Why is STEM important? “The Nation’s future depends on our ability to educate today’s students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Despite the fact that many U.S. students excel in STEM,

U.S. students as a whole perform poorly on international comparisons of mathematical and

scientific proficiency”.

~ “Prepare and Inspire: K-12 Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for America’s Future”, a report

by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), published September 2010

Forsyth Central High School STEM Academy Purpose:

FCHS STEM Academy is focused on making

connections between rigorous academic core and innovative career-technical course offerings to engage students in relevant, real-

world studies.

Why is STEM important? It is essential that the U.S. maintain its position as the world’s

leading innovator. Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain

our industrial base; innovation depends on a solid knowledge base in math, science and engineering. All jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of

math and science. The most recent ten year employment projections by the U.S. Labor Department show that of the 20 fastest growing occupations projected for 2014, 15 of them require significant mathematics or science preparation to successfully compete for a job. (2004, Bureau of Labor and Statistics)

What is STEM? The integration and promotion of Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics.

ACADEMY INITIATIVES Create Engineering and Biotechnology academic programs Expand advanced Science and Mathematics course offerings Compete in co-curricular events including Science Fair,

Science Olympiad, Robotics, and Rocketry Develop Robotics Central, an engineering/robotics lab

available to all FCS students Promote Math Team, Technology Student Association, and

National Technical Honor Society Recognize the top STEM Scholar and academy completers at

graduation

Scientists and Engineers work in many of the same fields and industries but have different roles. Here are some examples:

Scientists Engineers

Study the planets in our solar system to understand them Study atomic structure to

understand the nature of matter Study the human

neurological system to understand the progression of neurological diseases

Study the planets so they can design a spacecraft to operate in the environment of that planet Study the atomic structure

in order to build smaller and faster microprocessors Study the human

neurological system to design artificial limbs
