Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows is a series of softwareoperating systems and graphical user interfacesproduced by Microsoft.

As of October 2009, Windows had approximately91% of the market share of the client operatingsystems for usage on the Internet

The most recent client version of Windows isWindows 8; the most recent server version isWindows Server 2008 R2; the most recent mobiledevice version is Windows Mobile 6.5.

Windows 1.0

Windows 2.0

Windows 2.0 was released in October 1987.

Windows 2.0 allowed application windows to overlap eachother and also introduced more sophisticated keyboard-shortcuts. It could also make use of expanded memory

Windows 2.1x

Windows 2.10 was released in May 1988 Windows 2.10 was released in two different flavors:

Windows/386 and Windows/286

Windows 2.11 was released in March 1989

Windows 3.0

Windows 3.0 was released in May 1990

Windows 3.0 improved the design because of virtual memory and loadable virtual device drivers which allowed to share arbitrary devices between multitasked DOS windows.

Windows 3.1x

Windows 3.1x was released in March 1992 With the introduction of Windows 3.11, Windows

was able to bypass DOS for file managementoperations using 32-bit file access.

Windows 95

Windows 95 was released in August 1995

Windows 95 was a new, and major, consumerversion that made further changes to the userinterface, and also used preemptive multitasking.

Windows 95 was designed to replace not onlyWindows 3.1, but also Windows for Workgroups,and MS-DOS. It was also the first Windowsoperating system to use Plug and Play capabilities.

Windows 98 was released in June 1998

Windows 98 was substantially criticized for itsslowness and for its unreliability compared withWindows 95, but many of its basic problems werelater rectified with the release of Windows 98Second Edition in May 1999

Windows 2000 was released in February 2000 whichupdated the core from Windows 98

Windows ME

Windows ME (Millennium Edition) was released inSeptember 2000

Windows ME updated the core from Windows 98 but adopted some aspects of Windows 2000 and removed the "boot in DOS mode" option

It also added a new feature called System Restore, allowing the user to set the computer's settings back to an earlier date.

Windows XP

Windows XP was released in October 2001 Windows XP was a version built on the Windows

NT kernel that also retained the consumer-oriented usability of Windows 95 and itssuccessors. This new version was widely praisedin computer magazines. It shipped in two distincteditions, "Home" and "Professional“.

Windows XP Professional was released in April2005

Windows Vista for volume licensing was releasedin November 2006, while for retails it was releasedin January 2007

It contains a number of new features, from aredesigned shell and user interface to significanttechnical changes, with a particular focus onsecurity features.

Windows 7 was released in October 2009

Windows 7 is the latest version of OperatingSystem. Mostly all the new computers comeswith Windows 7.

Windows 8• Windows 8 is an operating system for use on

personal computers, laptops, tablets, and home theater PCs.

• Its existence was first announced in January 2011 at Consumer Electronics Show.

• Windows 8 is scheduled for general availability on October 26, 2012.

• Windows 8 introduces significant changes to the operating system's graphical user interface and platform, such as a new interface design incorporating a new design language used by other Microsoft products.
