Application and Operation
Powers transformers are critical to Transmission and D ist r ibut ion substations. In fact, losing a unit can have a major financial consequence. To protect your investment, use Acoustic Emission Testing. This technique is superior to electric methods for on-site tests. The AE-150 detects and locates Partial Discharges in power transformers. This is done by analyzing ultrasonic waves produced by a breakdown of the electrical insulation. The ultrasonic waves travel through the oil and strike the metallic shell of the transformer, providing the AE-150 with the signals needed to locate the problem. The instrument is placed on the metallic surface with the help of the integrated magnetic attachment system. This system provides an easy way of moving the AE-150 to survey the entire transformer. The remote user interface and the RF communication system allow safe operation of the unit even in the most hostile environments. Developed in partnership with Hydro-Quebec and IREQ, the AE-150 brings a high level of acoustic and electrical expertise in an easy-to-use and efficient product.
Key Features
A key feature of the AE-150 is t he capab i lit y to s ync hr on ize aco us t i c emission signals with the electric partial discharge signal. Powerful noise suppression is then achieved t h r o u g h a v e r a g i n g , increasing dramatically the probability of localization.

Overview
The AE-150 is remotely operated using a convivial software interface called Mirador Tx. The software
supports both automatic and manual configuration modes. The automat i c mode requires minimal parameter entry from the user. The Auto-Loc feature will then
configure the AE-150 with optimal settings and proceed w ith a sequence of acquisitions that will lead to a successful diagnostic.
Mirador Tx Software
AE-150 localization software interface
Mirador Tx software is a partial discharge localization software for power transformers with automatic localization algorithms for non-expert users.
Auto-Loc
The Auto-Loc feature provides the end user with fully automated acquisition sequences. Minimal conf iguration parameters are required from the user to lead to a successful part ial discharge localization. Special confidence level gauges give indications on the coherence of the localization results.
Phase related acquisitions
Mirador Tx will also provide phase related acquisitions such as phase histogram or phase averaging, useful to confirm the presence of partial discharge.
Advanced user mode
Acquisition :
This mode allows manual settings of acquisition parameters such as gains, thresholds, acquisition length and type, trigger sources, averaging etc.
Localization
This window presents required parameters for 3D localization.
• Tank dimensions
• Device position on tank
• Device rotation etc.
Speed of sound in steel and oil can be adjusted if required.
Advanced user mode ...
Control Panel :
An intuitive control panel will trigger manual acquisitions and display status information about the remote unit such as:
• Battery level
• RF communication strength
• Phase detection
• Inhibition channels
