Force & Motion Presentation

Enjoy!

What’s so important about forces and motion?

Forces are constantly at work.

Forces cause motion.

Let’s look into this further…

Forces A force is a push or a pull.

For example, how do you open a door?

You probably push it open and pull it shut (or reverse).

Forces

Have you ever played tug of war?

Forces

Here are some more examples:

Motion Motion is how an object’s position changes over time.

In other words, movement.

Speed Speed is a measurement of distance over time.

In other words, how fast or slow something is moving.

For example:

30 miles per hour

Acceleration Acceleration is a change in motion caused by a

change in speed.

When you speed up, you are accelerating.

Velocity Velocity is an object’s speed in a particular direction.

If you add a direction to an object’s speed, you are

describing its velocity.

I drove North at 30 miles per hour.

Inertia Objects remain at rest or in motion unless acted on

by a force.

Example: If a car stops fast, wearing your seatbelt can cause you to stop moving too. Otherwise, you

would keep moving even if the car stopped.

Gravity Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward the

center of the Earth.

Example: If an apple falls from a tree, it will fall to the ground because of gravitational pull.

Friction Forces that slow down or stop movement.

Example: A golf ball will roll to a complete stop because the friction of the grass slows it down.

Examples of forces and motion can be found everywhere you look! See how many examples

you can identify in your classroom, at home, or the next

time you are out!
