• Military advisors arrived beginning in 1950. U.S. involvement escalated in the early 1960s, with U.S. troop levels tripling in 1961 and tripling again in 1962.

• U.S. combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Involvement peaked in 1968.

TET OFFENSIVEThe Tet Offensive was a military campaign during the Vietnam War that was launched on January 30, 1968 by forces of the People’s Army of Vietnam against the forces of the Republic of Vietnam (South), the United States and their allies.

TET OFFENSIVEThe purpose of the offensive was to utilize the element of surprise and strike military and civilian command and control centers throughout South Vietnam, during a period when no attacks were supposed to take place.

TET OFFENSIVETet is a lunar New Year holiday in Vietnam with festivities occurring over a two-day period. Both sides of the conflict had agreed to a 2 day cease fire – when no attacks were to take place. The People’s Army broke the agreement with a surprise attack.

• Although the offensive was a military defeat for the Communists, it had a profound effect on the US government and shocked the US public, which had been led to believe by its political and military leaders that the communists were, due to previous defeats, incapable of launching such a massive effort.

• The war exacted a huge human cost in terms of fatalities, including 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers.

• The Case Church Amendment, passed by the U.S. Congress in response to the anti-war movement, prohibited direct U.S. military involvement without congressional authorization after August 15, 1973.

The women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s drew inspiration from the civil rights movement.Women of the United States joined together to protest the injustices that were, and in some instances, still are ingrained into the American Society.

THE WOMEN’S MOVEMENT

While The Movement actually began in the late 1960's, membership and unity seemed to have increased drastically in the early 1970's.

This movement was actually known as the SECOND WAVE. The FIRST WAVE occurred and concentrated on voting rights and property rights.

THE WOMEN’S MOVEMENTSecond Wave Feminism radically changed the face of western culture, leading to marital rape laws, establishment of rape crisis and battered women's shelters, significant changes in custody and divorce law, and widespread integration of women into sports activities and the workplace..

THE WOMEN’S MOVEMENTThe Movement created enormous pride and was a life altering event for many of the women who chose to fight for their beliefs. As Helen Reddy (a feminist musician) said, the Movement "was something that profoundly altered how I felt about myself and about life. From that time on I was changed"

CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENTNearly 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans in Southern states still inhabited a starkly unequal world of disenfranchisement, segregation and various forms of oppression, including race-inspired violence.

CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT“Jim Crow” laws at the local and state levels barred them from classrooms and bathrooms, from theaters and train cars, from juries and legislatures.

CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENTIn 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the “separate but equal” doctrine that formed the basis for state-sanctioned discrimination, drawing national and international attention to African Americans’ plight.

CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENTIn the turbulent decade and a half that followed, civil rights activists used nonviolent protest and civil disobedience to bring about change, and the federal government made legislative headway with initiatives such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968.

rose to prominence during the Civil Rights era, including Martin Luther

King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Andrew Goodman and others. They risked—and sometimes lost—their lives in the name of freedom and

equality.
