in his journey were known as La Grande Hermin, L’Emerinion St. Brieux and St. George.
