TEACHING AND RESEARCH AT PAN-
ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY
Currently Pan-Atlantic University has three main units:
A graduate business school: Lagos Business School (LBS). It
started in 1991.
A unit which offers services and non-degree programmes
to small businesses: The Enterprise Development Centre
(EDC). It started in 2003.
A graduate school of media: The School of Media and
Communication (SMC). It started in 2008
The objective of education in our university is the well-
rounded formation of the human person. This is why every
programme includes several courses in the humanities. We
also seek, by deliberate design of the programmes, to
inculcate and groom the entrepreneurial spirit in our students
and participants. The university aims at nurturing individuals
who are professionally competent, creative and enterprising,
zealous for the common good and able to make free and
morally upright decisions and who thus act as positive agents
of change in service to society.
The founders of Pan-Atlantic University were inspired in
beginning this educational project by the teachings of the
founder of Opus Dei, an institution of the Catholic Church.
Furthermore, the Prelature of Opus Dei provides the spiritual
and pastoral means necessary in order that the University may
maintain and develop its Christian identity. The Prelature of
Opus Dei helps to ensure that all teaching, publishing and

ABOUT PAN-ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY
Currently Pan-Atlantic University has three main teaching and research units: the Lagos Business School (LBS) which is a graduate business school, the
Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) which offers services and non-degree programmes to small businesses and the School of Media and
Communication (SMC).
research activities in PAU are inspired by the Christian view of
the person, the world and society.
LAGOS BUSINESS SCHOOL (LBS)
The Lagos Business School aims at providing experienced
professional managers with high quality general management
education relevant to the Nigerian business environment.
LBS offers a PhD in Management, full-time and executive MBA
programmes and a wide spectrum of open-enrolment
seminars on essential issues in business for business leaders
and managers. Customised in-company seminars are also
arranged for companies who need to train large groups of staff
in a particular area. Delivered in purpose-built learning
facilities, LBS programmes attract over 3,000 participants from
multinational and indigenous companies yearly. Executive
education at LBS is comprehensive, drawing from the
experience of faculty and participants. The system of teaching
privileges the case-study method and group-work approaches
to learning.
The School places a premium on maintaining a very keen
relationship with the corporate clientele it serves. Constant
interaction with participating organisations, a committed
corporate support group of 70 companies, plus counsel and
support rendered by the School's distinguished Advisory
Board play major roles in securing this linkage
SCHOOL OF MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION (SMC)
The School of Media and Communication was instituted by
Pan-Atlantic University in recognition of the critical role of the
media and entertainment industries in shaping societal values
and cultural life. No less important, the contribution of the
creative industries to economic growth and the GDP is gaining
recognition as well.
Specifically, the establishment of the SMC is informed by the
aspiration to train professionals in this area of culture who will
uphold the highest intellectual, ethical and professional values
that promote creativity, critical knowledge, technical
perfection, social responsibility, and the spirit of enterprise.
The School's programmes prepare students for careers in the
creative industries, in business generally, and in various public
and private domains. The School offers M.Sc. and P.G.D.
programmes as well as non-degree programmes for
professionals.
ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (EDC)
The Enterprise Development Centre of Pan-Atlantic University
has the mission of providing holistic business development
and support services to small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
in Nigeria.
EDC provides capacity building programmes and a variety of
wrap-around services such as advisory services, mentoring,
experts-in-residence, network meetings, access to market &
information, implementation of organisational plans and
more.

