Worthy Brother Knights:
It is Sunday December 8, mid afternoon. I
just got home from feeding the Confirmation
class lunch. The night before, we put on one
heck of a spread at our Annual Parish
Festive Dinner and it was shared by a lot of
hard work and great company both in the
kitchen and during the event itself. It was
one busy weekend! So, as I did prior years,
this is now my third year as Grand Knight
and I am sitting in front of my computer
writing the Christmas article for our news
letter. Worthy Brothers, we are half way
through our fraternal year and as usual, I am
reflecting over the things we have done, the
changes that were made and some of the
events and/or obstacles we had overcome.
Our Festive Dinner has you thinking about
Advent, and right up to the Holiday Season
and Christmas.
I was sitting here and reflecting as to what,
as we as a council, have done to improve
the lives of others who need our help. The
same things keep coming up. We attended
and supported the Hospice cause. We stood
side by side with all our fellow Brother
Knights from various councils to provide
Hospice with a substantial donation, a much
needed gift. We again purchased boxes of
warm coats and donated them to the
Unemployed Help Center, as part of our
“Coats for Kids” program. Your generosity

A Message from Fr. Daniel.
A Message from the Grand
Knight
Dear Brother Knights,
For Christians, the
Advent season remains
a time to prepare for
Christmas, the celebra-
tion of the first coming
of the Lord. Advent
plunges us immediately
into the dynamic of the
mystery of our salvation.
The desires of the people of Jesus’ time
are not that different from the desires of
women and men today. We, too, long for
love and peace. We long to heal our broken
relationships and make our lives truly worth
living.
The message of the incarnation is not just
an invitation to behold an innocent baby
lying in a manger. The true Christmas story
is a vision of how God is present in the world
today. Jesus of Bethlehem asks us to let
him touch our hearts this Christmas with the
true spirit of the season. Let the celebration
of the birth of the messiah surprise us once
again with expectant joy. The Christ of love,
mercy and compassion is a welcomed
presence in the midst of our broken world.
A Christmas Prayer
Emmanuel, GOD who is truly with us, fill
our hearts with a firm conviction of your
loving presence. Help us to grow in
awareness that the kingdom of heaven is
indeed among us so that we may more
generously serve the needy.
Strengthen our commitments to each other
in the family and in the Church so that we
might be a sign of hope to the world and a
foundation for a more just social order. We
thank you for coming among us and
remaining with us always. Amen.
I wish you, my Brother Knights and your
families, a safe and holy Advent and
Christmas Season. Thank you for your
genuine witness to Christ in our midst.

continued to flow by giving your time to sell
newspapers during the “Good fellows” Paper
drive. We again prepared two lovely meals
for all preparing to go through Confirmation,
as one of our Faith programs. We again
hosted “Light Up for Christmas”, and served
hot chocolate and cookies to all the children
attending youth group. We help the less
fortunate in our community by serving at the
Downtown Mission, our strength in unity
shown by our volunteers. Your hard work is
reflected in the time you spend at the
bingos. You can be proud of all the money
you have raised because it translates to
healthy donations being poured out to our
local charities. The same goes to our
Brothers working hard at St. Vincent DePaul,
hosting degrees, and Special Olympics
bottle drives. Worthy Brothers, as your
Grand Knight, I thank you from the bottom of
my heart.
As I was sitting here in front of my
computer, I was thinking of pulling my notes
from the previous years and using them to
create my article; but, I think you are
catching on! Paragraph two is what I copied
and doctored up! So I guess I will give you
something new to read and reflect on.
Ever since I was a little kid, I was always
involved with the Church and religious
activities. My time was spent going to
Church Christmas Eve and performing in the
Christmas Pageants. The Minister and his
wife would write and direct all the little skits
(that’s right… Minister: I converted to being
a Catholic). Growing up, Christmas time was
always a big event within my family. It was
countless preparation, Christmas Eve
Dinner followed by Christmas service.
Presents were opened mainly on Christmas
Eve. Christmas Day brought another day of
food preparation for the Christmas Dinner,
but first, we went to Christmas Day service.
Relatives would be in and out all day at
either my Grandparents house or ours. My
relatives use to come from the States as
well. There were years where we went to
The States. By the time we were done we
looked forward to Boxing Day for rest, and
by the way, another Boxing Day meal. I
recall one year, where my Grandfather came
out from Hungary to celebrate Christmas
with us, only to be his last. He hid that he
had cancer and took ill while over here. As a
child, I watched all the Christmas programs,
from Dr. Seuss’s the “Grinch Who Stole
Christmas” to the “Little Drummer Boy” and
all in between. Don’t forget about “Merry
Christmas Charlie Brown”. My favorite is still
the “Little Drummer Boy”. Till this day it still
brings a tear to my eye.
As I sit here in front of my computer, I am
in tears. I can feel them rolling down my
cheek. I am saddened because the child I
was is now a man in his fifties. My
Christmases past are now fond memories.
My family from the past is no longer here. I
remember my grandparents (on my mother’s
side) so proud and so religious. Both of them
had passed close to the Christmas season.
You felt their absence Christmas Eve as we
carried on the tradition in their house. I recall
my Grandfather from Hungary. Realizing
today, the gift he gave us was not the
presents he brought with him, but himself.
He had to come see his sons that were now
living in Canada, along with their spouses
and grandchildren. Back then, you were not
allowed to come out to Canada if you were
terribly ill. He lied about his condition and
became severely ill between the holidays.
My father and uncle had to sneak him back
out of the country. He passed later that April.
The two biggest blows I took was the
passing of my parents. My mother passed in
1997, two weeks before Christmas. My
father passed four days before Christmas in
2007. I buried him December 27th. There
are times that I am not in the festive spirit.
The Christmases today are shared
between my wife Robin and the family we
created, Josh and Lauren. Some traditions
are old and some are new. We as a family
go to Christmas Eve mass to celebrate the

