2 INSTALLATION STEPS

TheForensicLabDockrequiresaSATAdataconnectioninsideyourcomputer.TheU5modelalsorequiresaUSBdataconnectionforthewrite-blockedUSBport,andtheS5modelrequiresaSASconnectiontoaRedPortSASwrite-blockedPCIehostbusadapter(HBA).Ifyoudonotalreadyhavethenecessaryconnectorsinsideofyourcomputer,youmustaddanHBAcardwiththeappropriateconnectorsintoanemptyexpansionslotinsideyourcomputer.

2.1 CONFIGURE HPA/DCO MODETheForensicLabDockgivesyoutheabilitytoselectthewayhiddenareasonharddrives(HPAsandDCOs)

arehandled.TheForensicLabDockwillonlynotifyyoubydefaultofthepresenceofthesehiddenareasby

blinkingtheHPA/DCOLEDindicator.Othermodesallowyoutoviewtheinformationinthesehiddenareas.

Tochangemodes,followthestepsbelow.Ifthedefaultbehaviorissatisfactory,continuetoSection2.2.

a. ConnectaUSBcablefromyourcomputertothe“SATA&PATAFirmwareConfigonly”USBporton

therearoftheForensicLabDock.YoumayfindthiseasiesttodobeforeinstallingtheForensicLabDock

insideacomputer.

b. ConnectaSATApowercablefromthecomputer’spowersupplytotherearoftheForensicLabDock.

c. Flipthepowerswitchtothe1positiontopowertheForensicLabDockon.

d. DownloadandinstalltheForensicSoftwareUtility—afreesoftwareapplicationdesignedforusewith

theForensicLabDock:www.cru-inc.com/support/software-downloads/forensic-software-utility/

e. OpentheForensicSoftwareUtilityandnavigatetotheHPA/DCOBehaviortab.

f. Selectthedesiredbehavior(leavetheminplace,removeHPAtemporarilybutignoreDCO,removeHPA

permanentlybutignoreDCO,orpermanentlyremovethemboth).

g. ClicktheSetHPA/DCOBehaviorbutton.

h. TurntheForensicLabDockoffandunplugitfromtheUSBandSATApowercables.

2.2 INSTALL THE FORENSIC LABDOCK INTO YOUR COMPUTERa. MounttheForensicLabDockintoanempty5.25”drivebayinsideofyourcomputer.Donotscrewit

intoplaceuntilallthecableshavebeenconnected.

b. ConnectaSATApowercablefromthecomputer’spowersupplytotherearoftheForensicLabDock.

c. AttachtheSATAdatacablefromyourcomputersystemtotherearoftheForensicLabDock.

d. Connecttheremainingopendataport(USBontheU5modelandSATAontheS5model)ontherearof

theForensicLabDocktoyourcomputersystem.ThereareseparatewaystoconnectforbothSATAand

USBdevices,whicharedetailedonthenextpage.

BothmodelscontainaUSBportthatisusedforfirmwareconfigurationonly.UsetheUSBportonthefarrightthatislabeled“ConnectUSBForFrontPanelUSBWriteBlocker”instead.

ForSATA:

• ConnectaSATAdatacabletotherearoftheForensicLabDockandtheotherendtoanavailable

portonyourwrite-blockedRedPortSASHBAcard.

Connectingthepass-throughporttoanyhostotherthanaRedPortcardwillresultinthecorre-spondingfrontpanelportbecomingread/writeratherthanwrite-blocked.

e. UsetheprovidedscrewstosecuretheForensicLabDockintothe5.25”drivebay.

Usingscrewsotherthantheprovidedmountingscrewsmayputpressureonthedrivecubby,makingitdifficulttoinsertandremovedrivesfromit.Alwaysusetheprovidedmountingscrewswherepos-sible.

2.3 CONNECTING HARD DRIVES TO THE FORENSIC LABDOCK

2.3.1 SATA Hard Drivesa. Inserttheharddriveintothecubby.Facethepoweranddataconnectionsideoutward.

b. AttachtheincludedSATAdata/powerconnectortotherearofthedrive.

c. Connectthe4-pinpowercableontheSATAdata/powerconnectortothepowerportonthefrontof

theForensicLabDock.

d. ConnecttheeSATAdatacableoftheSATAdata/powerconnectortothewrite-blockedeSATAport

nexttothepowerswitchonthefrontoftheForensicLabDock.

e. Flipthepowerswitchtothe1positiontopowertheForensicLabDockon.

2.3.2 IDE (PATA) Hard Drivesa. Inserttheharddriveintothecubby.Facethepoweranddataconnectionsideoutward.

b. Attachtheincludedappropriately-sizedIDEcableandtheincluded40-pinlegacyMolexpowercable

toyourharddrive.Bothconnectorsarekeyedtofitonlyoneway.

c. RemoveanyeSATAconnectorfromtheeSATAportnexttothepowerswitchonthefrontofthe

ForensicLabDock.IDE/PATAdrivescannotberecognizedifaSATAconnectionisdetected.

d. ConnecttheotherendsoftheIDEcableandthe40-pinlegacyMolexpowercabletotheappropriate

write-blockedportsonthefrontoftheForensicLabDock.

e. Flipthepowerswitchtothe1positiontopowertheForensicLabDockon.

