Roi-roi is a handheld Brazilian percussion instrument.
There are two ways to play it:
1) With your dominant hand, hold the wood stick vertically (the string and the resonator should be in a resting
position). While holding the stick, make the resonator spin, producing a continuous sound.
It is possible to control the speed of the roi-roi by controling how fast the resonator is spinning. In this piece, I
used 5 different speeds, ranging from:
as slow (and as quiet) as possible to
as fast (and as loud) as possible.
2) Hold the stick with your dominant hand and with the other hand hold the resonator. Gently pull the
resonator away from the stick, in order to stretch and increase the tension in the string. With your thumb and
index finger, quickly twist the stick, producing a sharp,, sometimes uneven sound.
It is possible to control the duration of these sounds, ranging from:
Extremely short (tweak the stick, producing an extremely short note, as in “staccato”)
Short and continuous (tweak the stick for a little longer, producing a short note, as in “sforzando”)
Medium-length and continuous (twist the stick for a full circle, producing a medium-length note, as in “legato”)

Audience Audience
From measures 22-86 flutists and percussionists should walk around the stage, following the directions on the diagram below. Flutist 1 (in yellow, left) should carry Piccolo at all times, even when playing slide whistles, harmonicas or pipes. Flutist 2 (in red, right) should arrive on position 5 playing slide whistles. Then s/he should leave the slides and walk on stage quietly, behind the ensemble, to the initial position. Percussionist 1 (in purple) and Percussionist 2 (in green) should stay in the back of the hall from the beginning of the piece until m. 69. They should avoid being noticed by the audience until m. 16

Disklav.
Drag the superball on the strings of the piano,
producing a sustained, deep but moderately quiet sound.
w/superball
¿Drag a large glass throughout the strings of the piano. Try to imagine the board of the piano as a canvas in which you're drawing with the glass.
Use the graphic above as a reference, but feel free to improvise with other types of movements and patterns. If necessary, you can "clean" the accumulated sounds by quickly and quietly releasing and pressing the pedal.
The overall sonority should be "mysterious" and should not overpower the sounds made by the percussion instruments. Try to balance your sound with theirs.
/ ∑ ∑
Track 6 should be triggered right after the pianist stops playing with the superball.
Although the track is precisely 1min11sec, the exact location where the track will stop
will depend on how much time measure 69 will take.

Cuíca
Instructions for Cuíca: Put your dominant hand inside the instrument. Hold the stick using a small wet cloth. To produce low sounds: hold it tight and slide. To produce high sounds: hold it a loose and slide.
To alter the pitch more dramatically you can use your non-dominant hand to press down the skin (more pressure = higher pitches, less pressure = lower pitches).
Place your fingers lightly on the skin: index finger (2) close to the center, then middle finger (3), ring finger(4) and pinky (5) near the rim.
Press the skin with each finger to produce a range of notes from high (2) to low (5) or no pressure (0). Down bow symbol = slide down, up bow symbol = slide up.