from the Vice-Chancellor
In writing my brief introduction to the 2012/13 Pan-Atlantic
University Annual Report the first theme that comes to my
mind is the progress we have made during this academic
session towards our targets of building a new campus for
the University, raising the necessary funds and starting
undergraduate programmes on that campus in October
2014. I am happy to report that we are on course to
accomplish these goals. You will find more information on
this in the report.
It has been my practice to use the introductions to the
annual reports of the University to highlight some aspects of
our work. In this year’s report I wish to draw your attention
to two areas of research in Pan-Atlantic University that are
both innovative and likely to have a high impact.
CIPRA is a centre of the Lagos Business School which
focuses on research in infrastructure development in Africa.
The Centre is led by Mr. Ernest Ndukwe. As part of its
research output, CIPRA publishes the State of Infrastructure
Reports Series. Each of these reports focuses on a specific
class of infrastructure assets such as roads,
telecommunications, water or sanitation. The two most
recent reports by CIPRA study Roads and Power. The reports
highlight the structural, administrative, policy, and fiscal
challenges hampering these critical infrastructure assets, in
addition to profiling their current physical state of health.
The reports also provide vital statistical data on the stock,
quality, location and regional distribution of these assets.
Building on a large basis of empirical evidence gathered
through actual fieldwork and geo-spatial surveys, the
reports also advocate feasible development options in order
to address the critical operational and institutional
challenges observed in these sectors.
Another interesting research project, in a very different field,
is The Media75 Project .The leader of this project is Mr.
Richard Ikiebe, a faculty member in our School of Media and
Communication.
Many media leaders who were active in the years before and
immediately after the nation’s independence have either
died or are in their twilight years. Those of them who played
pivotal roles have yet to document their experiences for
posterity and scholarship. As a result, the story of the media
in the formation of the Nigerian nation state has not been
sufficiently documented.
This project revolves around interviewing some of Nigeria’s
most remarkable living media leaders. Some of those that
have been interviewed already are: Dr. Patrick D. Cole, Dr.
Christopher Kolade, Mr. Sam Amuka, Mal. Mohammed
Haruna, Mr. Ray Ekpu, and Dr. Doyin Abiola, The edited
transcripts of these interviews already fill four large volumes.
The research is not limited to the older generation; younger
media leaders as well as media scholars of note have been
included. So far, more than 50 veterans have been
interviewed and there are at least 20 media leaders yet to be
interviewed. It is hoped that the product of this effort will
greatly aid media research and scholarship. By next year the
faculty members involved in this project will start publishing
papers and books that will aid further media scholarship,
improve students’ appreciation of media history and
stimulate appropriate forms of media leadership.

UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT
Change of NameOn the 24th of May, the University announced a change of its
name from Pan-African University to Pan-Atlantic University.
This was done to avoid it being confused by a recently created
Africa Union-owned educational institution called Pan-African
University. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Juan Elegido announced
this at a press conference in the Victoria Island Campus of the
University on the 24th of May, 2013.
Undergraduate Programmes:The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved
the commencement of undergraduate programmes in Pan-
Atlantic University. The following programmes will commence
in the 2014/15 academic session.

Endowment Fund
In line with the practice of the best universities all over the
world, Pan-Atlantic University has created an endowment
fund. The fund is independently controlled by trustees. The
returns of the endowment will be used to fund scholarships
and research activities, while preserving the value of the
principal.
The endowment was created by putting together the class
gifts contributed during the last years by the graduands of
the different programmes of the University. Currently the
value of the endowment is N312m and it is the intention of
the University to try to grow this value over time in order to
ensure that PAU will be able to sustain a vigorous research
and grant scholarships to many deserving students.