arrival of Christ. We open presents and have
dinner Christmas day. I don’t watch all the
television shows as I once did, but I still
reference the three I mention above. The
Grinch, you can’t stop Christmas, you can’t
stop the love for one another or to him. After
realizing all that, his heart grows three times
too big! In the Peanuts, Linus recites the
miracle of that holy night, the birth of Christ.
You have to remember the love they showed
for the little tree. The third that hits home is
the hard life of the Little Drummer Boy. He
suffers the loss of his mother and father, yet
experiences the miracle of life and being
reunited with his animal friends, especially
the little lamb. And you must remember the
wise man that encouraged the boy to play as
his gift to the New Born King!
I guess what I am getting at is love will
conquer all. As you sit in mass, especially
Christmas Eve, listen to the words, feel the
words to the greatest story ever told. Feel
the miracle and the arrival of our King. He
will take care and love of us all! No matter
what pain you feel, he will comfort you. From
my family to yours, l wish you and yours a
very Merry Christmas! Remember to keep
your loved ones close to you including the
ones that have left us, for they too are
celebrating with you. They are never too far
away from you. They are always in your
heart. Share this season with your fellow
man for the World needs all the love and
compassion it can get.
Peace to one and all. And
yes I still cry watching the
Little Drummer Boy.
Miss you Syd!

Financial Secretary Message:
Greetings Brothers,
On December 1, 2019, I will be printing up
the first notices and membership cards for
2020. Those living close to the parish will
be hand delivered while those outside the
area will be mailed. Again this year, if you
pay your membership dues for 2020 before
December 31, 2019, your name will be
entered into a draw with the winner receiving
their dues back. This will be drawn at the
first General Meeting in January 2020.
Please try to be prompt in paying your dues
as it saves the council funds but not having
to print out 2nd and 3rd notice and by not
having to spend extra funds for postage.
Thanks to some very fine brother knights,
we can hand delivery most of the notices.
After per capita to State Board and
Supreme, we only have about $3,400 to run
the council for a year if everyone pays their
dues. To date we still have $518 in
uncollected dues, which puts a strain on our
finances. Payment of dues is paramount to
the council being able to operate. Dues for
Regular members are $50, Senior’s $27,
Honorary $20 and Students $20. No one in
the council receives remuneration for his
position. Many members have already paid
their dues for 2020.
Please be a responsible
member and pay you dues
on time.

District Deputy Report:
December 29, 2019
Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of
Christ. It is a time for love and peace, charity
in our hearts and deeds, a time for friends
and family, and loneliness for some.
When I was 16, I had the privilege of
delivering Goodfellow baskets. Although I
will not discuss what I saw then, I will say
that there was a great need in our
community then as there still is now. Not
everybody has what many of us take for
granted, where it is food, shelter, family or
companionship.
I have recently returned from the Ontario
State District Deputy meeting. The overall
focus of the Knights has expanded to be
more inclusive of the family and community.
The Degrees will be changing to involve the
spouses and family in a single ceremony.
Two relatively new programs are the
Widows Program and the Seniors Program.
When Father Michael J McGivney founded
our Order in 1882, his primary focus was to
look after the widows and children of the
men who had died and left their families
without support.
Our social and fraternal activities and
community service programs often involve
our spouses and families. We get to know
each other and become friends. When a
brother Knight dies, this should not end this
relationship. The widow should not lose
contact with the friends she has met through
these activities, yet this is what happens in
some cases. Similarly, when a Knight ages
and is no longer able to participate in these
activities, ending up in a nursing home or
seniors residence, he should not be
forgotten. This applies not only to Knights,
but there are also many seniors who are
alone. I’m asking our brother Knights not to
forget these people. Invite them to our social
functions and Christmas celebrations. Visit
with them, let them know they are still
appreciated and valued. Not just at
Christmas, but throughout the year.
To my brother Knights,
our friends, and families:
have a safe and joyous
Christmas!

