“A school building isn’t just a collection of bricks
and mortar; it’s a dynamic learning environment...”
What exactly “Functional design” means ???
In this few minutes…..
1) Requirements of higher secondary school
2) Factors to be considered for functionality and their
brief description.
Class rooms Science labs Computer labs Library Auditorium Canteen Office Staff rooms Toilets Play ground
Acoustics
Indoor air quality and ventilation
Heating and insulation
Lighting
Safety
Interior design
Aesthetics
Easy accessibility from residential areas
The site should preferably be at a quiet place
LAND SCAPE ELEMENTS :
Open areas – to increase comfort
Plants near to windows
A row of tall shady trees- Avoid glare in the
rooms
Problem :
Excessive noise and reverberation interfere
with speech intelligibility.
Solution:
Echoes can be controlled using absorption
and/or diffusion. Choosing a material that
absorbs sound and place it appropriately.
Locate rooftop mechanical equipment units
away from critical listening spaces such as
classrooms.
Avoid using unit ventilators, fan coil units and
ductless split systems in classrooms.
Acoustic treatment to the ceiling to reduce
reverberation times
Removal of vitiated air
Provide fresh air based on different spaces
Choice of natural or mechanical ventilation depends
on space to be ventilated.
SPACE AIR CHANGES PER HOUR
AUDITORIUM 3-6
CLASS ROOMS 3-6
LABORATORIES 3-6
TOILETS 6-12
STAFF ROOMS 3-6
Two types: Natural lighting , Artificial lighting
Preferably natural lighting in class rooms, science labs
Illumination levels
Double-glazing at all windows
Solar orientation
Occupancy sensors for lighting systems
VISUAL TASK ILLUMINATION LEVEL
class room
desks ,boards 150-300 lux
laboratories 200-300 lux
libraries 150-300 lux
Recreation purpose
Play ground with a minimum area of 15000 sq-m.
Good drainage facility
Fire safety is one of the important thing to be
considered during the design of school
building.
Evacuation time of the building should be too
less. This decides the functionality.
Size and layout depending on number of
students in class or books in library
LIBRARY:
• Quiet study space
• Individual reading spaces
Colors used also effects
Arrangement of furniture
