Enlightening News from the Discover A Star Foundation

Volume 6 Number 1Summer 2010

There is no greater need right nowthan to make a positive difference inour community. Los Angeles leads thenation with 43,000 people with noplace to call home on any given night, and forty percent of these homelessare women and children.

Universal Studios Hollywood is makingthat positive difference, and that is whyI am so proud of the work that Universal StudiosHollywood's Discover A Star Foundation continues to do andthe significant impact we are making to support children'scauses and homeless intervention. For example, this yearDiscover A Star hosted over 1,000 underprivileged guests atthe 19th Annual Christmas in Spring event and provided agrant to the My Stuff Bags Foundation for 2,500 duffel bags tobe given to children who enter foster care.

Of course, our tremendous progress would not be possiblewithout the generosity of our supporters giving to theDiscover A Star Foundation. In the upcoming months, we willbe focused on the Universal Studios Charity Golf Classic - thecornerstone of Discover A Star's fundraising efforts. To date,we have raised an astounding $5 million which in turnprovides grants to deserving organizations who are dedicatedto providing programs, playgrounds, medical resources and thelike in support of our Foundation's initiatives.

We look forward to raising the critical funds needed tobrighten the lives of others in our community. On behalf ofUniversal Studios Hollywood, I thank you for your continuedsupport of Discover A Star.

Christmas arrived early this year for hundreds of under-privileged families at the19th Annual Christmas in Spring event which was held in April. For 19 years,Universal Studios Hollywood (USH) and the Discover A Star Foundation havereached out to the local community during a time of year when the needs ofhomeless families are often overlooked. This year, the event made an even biggerdifference since the need at local charitable organizations has increasedsubstantially over the past year.

The event welcomed over 1,000 clients from M.E.N.D. (Meet Each Need withDignity) and residents of twelve other transitional living family shelters. Guestsenjoyed a delicious holiday meal catered by our very own culinary team, a visitfrom Santa, a large duffel bag filled with children’s toys, clothing, school supplies, stuffed animals, a cuddly, handmade blanket provided by the My Stuff BagFoundation, a new book and fun carnival games where everyone was a winner! Also, in true USH fashion, guests enjoyed plenty of entertainment from ourvery own characters including Scooby Doo and Shaggy, Spongebob, CuriousGeorge, Dora the Explorer and Beetlejuice.

The event would not have been possible without the dedication andenthusiasm of over 150 Universal Studios Hollywood employee volunteers(pictured below) and the committee members who helped plan the event.Together, they provided the guests with a memorable day and the knowledgethat there are people in the community who care.

Discover A Star (DAS) partnered with BHF to create a Bright Spacefor a homeless shelter in Sylmar called Hope Gardens – a UnionRescue Mission shelter. The facility is a place for children to play, learnand have fun by utilizing language and music centers, educationalgames and books, arts and crafts, computers and comfortable spacesfor families. The Bright Space was designed in collaboration withUniversal Studios Hollywood’s Technical Services Department, USHemployees and Universal Studio’s own Child Care Center.

With cozy nooks, livelycolors and comfortablefurniture, DAS and BHFcreated a space that isengaging for HopeGarden’s children andfamilies to play – a placeto experience the joy ofsimply being a child orparent.
