THE EARLY FUR-TRADE

Phase 1 The first nations such as Mik’maq began to trade with

Europeans coming to fish cod off the east coast. The British set up nations to try and catch fish.

France dominated the fur trade during this phase. Quebec and Montreal were the shipping central area. Smaller boats transported goods and some furs. This is when they started getting more into the fur

trade.

Britain established the Hudson Bay company. The Hudson Bay still exist today the it is called The

Bay . First Nations centrally located between the British and

the French trading networks. Eventually Files De Roi came and they made families

with the voyageurs.

New France became a British colony in 1763. The French system had focused on resources specially

furs but the British system was land hungry. After New France became a British colony, British

merchants took control of the fur trade network out of Montréal.

The furious competition between the Hudson’s Bay Company and the North West Company led to shootings, fights and hostage takings.

Hudson Bay took over the North West factory and begin a monopoly.

The Hudson Bay Company is the oldest company in North America.

The company fought with the Northwest Company The Hudson Bay is Rupert’s Land. They took over the North West Company.

The construction of the fort was initiated on April 10, 1875 by a federal order to force out whiskey traders from the area.

It was Built for a Trading Post. Across from the BOW. The Métis Are people Who had kids With a Voyageur

and a female native. The came to Calgary for farming.
