from Pastor Liz Leavitt . . .
Dear CCU Ohana,
By the time you read this, I will be on my way to a church retreat on the
mainland, where I've been invited to serve as keynote speaker discussing
issues of food justice and how they connect to practices of faith and
spirituality. As I've been preparing for my time there, it's occurred to me that
the questions elicited by such inquiries--questions such as what shall we
eat? and how shall we grow what we eat? and what is our responsibility to
those who help grow what we eat?--are, at their core, very spiritual
questions, getting at the root of what we believe to be important, what we
value and what we believe God calls us to be and do.
You are likely aware that we've just completed three weeks of discussions
about the transformation of our sanctuary space: they've been challenging
conversations in which we've grappled with important decisions about how
we will steward our physical plant so that God might be most glorified. The
questions we've asked in those discussions--about lights and chairs and
flooring material--have also represented deeper inquiries about what we
value, how we worship and what we believe God is calling us to make
space for. I am grateful for the ways we've been able to meet each other in
these conversations and the ways we've approached these discussions
with cautious hope and careful stewardship. It's true we're not finished yet:
there is more work to do. But as we move ahead, I am hopeful that through
this process even more insight may surface about what God is calling CCU
2016 September Ka Elele Aloha Page 1 of 13
to be and do in this season of its ministry. And I trust that we will be brave to
answer that calling with generosity and joy.
I look forward to our continued journey together into this fall season in which
change may be afoot, but the presence of God will be steadfast as we
continue to find nourishment in God's table and in our shared fellowship.
In peace,
Liz

Gratitude Corner!
Starting a new tradition for our
CCU newsletter, here is a new
space where we can offer thanks to
those who have gone above and
beyond in service to others and to
our ministry this month. (If you
have a submission, email our office!)
This month, we give our greatest:
THANKS go to Paul Haring who will
be retiring after his many years of
service on the lawn care team! We
are thankful for Paul's dedicated
service to keeping our grounds neat
and tidy. (And of course we welcome
any who might put in their name to
join the effort in his stead.)
THANKS are also due to those who
attended our discussions about the
sanctuary project and to Annie
Walenta who put extensive thought
and effort into making the first round
of proposals.
THANKS to John Heidel for
arranging to have our new bike rack
installed.
THANKS to those who have kept up
their pledges in these summer
months of travel and other activities.
(And it's never too late to catch
up...wink, wink!)
Calling all lovers of peace!!
We'll be focusing on the theme of
peace during our worship time in
October and we'd love to have brief
(2-3 minute) testimonies each
week from various church
participants about what the work
of peacemaking means to
them/has meant in their lives. Are
you willing to share? You will receive
ample guidance and coaching from
our pastor as you prepare. This can
be a great new opportunity for
growth and service. Please see Liz if
you might be interested.

Building Updates
The screen door for the kitchen
has been modified & repaired
this month; just in time for
Family Promise and sturdy
enough to withstand pushes on
it by small hands. Thank you to
Rollo & Keith!!!
Seagull Schools continues its
renovation of its upstairs office
space, a project which will be
completed before Family
Promise arrives in a few weeks
to reclaim B3.
At a congregational meeting on
Sunday, August 28, the
congregation issued several
responses regarding the
sanctuary redevelopment
proposal: a vote to explore
further options for a flooring
material with greater durability,
a vote to approve the purchase
and installation of the
suggested lighting fixtures, a
request that further choices for
seating be presented, and
consensus that more time is
needed to identify and discuss
issues related to the removal of
the baptistery.

We celebrate that a bike rack is
being installed near the center
tree in our parking lot. This will
not only serve as a witness to
our green ministry, but it will
also increase safety on our
campus by providing a place
for bikes to be locked-up
securely without blocking other
walkways. Please be mindful of
this new addition as you pull
into the parking lot so you don't
miss it...or run into it!
We're looking for interested parties
to join the Vespers on the Lanai
planning and landscaping teams.
See Pastor Liz if you are interested!
Thirsty to know more about the
bible?
Our newly formed community bible
study group will not be meeting
during the month of September.
Keep a look out in the weekly email
and bulletin for the October topic.

We will also need help with pre-host-week
cleaning/set up on Saturday, 9/17 starting at

done in less than 2 hours. All assistance is
greatly appreciated!
