TWO MEDICINAL PLANTSPEPPERMIN

ARNICA

MEDICINAL PLANTSMedicinal plants have been

identified and used throughout human history. Plants have the

ability to synthesize a wide variety of chemical compounds

that are used to perform important biological functions,

and to defend against attack from predators such as insects, fungi

and herbivorous mammals.

• Synergic medicine- The ingredients of plants all interact

simultaneously, so their uses can complement or damage

others or neutralize their possible negative effects.

• Support of official medicine- In the treatment of complex cases

like cancer diseases the components of the plants proved to be

very effective.

USES OF MEDICINAL PLANTS

• Preventive medicine- It has been proven that the component

of the plants also characterize by their ability to prevent the

appearance of some diseases. This will help to reduce the use of

the chemical remedies which will be used when the disease is

already present i.e., reduce the side effect of synthetic treatment.

PEPPERMINTKingdom: Plantea

Division: Angiosperms

Trico pates: Eudicots

Order: Lamiae

Family: Lamiaceae

Genus: Mentha

Peppermint (Mentha × piperita, also known as M. balsamea Willd.) is

a hybrid mint, a cross between watermint and spearmint. The plant, indigenous to Europe and the Middle

East, is now widespread in cultivation in many regions of the world. It is found wild occasionally

with its parent species.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTSPeppermint has a high menthol

content. The oil also contains menthone and menthyl esters, particularly menthyl acetate.Dried peppermint typically has

0.3-0.4% of volatile oil containing menthol (7-48%), menthone (20-46%), menthyl acetate (3-10%), menthofuran (1-17%)

and 1,8-cineol (3-6%).Peppermint oil also contains small amounts of many

additional compounds including limonene, pulegone, caryophyllene and pinene.

ARNICAKingdom: Plantae

Division: Angiosperms

Trico pates: Eudicots

Order: Asterales

Family: Asteraceae

Subfamily: Asteroideae

Tribe: Heliantheae

Subtribe: Madiinae

Genus: Arnica

Arnica is a genus of perennial, herbaceous plants

in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The genus name

Arnica may be derived from the Greek arni, "lamb", in reference to the soft, hairy

leaves.

MEDICINAL USESCommercial Arnica preparations are

frequently used by professional athletes. According to The Memorial Sloan-

Kettering Cancer Center, "A few clinical trials suggest benefits of topical arnica

for osteoarthritis; and for affecting significant reduction of bruising

compared to placebo or low concentration vitamin K ointments.

However, a small study reported that topical arnica actually increased pain 24

hours after calf exercises."