From the Choir
I am extremely pleased with the
efforts made by the choir as they
add song to the Eucharistic
Celebrations. Music is a very
important part of the liturgy and
it pleases me that these gentlemen give of
their time and talent to enhance our liturgies.
However, we are getting older and are in
dire need of new members to join our ranks
so that we can continue to provide music for
our masses.
Please come and join us. We are a fun
group. We get together to practice on the
Monday before we sing and we have posted
on our K of C Website all of our songs. You
do not need to purchase any music and as a
member, you will be provided with a choir
golf shirt.
Membership is open to all men of the parish
regardless if they are a Knight of Columbus
or not. We are proud to have you join us in
the celebration of the
Eucharist.
WE NEED YOU !!!

Volunteers cooked 12 turkeys, six hams
and 36 pumpkin pies for a Thanksgiving
meal Sunday at the Downtown Mission
“Wow. That was good.”, said one man as he
dropped off his just-emptied plate beside the
busy kitchen.
The mission welcomed 257 people to its
Thanksgiving lunch Sunday.
The Downtown Mission has been providing a
Thanksgiving meal since the mid-1970’s when
at first about 20 people came. Rukshini
Ponniah-Goulin, the mission’s director of
development, said Sunday.
The Mission feeds between 400 and 450
people a day at its Victoria Avenue building.
There are usually about 100 people for
breakfast, 200 to 250 people for lunch and
about 100 people for evening soup, said
Ponniah-Goulin. The number of meals served
at the mission and through its programs has
increased drastically over the last few years,
she said.
Art Huggins said he and eight volunteers were
lucky the Thanksgiving weekend fell on their
This year volunteers from Council 8919 and
Our Lady of the Atonement Parish assisted
in serving meals on Thanksgiving Day.
Below is an article that appeared in the
Windsor Star on October 14, 2019,
Sunday to serve. Huggins organized
volunteers from the Knights of Columbus with
Our Lady of the Atonement parish in Forest
Glade about a dozen years ago to serve
during the lunch hour at the mission. They
help every second Sunday of the Month.
“We are all God’s children and this is what
we’re here to do.” he said.
Jenny Loiselle, a service support worker at the
mission, said volunteers had been working
since early Saturday morning in the kitchen for
the special meal. The community donated
food and money to help boost the usual lunch
into a Thanksgiving meal. “It’s a chance for
fellowship with the community.” Loiselle said.
Ponniah-Goulin said the mission is about
providing a meal, shelter, hope and a feeling
of worth and belonging.
“Just because life circumstances have made it
difficult for some of our neighbours to have a
home, have the support of family or friends or
have the resources to provide a special meal
for themselves and even their families, we
strongly feel they still deserve to have that
meal and the feel like they’re not alone.”
She said the volunteers who serve on the
holiday weekend are a godsend. The mission
has about 800 active volunteers. About eight
people were serving the food during the lunch
hour Sunday.
The Salvation Army also served a
Thanksgiving meal Sunday.
Thanksgiving Luncheon at the
Windsor Downtown Mission.
To keep up the preparations moving
forward with both the host council and
Hospice throughout the year many
volunteers’ hours are involved in different
ways. It involves contacting by phone;
correspond by email and attending updates
meetings that includes driving back and
forward around the city. Throughout the
campaign there was many individuals
involved as well. 12 brother knights and 11
non-members worked regularly throughout
the campaign. At least 449 working Hours
were accumulated. There were some cost
expenses that I paid, but I am not asking for
reimbursement.
For the banquet
The host council prepared a good meal
and it was an excellent fraternal atmosphere
night for a good worthy cause event. There
were a total of 200 in Attendance. There
were 10 council’s 44 brother knights and
their wives, and 1 worthy Chaplin. The host
council had 12 non-members involved
helping out preparing for the banquet.
Visitation Council on November 9th 2019 at
the banquet reported that they raised
$20,695.00.
I believe that each year when the knights
and the community gather to raise money for
a worthy cause event such as The Annual
Fundraising Event For the Hospice, we are
truly demonstrating that caring and sharing –
Charity, & Unity, is a gift that all of us have
the privilege to share.
Personally, it gives me great pleasure
knowing that the compassionate and
generosity from this particular event, with the
hard works of Hospice, it continues to touch
the lives of many people in need. I’m so very
proud to say that my brother
Knights have never been
strangers to giving back to
the community.
Thank you all.

