Mrs Snow says, “Our first week in Reception has been fantastic! The children have all
settled beautifully and are beginning to understand our rules, routines and expecta-
tions. Every child has a blue planner that has our timetable attached so that you can
see for example when we visit the library, ICT suite or have PE. On a Thursday after-
noon, we have a themed Show and Tell activity. Next week, we would like the children
to bring in something about their family (this could be a photo, object or drawing). Well
done to all the children for a great start to school. Our Reception children will not be
attending star assemblies for a little while until we are all happy and confident to do
so. We will make sure parents know when we will make our first appearance.”
Miss Richman reports, “It has been a fantastic start to Year 5 this year. Well done every-
one! We have started place value in maths and are now able to solve problems using
a variety of numbers. In English, we have started writing non-chronological reports and
have understood the wide range of features that need to be used. Our topic, is ID and
the children have started to understand the importance of identification and the
ways in which it is used. In art, we are making photo collages and self portraits. I
hope to see continued effort next week. Keep up the good work Year 5!”
Friday 14th September 2018
Here we are at the end of our first full week and what a busy week it has been!
Everyone has enjoyed their ‘Hook Days,’ Year 6 have completed their 11+ tests,
working admirably hard, and Reception have embarked upon their full time school
journey! Well done and thank you to everyone who has ensured their children
conform with our uniform policy—it’s great to see the children looking smart and part
of the school community. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me or the
teachers if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning or well-
being at school.
PLEASE come and support
our coffee morning in aid
of Macmillan cancer
support on Friday 28th
September. We really
would like to raise as much
money as possible for this
organisation who do such
great work to support
those with cancer and their
families. We will also ask
for donations of cake from
Thursday 27th onwards.
The first Parent Forum of
the year will take place
straight afterwards where
the new behaviour policy
will be discussed and a
general Q&A session will
generate ideas for other
areas of school life we can
work together to
improve this year.
Please see
opposite our new
‘Golden Rules’
which the JLT
have chosen from
ideas contributed
by each class. This
is one aspect of
the new policy.
Miss Davies says, “This week, Year 1
have been reading the story of the
Gingerbread man, thinking of some
super describing words and
sequencing the events of the story. In
maths, they have been exploring
numbers to 10 using pom poms,
water beads, number lines and
Numicon. Our 'Bounce' hook day
took place on Wednesday where the
children created some beautiful
marble paintings, took part in science
investigations to test which items
bounced and played games with the
gigantic 'Wubble'. Well done Year 1, a
super start to the year!”
Miss Atkins reports, “This week in English
Year 2 have been learning about using capital
letters, full stops, past tense and time
connectives in order to write a recount next
week. Year 2 had their hook day, on Wednesday
for their first topic Bounce. We played bench
ball and dodgeball and created art pieces using
different objects shaped like a circle. Then we
painted them using different colours. In maths,
we have been using counters to partition 2 digit
and 3 digit number and learning how numbers
can be partitioned in different ways. In ICT, the
children learnt about pixel pointillism and
created their own computer artwork. Well done
for a fantastic week Year 2!!
A few beginning of the year reminders….
Please ensure all uniform has the
correct name in, securely fastened
and clearly written!
Sadly, we have already noticed a few
cases of head lice appearing. Please
check daily and treat promptly!
Unfortunately, children are not able
to have Lipsyl or handcream in
school.
To ensure everyone’s safety, please
ensure you use the path to enter
the school rather than the car park
as vehicles are occasionally
permitted and it is a good habit for
the children to get into.
KS2 are only permitted to have fruit
or vegetable for snack at playtime
(sorry but no bars or winders etc as
it creates extra litter and becomes
too hard for us to monitor.)
Mrs Fincher says, “We'd like to welcome all of our new families to the nursery.
The children have settled well and we have been talking about our family and
making family trees.”
One of our parents has started a petition
to try and persuade the council to take
action regarding the dangers of crossing
the road at the sharp bend and junction
by the Co-op. This could result in a school
crossing patrol and/or parking restrictions
on the bend. Please sign the petition
which is in the school office if you feel
able to lend your support to this
campaign.
Mr Foster says, “If adjusting to a new
teacher and a classroom wasn't enough to
be getting on with, Year 6 have already had
their 11+ tests! These tests really were
incredibly difficult; the children worked
extremely hard and handled the pressure
admirably, and we are all very proud of
them. That said, Year 6 isn't all tests
(believe it or not!) and we have begun our
topic ID which looks at some of the
different scientific ways in which we are
unique, and some of the factors that
influence our personalities. As part of this,
we've been reading a classic story, Bill's
New Frock, in which a boy suddenly wakes
up as a girl. The ways he's treated
differently have opened up some
interesting and passionate discussions!
Mrs Hopkin and Miss Anderson say, “Year 3
have started the new school year brilliantly!
Our hook day was full of lots of exciting ac-
tivities including making a clay model of our
teeth, burping(!), brushing our teeth and an
eggs-periment! Imagining that boiled eggs were
our teeth, the shell being the enamel, we
placed 6 eggs in different liquids; vinegar, coke,
lemonade, orange juice, milk and water. The
next day we observed the changes to the shell.
It was fascinating to see the effects the liquids
had! In English we have started looking at
instructions and what can go wrong if we don’t
use the correct features. In maths, we have
focused on counting in hundreds using practical
resources. A super start year 3, keep it up!
Miss Rodwell reports, “In Year 4 we started
the week with ‘Hook Day’ for Burps, Bottoms
and Bile. Everybody loved making models with
clay to show all the different teeth we have in
our mouths. We also started an
‘eggs'periment to see what happens when we
leave 6 eggs in different liquids such as coke,
lemonade, orange juice and vinegar! We will
keep monitoring the egg’s progress
throughout our topic. In maths, we have been
learning about Roman numerals and some of
us can identify numbers up to 1000 now! In
English we are looking at instructions and
reminding ourselves of the features. Super
first week Year 4! Keep it up!
