“Today’s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel where to
present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the promised
land. Is my offering at today’s Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings
the Lord has given me?

WHOM WILL WE WORSHIP?

“You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the
netherworld shall not prevail against it.”
Matthew 16:18
Tefillin are small, leather boxes worn by Orthodox Jewish men on their
foreheads and arms during ordinary weekday-morning prayer (not on the
Sabbath or holidays). (In some Christian sources, tefillin are referred to as
phylacteries, but the word tefillin is actually proper.) the boxes contain verses
from the Torah (the books of Moses). Selected verses are written out from
Exodus and Deuteronomy to remind those praying of what God has done and
what God has offered.
On this day in the Church calendar, we have now completed the Easter
season and are back to “ordinary” time. We can learn a great deal from our
elder brothers and sisters in faith about how to live in the ordinary world. How
best should we remember what God has done so that, In season or Out,
especially during ordinary times, we won’t forget? How do we keep the words
of God in front of our eyes?
We have just experienced the serious, sobering reflections of Lent
followed by the surprise and delight of the resurrection at Easter. The Sundays
of Pentecost, Trinity, and Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ have unfolded
before us like the glimpse the transfiguration gave to the disciples of Jesus—a
look at where we are headed. It might be tempting to ask to camp at the top
of the mount where we have found extraordinary revelations. But from the
liturgical heights of our biggest season, we climb back down to our usual,
ordinary patterns.
If we drive down billboarded highways or watch an hour or two of
television, dozens of advertisements ask for a place among our priorities. In
the regular world we live in, we have some basic, important choices to make.
The temptations are sometimes large. Sometimes they are subtle.
Whom will we worship? Which gods will we choose?

Is it wrong to wear the rosary as
a necklace?
Dear Padre,
Is it sacrilegious to wear rosary beads around your neck, in hope of getting a favor
from God? I though rosary beads were for praying the rosary..
William R.
Dear William,
Rosary beads are intended for praying the rosary, and not a good luck charm.
There are many, however who do use rosary beads, medals, and pictures for
good luck. Some of these people even have devotions to bring them luck. There
is no luck. There is God and God’s provident care.
Some have a tendency to try to sign a contract with God. They agree to do
good things if God will give them a special favor in return. We do good things
because they are the right things to do, not because they will bring us good luck.
We pray in devotion to the saints, asking them to intercede for us. We do so
knowing that God will give us what we need. Everyone has things they desire or
wishes they want fulfilled. God knows if these things will help us. If we need
these things, God will provide them. God has never promised to provide all we
desire.
We should use the rosary beads for prying, and medals and pictures for devo-
tion. To use the for good luck is superstition. God is not someone to be con-
trolled by ceremonies and rituals. God is one whom we worship in spirit and
truth.
The Padre