22nd Annual Knights of
Columbus Banquet for Hospice
by the Knights of Columbus Councils
I am very proud of my brother knights for
their ongoing support and participation to
host The Fundraising Event for Hospice.
Each year for the past 22 years a different
council stepped up to host The Annual
Fundraising Event.
Last year at the event banquet by Bishop
John T. Kidd Council 4924 I announced that
the Visitation council in Comber agreed to
host the knights annual fundraising for
Hospice, then I passed the Hospice award
on to them. In January (2019) I scheduled a
meeting at Hospice with the Hospice
Executive director Colleen Reaume . the
meeting was to confirm that I received a call
from the Grand Knight Noel Mailloux of
Visitation council, and soon they they will let
me know the date for the 2019 fundraising
banquet for Hospice.
Being the originator to the event, each
year for me the campaign starts from
January till the night of the banquet. I am
their contact, and my assistance to the host
council and Hospice is ongoing to help them
follow the usual procedures till the night of
the banquet. We usually meet several times
for updated meetings and the fist meeting
takes place at Hospice in January to discuss
the main focus to the event. Usually after I
meet with the host council they start making
their plans and preparations. The host
council to campaign and continues to raise
the money till the night of the banquet, with
the intensions to try to make their banquet
the best ever.
Most of the time, if possible, the banquet
takes place in October. However because
the hall was not available the banquet took
place on November 9th 2019.

Request for the end of the
Calendar Year
As we draw near to the end of the calendar
year, we are asking all Brother Knights who
have not yet paid their annual dues to
contact Financial Bob Cayea as soon as
possible to rectify that.
At the end of January the Council must
submit the Annual Survey of Fraternal
Activity. This form logs the financial support
we provide to local Charities, but also the
hours each member commits to those, as
well as all programs conducted through the
year. Included in those hours can be any
time devoted to assisting the parish,
community, or any charitable organization
not affiliated with the Knights of Columbus -
as although this time may not be directly
linked to the Knights, any hours you spend
in the betterment of our fellow man, you are
acting as a representative of the Knights of
Columbus, and should be included. We
encourage you to go to the Supreme
Website and download the PDF file, print it,
fill it out and submit it to FN Bob Cayea or
GK Dave Orosz by the middle of January.
This information is extremely valuable in
assisting the Knights of Columbus as an
organization, in retaining our Charitable
status. Please help us by completing and
submitting individual member form.

Light-up for Christmas
Each year at the beginning of December
four brother knights meet to clean and erect
the Nativity at the entrance of the parish
parking lot. Brothers Mike Agius, Greg
MacDonald, Mike MacLellan and Vern
Gagnon also hang the Keep Christ in
Christmas sign and string lights around the
sign and neighboring trees.
On Tuesday December 3rd following evening
mass, Fr. Daniel Bombardier led
parishioners out to the Nativity, Fr. Daniel
reflected on the meaning of Christmas and
the manner in which we should welcome the
coming of our Lord. He recited a prayer and
blessed the site, after which the nativity and
all lights were lit.
All attendees were then invited into St.
Francis Hall where they were treated to hot
chocolate and cookies.

This year our annual Knights festive dinner
saw a total of 154 meals being served in
the parish hall. Our guys on the cooking team
really outdid themselves with the fantastic
meal that they prepared. I want to thank each and every one of you that
had anything to do with helping to make this
dinner a huge success. What a great group of
men that we have in our council. I also want to
mention the students that did a great job serving,
clearing the tables and the clean up.

You Can Make It “A Wonderful Life”
Unlike the character ‘George Bailey’ in the
famous holiday movie, “It’s A Wonderful
Life”, none of us will have the opportunity of
seeing our lives played out as though we
had never been born. However, like George
Bailey, we cannot underestimate the
powerful impact we have in the lives of our
families, friends and the community.
Our impact will be felt by others through our
membership in the Knights of Columbus - by
volunteering as we are able - AND by
making sure we have enough life insurance
to meet the needs of our loved ones.
Life insurance allows our families to remain
in their homes and maintain their lifestyles. It
guarantees a college education for our
children, and perhaps our grandchildren. It
ensures for us a comfortable retirement. It
can even help our favourite charities
continue their humanitarian work.
This holiday season consider becoming an
insured member of the Knights of Columbus.
Give your family the gift of life insurance,
and make it a “wonderful life” for those you
love.
A Blessed Christmas Season to you and
your family.

In Memoriam
Though they may no longer be with us,
they shall never be forgotten.
December 29, 2019 18
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field,
keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord
shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good
tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ
the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in
swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host
praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
