• Not all members of Puritan communities conformed entirely to the Puritan way, but all were terrified of the consequences that awaited if identity was discovered; Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” depicted the Puritan hysteria that follows being different in a Puritan town
ACTS : INTRO PARAGRAPHA : Attention Getter = quote, fact, or any other way to grab the reader’s attention – it must be related to the topic, but not specific to the thesis. Sophomore English will not be asking questions or giving definitions as the Attention Getter.
C : Connector Statement = Expand on the attention getter – explain quote, explain fact, give background, and star connecting the information from the attention getter with the information in the thesis.
T : Thesis = the main purpose of your essay – present your thoughts on the subject. Must contain a subject + a position. A thesis statement should never contain the following: in my opinion, I think, I believe… The entire thesis represent one main idea and is a declarative sentence with no qualifiers (might, maybe, perhaps, etc)
S : Summary = These are the main ideas of your body paragraphs. It is a preview of what is to come in your essay. It should include your thesis + a list of your main ideas. Sophomore English will not be listing the three body paragraphs in the summary.
M-EL-EL-CONM : Main Idea = It should be a thesis/topic sentence for this particular paragraph. The focus of this paragraph should reflect the thesis, expand on the thesis.
E : Evidence = Provide one example (from The Crucible) that supports the main idea of this paragraph
L : Link = Further explain and elaborate on your evidence. Explain HOW the specific quote proves the main idea.
E : Evidence = Provide one example (from Sinners) that supports the main idea of this paragraph, BUT should really further support your first piece of evidence.
L : Link = Further explain and elaborate on your evidence. Explain HOW the specific quote proves the main idea AND supports your Crucible evidence.
Con : Conclusion = Transition + Concluding sentence – restate the main idea in a different way and include a summary of the evidence. Try to think of a clean transition into the next topic sentence.
STAC
S : Summary = Transition + Restate your THESIS and main idea without repeating yourself. Sophomore English will not use “In conclusion” in ANY essay.
T : Thesis = Restate the main purpose of your essay from the essay prompt.
A : Attention Getter = Tie this sentence back to your original attention getter, but add some new detail because your readers have been enlightened by all of your facts and writing!
C : Clincher Sentence = a final statement that provides the reader with a memorable thought on the topic.
