What is a Food Borne Illness?

• An illness caused by eating food contaminated with too much bacteria.

How common is Food Borne Illness?

• Extremely common! There are millions of cases each year.

What are some general symptoms of Food Borne Illness?

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Abdominal Cramps

• Diarrhea

• Headaches

• Fever

• Fatigue

• Body Aches

How serious is Food Borne Illness?• It can be very mild or potentially fatal

(deadly!)

What does a virus need to be able to grow?

• A Host (something to live and multiply in)

How are most Food Borne Illnesses spread?• When food is left in the temperature

danger zone for too long

How can most food borne illnesses be prevented?• Using safe food handling practices

• Keeping food out of the temperature danger zone

What is the temperature danger zone?• Any temperature BETWEEN 41ºF and

135ºF

SalmonellaA. Found In:

• RAW POULTRY AND EGGS• Fish• Unpasteurized Milk

B. Symptoms:• Headaches• Diarrhea• Cramps• Vomiting

E. ColiA. Found In:

• UNDERCOOKED GROUND BEEF• Unpasteurized Milk• Improperly handled or stored foods• Contaminated Water

B. Symptoms:• Severe bloody diarrhea• Cramps• Fever

Staphylococcus (Staph)A. Found In:

• HUMAN MUCOUS (Sneezing, Coughing, etc.)• Spoiled starchy foods (potatoes, cake fillings,

etc.)

B. Symptoms:• Nausea• Vomiting• Diarrhea• Severe Cramping

BotulismA. Found In:

• IMPROPERLY CANNED FOODS• Soil• Contaminated Water

B. Symptoms:• Weakness• Constipation• Double Vision• Difficulty Breathing• Impaired Speech

Hepatitis AA. Found In:

• FECES (Poop)• Improper hand washing after using the

restroom

B. Symptoms:• Flu-like symptoms• Vomiting • Severe Diarrhea