Ifthecomputerfailstorecognizethethumbdrive,cyclethethumbdrive’spower(butremovingandreinsertingitorswitchingitoffandonagain)andthenpresstheRemountbutton.

2.3.5 USB Drive Enclosures (Available only on U5 models)ThisfeatureisusefulforpreviewingthecontentsofaUSBdriveenclosuretodetermineifitcontains

digitalevidencethatyouneedtoacquire.Ifitdoes,youcanthendecidewhethertoacquiretheevi-

dencethroughtheUSBconnectionortoopenthedriveenclosureandattachthebareharddrivetothe

ForensicLabDockwithanIDEorSATAwrite-blockedconnection.

SupportedUSBdriveenclosureshavethefollowingcharacteristics:

• Areseenasasinglephysicaldevicebyyourcomputer’sOS

• ArepoweredbyanACadapteroranextraUSBbuspowercable

ConnectthedriveenclosuretotheForensicLabDock’s“USBWriteBlocker”portwithaUSBcableand

theForensicLabDockon.

3 HOTSWAPPING WITH MAC AND WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS

3.1 MAC OS XUnmountthevolumebeforepoweringdowntheForensicLabDockbydraggingthevolume’sicontothe

Trash,orbyselectingthevolumethenpressingCommand-E.Oncethevolumehasdisappeared,turnthe

ForensicLabDockoff.IfyouareusingaSASorSATAdevice,CRUrecommendsusingaSASorSATAhost

busadapter(HBA)cardthatsupportshotswapping.Otherwise,MacOSXwillnotsupporthotswapping

withSATAdevices.

IfyouareconnectingaUSBdevicetotheForensicLabDock,swapoutthenewdrive,turntheForensic

LabDockon,andMacOSXwillautomaticallydetectthenewdrive.

3.2 WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS

3.2.1 Hotswapping a SAS or SATA DeviceCRUrecommendsusingaSASorSATAhostbusadapter(HBA)cardthatsupportshotswappinginorder

toeasilyejectandremountdrives.

Ifyouhaveahostbusadapter(HBA)cardthatsupportshotswappinginstalled,unmountthevolume

beforepoweringitdownbyleft-clickingontheUSB plug iconwiththegreencheckmarkonthe

Desktoptaskbarandthenselectingtheproperdevicefromthemenuthatpopsup.Youmayhaveto

clickontheShow Hidden Icons arrowonthetaskbartofindthecorrecticon.Windowswillindicate

whenitissafetoturntheForensicLabDockoff.ReconnectanewdrivetotheForensicLabDock,turnit

on,andyoursystemwillautomaticallydetectthenewdrive.

IfyoudonothaveanHBAinstalled,followthesesteps:

a. FortheWindows8productfamily,pressWINKEY + X,thenselectDevice Managerfromthemenu

thatpopsup.

ForWindows7,Vista,andtheWindowsServer2008and2012productfamilies,right-clickonthe

Computer buttonintheStartMenuandselectManage.IntheleftpaneoftheComputerManage-

mentwindowthatopens,left-clickonDevice Manager.

b. ExpandtheDisk drives section.

c. PowerofftheForensicLabDockbyturningthepowerswitchtothe0position.

d. InDeviceManager,clicktheScan for hardware changes buttoninthetoolbar.Notethatthe

targetdrivehasdisappearedfromthelistofdrives.

e. ConnectanewdrivetotheForensicLabDockS5.

f. TurnthepowerswitchontheForensicLabDockS5tothe1positiontoturntheuniton.

g. InDeviceManager,clicktheScan for hardware changes buttoninthetoolbaragain.Thenew

volumewillnowappear.

6.1 WHAT IS AN HPA AND A DCO?AHostProtectedArea(HPA)andDeviceConfigurationOverlay(DCO)arereservedareasonaharddrive

thatarenotaccessiblebytheBIOSorOS.DatacanbehiddenbehindanHPAorDCO.CRUforensic

devicescanalertyouifthereisanHPAorDCOsothatyouareawareofitandcantakethenecessarysteps

toretrievethehiddendata.

6.2 WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO UPDATE THE FIRMWARE OF MY CRU FORENSIC DEVICE?Firmwarerelatestotheprogramsanddatathatcontrolelectronicproducts.Firmwareisenhancedover

time,usuallytoaddnewfeaturesorincreasecompatibility.Updatingfirmwarecanimprovethefunctionality

anddependabilityofyourproduct.IfyourCRUforensicdeviceisusingoutdatedfirmware,CRU’sConfigu-
