    JULY 2016

    THE SGS CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT NEWSLETTER

FOCUS ON DANUBE AN SGS CORPORATE NEWSLETTER FOR AGRICULTURAL SERVICES

    Dear Customer,

At SGS, we’re delighted that the 2016 harvest season for the Danube Region is about to start: the industry expects another busy – and interesting – export season.

Once again, the outlook suggests large crop yields – although late rains in some areas may create possible quality concerns and delays to the harvest. For example, strong storms in Serbia had stopped the progress of harvesting at the time of writing this article.

In addition, the districts that have noted the presence of fusarium will need to keep a close eye on quality and to monitor for toxins. SGS agronomists are presently scouting the production areas to gather information on the potential for yield, quality and diseases within the forthcoming crops. As soon as samples are available, our testing laboratories will be compiling data for input to our quality map and mycotoxin monitoring services.

Employing 500 people full-time, all with a focus on the agricultural commodity supply chain, the SGS region-wide network of offices, laboratories and inspection resources continues to lead the industry.

We believe a team approach is the best way to deliver high quality services to our customers. This is why we have fully aligned our activities in Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania to func-tion as “One Danube”. You can meet our unified local team in this issue, which will also update you on the latest developments, capabilities and new services available in the region.

We hope you enjoy the articles and that you’ll get in touch with our regional team soon.

    PAUL HARRISON

    Vice President Trade & Logistics

    BULGARIA

Mobile testing and data capture have been the focus for SGS in Bulgaria in 2016. Preparations are well underway for the 2016 harvest and new equipment for express testing of oilseeds has been installed, checked and calibrated, in Varna.

Our new express analyser is uniquely able to conduct whole kernels analyses for the fat content of oilseeds, including sunflower seeds. In addition, testing can be carried out truck-by-truck during loading operations. Test results are then made available in our Goods Monitoring Tracing System (GMTS), as implemented by SGS at all ports.

GMTS centralises all of the data within a single system that’s accessible via the web, making it easy and convenient to use from any location. The system also helps to improve the management of the logistical and quality control aspects of dry cargo accumulation, imports and exports. Access to this system has been given to main trading companies to follow the loading process in real time.

    MOBILE TESTING & DATA

Launched late last year, our mobile testing service has been a success and

we are now updating the software to accept data offline, as well as online, making it much easier to operate in areas where there is no internet connection.

    SPOT ANALYSES

To help meet demand for faster testing turnaround times, the local team have introduced spot analysis services at Svishtov, on the Danube. With turnaround times as quick as 20 minutes, tests can be conducted on various grains for moisture content and the presence of mycotoxins.

    NEW EQUIPMENT

Investment in new equipment for pesticide residue testing has increased the local capacity and enabled a reduction in turnaround times.

    P. 3N° X • XXXXXXXX 2008 P. 4 JULY 2016

2016 marks SGS’s 25th year operating in Hungary. Established in 1991 with just 20 employees, today our Hungarian operations employ 200 people. In 25 years we have inspected more than 150 million metric tones (MMT) of grains and conducted more than 3 million analysis.

For 2016, the team is focusing on quality by helping clients to identify amounts that are high/low in Oleic acid, with a new ‘on-the-spot’ solution. Grains look the same whatever their oleic acid content, but now we can test them wherever they are in the trading process, enabling high to be separated from low, and prices optimised.

HYDROGEN PHOSPHINE – PH3EU rules limiting PH3 residues to just 0.1 ppm are challenging. We have launched a service, unique to Hungary, for the rapid testing and identification of PH3 traces in grain that has been fumigated during storage and/or transportation. On-the-spot testing, conducted during loading, helps to guarantee that goods will not be rejected at their destination.

    GMO TESTING

Newly launched, SGS Hungary’s GMO testing services can identify GMO traits and contamination. We have invested in new equipment and staff to conduct the testing, and work is well underway to complete the full accreditation process.

    ACCREDITATION

ISO 17025 accredited, our lab is one of the most advanced facilities in the country, and the scope of our analytical services includes more than 500 accredited parameters. We perform:

    • Physical analysis • Chemical analysis • Heavy metals • Pesticide residues • Mycotoxins • Microbiological analysis

    PESTICIDE SCREENING

Pesticide residue testing is an important part of our business. The pesticide screening list changes dynamically, and substances are added frequently. We ensure our capabilities are updated to match.

ROMANIAIn Romania, SGS has built on the successes and investments of 2015. More personnel and new equipment have allowed the team to focus on extending accreditations, reducing turnaround times and improving fumigation services.

We are pleased to announce that in addition to our existing capabilities, our pesticides and heavy metals testing services are now also ISO 17205 accredited.

    SAMPLING ACCREDITATION

Sampling and analysis go together. To ensure that the highest standards are met and maintained, the team have standardised their sampling operations. As a result of their efforts, and following a successful audit, they are now ISO 17020 accredited for sampling.

    LARGER LABORATORY

To cope with increasing levels of activity in Romania, the laboratory at Constanta Port has increased its capacity for protein and oil content analysis. At the same time, capacity for falling number, gluten, GI index and WPL testing has been doubled.

Many tests can be completed in 24 hours, including mycotoxins and heavy metals testing.

Testing and analysis for mycotoxins, aflatoxins, heavy metals, pesticide residues, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and moisture content continues as before.

    FUMIGATION & PEST CONTROL

In Constanta, we now have a DDD (disinfection, disinfestations and deratisation) licence enabling us to conduct all pest control. We are also J Category GAFTA members and can perform fumigation by probe, in sleeves and J-system, or a combination of in sleeves and J-system.

    NATIONWIDE NETWORK

Our network of offices, in Timisoara, Turnu Severin, Turnu Magurele, Craiova, Bucuresti, Giurgiu, Calarasi, Slobozia, Braila, Iasi and Suceava, offer fast and efficient access to all inspection sites. However, the biggest pool of inspectors is based at Constanta Port, where teams operate 24/7.

SERBIASupporting the commodities trade across Serbia, SGS’s local team has developed new toxin mapping and pre-harvest analysis services, as well as invested in a new laboratory and its equipment.

    TOXIN MAPPING

Toxin mapping involves the sampling and analysis of grains; for all our clients we will perform more than 200 analyses. The results deliver an understanding of what is present and what to expect of this year’s crops.

    PRE-HARVEST ANALYSIS

Work begins well before the harvest. Inspectors visit fields seven day before the harvest is due to start. Samples are taken and returned to our lab for analysis. Once completed, the client is presented with a report detailing quality parameters, including:

    • Protein (%) • Moisture (%) • Falling number • Foreign material (%) • Test weight (kg/hl)

    Business Manager

    STARA PAZOVA LAB OPERATIONAL

SGS Serbia’s new laboratory facilities, opened in late 2015, and are now fully operational and equipped for the full range of quality and export analyses. Strategically located in Stara Pazova, this laboratory services the ports of Novi Sad and Belgrade (Pančevo). ISO 17025 accredited this has enabled the team to increase their sampling and testing capacity, as well as reduce turnaround times.

    NEW EQUIPMENT

Investing in the future, a new PCR machine installed in 2016 enables the team to provide faster GMO testing, thereby also increasing capacity. This installation means the laboratory now has two PCR machines.