Financial Times RankingThe Financial Times ranking for 2013 has for the seventh
consecutive time placed Lagos Business School (LBS) with the
world's top business schools for open enrolment executive
education. Ranked 55th in the world (the second highest rank
from Africa), LBS is the only institution in West and Central
Africa included in the prestigious international ranking,
illustrating a commitment to providing management
education of world-class standard.
LBS Library
During the course of the session, the permanent library of
the Lagos Business School was completed. The Library
services at LBS have therefore moved to this 3-floor
structure adjacent to the MBA block.
Not By Chance: Memories of the Lagos Business
School
First Director General of Lagos Business School, Emeritus
Prof Albert Alos has released a new book about LBS. Titled,
“Not By Chance: Memories of the Lagos Business School”,
the book captures the fascinating history of LBS from its
humble beginnings to a world-class business school.
In 22 easy-to-read chapters, the book describes how LBS
progressed since it was founded in 1991.
Reseach Centres
Centre for Competitiveness and Strategy (CCS)
In 2012, a new research centre, the Centre for
Competitiveness and Strategy (CCS), was established in LBS.
It will function as a knowledge partner of the Lagos State
Government in the area of competitiveness to help provide
insight that will drive policy actions towards this goal. The
Centre, which is headed by LBS faculty Dr. Tunji Adegbesan,
also aims to become Africa's foremost knowledge hub for
information on competitiveness and strategy.
CIPRA Reports
The Centre for Infrastructure, Policy, Regulation and
Advancement (CIPRA), a centre of LBS, works with public
sector agencies, private organisations and partner
institutions to identify and address high-priority needs for
learning on Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) and
infrastructure development.
As part of its research outputs, CIPRA publishes the State of
Infrastructure Reports Series to spotlight specific
infrastructure assets such as power, roads,
telecommunications, ports, water and sanitation, aviation,
irrigation, social infrastructure, etc. The two current reports
by CIPRA on Roads and Power, highlight structural,
administrative, policy, and fiscal challenges hampering these
critical infrastructure assets, in addition to profiling their
current physical state of health, the reports also provide vital

statistical data on the stock, quality, location and actual,
regional distribution of these assets across the nation.
Building on the huge empirical evidence gathered through
actual fieldwork and geo-spatial surveys, the Reports also
advocate feasible development options to addressing critical
operational and institutional challenges observed in these
sectors. They will serve as handy, decision-support,
reference manuals to guide investment strategy and policy
directions in both private and public sectors.

Business School during the 2011/12 initiated the following
agreements with educational and industrial partners:
1. Lagos Business School has signed a memorandum of
understanding with the Lagos State Government (LASG)

Africa. The MOU was signed on Monday, 18 January
2013 by Dean of LBS, Dr Enase Okonedo and the
Governor of Lagos State Babatunde Raji Fashola at the
governor's office. The agreement was entered into as
result of both parties recognising the need to drive the
competitiveness of Lagos. According to Dr Okonedo,
there has been an awakened interest in Africa for big
businesses, so it becomes imperative to make Lagos
attractive for investment and safe for the people who
live in it. In his remarks, Governor Fashola said his
government was willing to open up to LBS for research
in order to develop policies that were useful to the
people.

with a requirement to make N5,000 weekly profits for 12
weeks.
The impact investing project was introduced as part of an

an associated social impact.

The Media75 Project - 75 Years (1935-2010) of
Media Leadership in Nigeria
The story of the media in the formation of the Nigerian
nation state has not been sufficiently documented by media
scholars and practitioners alike. The Media75Years project is
a primary research into the role of journalism and media
leadership in shaping the history of the modern Nigerian
nation-state against the backdrop of professionalism,
politics (including intra- and inter-media politics), ethnicity,
management and the business of media. It is hoped that
the product of this effort will greatly aid media research and
scholarship.
This project will cover the project from 1935 till 2010. The
research revolves around interviewing some of Nigeria's
most remarkable living media leaders. Some of those that
we have already interviewed are: Pa Laban Namme, Prince
Henry Odukomaiya, Dr. Patrick D. Cole, Dr. Christopher
Kolade, Mr. Sam Amuka-Pemu, Chief Ajibola Ogunsola, Mal.
Mohammed Haruna, Mr. Felix Adenaike, Engr. Vincent
Maduka, Mrs. Agbeke Ogunsanwo, Mr. Dan Agbese, Dr.
Victoria Ezeokoli, Mr. Lade Bonuola, Mr. Ray Ekpu, Dr. Doyin
Abiola, Hajia Bilikisu Yussuf, Femi Kusa, Mr. Emeka Izeze,
Prince Nduka Obaigbena, and Chief Taiwo Allimi.
The research is not limited to the older generation; younger
media leaders as well as media scholars of note have been
included. There is also a section dedicated to dead media
leaders. So far, more than 50 veterans have been
interviewed, and at least another 20 media leaders are yet
to be interviewed.
