Folktales

• Folktales are stories

told by people.

• One Folktale you

may remember is

Jack and the

Beanstalk.

• Folktales are

stories that are

told from

generation to

generation, like

the story of the

tooth fairy.

• Many folktales are

make believe.

• Some folktales are

part make believe and

part real.

• That means that the

characters themselves

were probably real

people.

• Some folktales teach a lesson like the story of

the Tortoise and the Hare.

• Also, in some folktales, animals can talk.

• Some folktales can

be scary.

• Some folktales

are also tall

tales.

• That means

they are

exaggerated

and sometimes

funny.

Characteristics of Folktales

• simple and straightforward

• includes magic or supernatural powers

• characters represent human qualities such as

good, evil, wisdom, foolishness, laziness

• problems and conflicts are clear

• ending usually happy or satisfying

• good usually rewarded, evil punished

Types of Folktales

• Fables

• Fairy tales

• Legends

• Myths

Fable• Short stories teach a lesson or moral

• animal characters with human

characteristics

• stress themes such as: the value of

cooperation, looking at problems from

different viewpoints, rewards if being

satisfied

• some have several layers of meaning (Indian

tales)

• Morals are not stated directly

• listener must find their own moral in the tale

Fairytales

• Include good and bad characters

• A hero or heroine

• Magic or fantasy

• Includes predictable beginnings and endings

“Once upon a time” “Happily ever after”

• Problem which is usually overcome through

kindness, courage, intelligence
