Francisco Goya (1746-1828), Spanish, “Self-portrait” Oil on canvas

His works ranged from decorative tapestries, through realistic and satiric paintings

of the period when he was court painter to the Spanish King Charles IV,

and the portrayal of the horrors of the French invasion—culminating in the

nightmarish paintings created at the end of his life.
