From the Editor
I am so excited to join the Flow
Control team! As I write my first
editor letter, I am preparing to
travel to New York for Chem Show,
a biannual event in the heart of
New York City. Our team will meet
with industry experts and learn about
new trends in the chemical pro-
cess industry. Earlier this year during
the Water Environment Federation
Technical Exhibition and Conference,
I was happy to help Publisher Mike
Christian present Magnetrol with its
2015 Innovation Award (see image
to the right). Be sure to visit our
website for event updates and blogs,
and follow @FlowControl_Mag and
@LoriDitoro on Twitter for live updates
during other trade shows throughout
2016.
Flow measurement is one of many parameters on which we focus. In this issue
dedicated to flow meter technology, we take a look at the major meter types and
their manufacturers.
On page 6, contributor Jesse Yoder, Ph.D., of Flow Research Inc., writes about
the emerging trend of using multiple technologies to measure flow. In today’s com-
plex fluid-measurement world, more parameters must be considered, such as the
content of the fluid, required accuracy, the application, and equipment and person-
nel safety.
Throughout this issue, Yoder provides snapshots of different meters and what
differentiates them from each other. In some snapshots, he also details the meter’s
history and improvements. Be sure to check out our directory of flow meter manu-
facturers throughout the issue as well. We appreciate all Jesse Yoder’s contribu-
tions to this flow-meter-packed issue.
As I begin my tenure as editor-in-chief of Flow Control and
we produce our last issue of 2015, our team wishes you a
wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year! FC
Warmest regards,

Multi-Technology: The Next Generation of Flow Meters
For many years, end users have typically asked one ques-
tion when they need to measure flow: What type of meter
should I use? The answer depends on a number of vari-
ables, including fluid type (liquid or gas), required accuracy, ap-
plication (custody transfer or not), fluid temperature and pres-
sure, and preferred vendor. Today, the situation has become
more complicated. In many cases end users are better advised
to ask: What combination of instruments best fits my applica-
tions? The answer might still be a single flow meter technology,
but it might also include accompanying instrumentation. Alter-
nately, the answer could involve multiple flow meters.
Why the Trend Toward Multi-Technology?One reason behind the trend toward multiple technologies
is that fluid measurement has become more complex, and
more variables need to be included in analyses. For example,
multiphase meters have been developed to determine the
percentage of oil, gas and water produced from a well.
This difficult application requires measuring flowrates and
densities. In some multiphase measurements, differential
pressure-style Venturi meters and Coriolis meters are used.
The Coriolis meter measures density, while the Venturi deter-
mines flowrate. Research on these meters began in the
mid-1980s when output from North Sea oil wells began to
decline.
A second reason is that flow measurement accuracy and
repeatability requirements have increased with the value of
the fluid. Even though the price of crude oil decreased from
2014 to 2015, crude oil and natural gas continue to play in-
creasingly important roles as energy sources worldwide. This
means that crude oil, refined fuels and natural gas are mea-
sured more often, and that variables such as temperature
and pressure need to be taken into account in these mea-
surements. As a result, meters such as differential pressure,
turbine and vortex are often accompanied by pressure and
temperature sensors and/or transmitters. Multivariable flow
meters measure volumetric flow and can also compute mass
flow based on temperature and pressure values. Multivariable
flow meters often measure gas flow, which is typically deter-
mined as a mass flow value.
Increased safety concerns also led to the use of more in-
strumentation in flow measurement. Because of natural gas’
explosive nature, its pressure and temperature must be care-
fully monitored and controlled, usually with temperature and
pressure sensors and transmitters.
Compound Flow MetersCompound meters (hybrid technology) are commonly used
to measure water for residential and industrial applications.
They combine positive displacement and turbine meters into
a single meter designed to efficiently measure flow in low-
flow and medium- to high-flow applications. Apartment build-
ings provide a good example of their use. During the morning
and evening hours, liquid flowrates are high, as residents use
large amounts of water. During medium to high flowrates, the
turbine component of the compound meter measures flow.
In the middle of the night, flowrates drop dramatically while
residents sleep. During these times of low flow, the positive
displacement meter measures the water flow.
The VorCone MeterDuring the October 2015 North Sea Flow Measurement
Workshop in Tønsberg, Norway, Eric Sanford of Vortek
Instruments presented a description of a combination vortex
meter and cone meter. This meter, called the VorCone, places
a vortex flow meter before a cone meter in the flow stream.
Because cone meters require very little upstream piping
because of their design, the vortex meter does not interfere
with the operation of the cone meter. The VorCone meter’s
design for measuring volumetric flow mass flow and density
has been tested but is still in development. Overall it is meant
to be a simple, relatively inexpensive gas mass flow meter.
The Dual Flowtube MeterAnother meter design, patented by Flow Research, has two
equal sized tubes inside a pipe. Each tube has a flow sensor,
and the area of each tube is a quarter of the inside diameter
of the pipe. This design offers redundancy and the potential
for better accuracy because flow is measured in two locations
rather than one. The dual flowtube meter is compatible with
eight different flow technologies and is currently being tested.

flowtube meter, visit www.flowtubemeter.com. FC

CORIOLIS
Coriolis Meters Are an Accurate Option
The Coriolis flow meter market
has been one of the fastest
growing during the past five
years. In many process plants, users
select them to replace differential
pressure meters. Despite the higher
initial purchase price, many users
find them to be a good investment.
Coriolis meters can more eas-
ily measure liquids than gases
because liquids are denser. Tradi-
tionally, they were expensive and
unwieldy in line sizes above 4
inches, but during the past several
years, a number of suppliers have
developed varieties above 6 inch-
es. With more options in the large-
line segment, Coriolis flow meters
may gain wider acceptance in large
line size applications.
Also an important feature, Co-
riolis meters measure mass flow,
while most other flow meters, ex-
cept for thermal meters, measure
volumetric flow. Volumetric flow can be measured by collect-
ing fluid into small compartments and counting how many
times the compartments are filled. This is how positive dis-
placement meter’s work. It is like pouring milk from a large
container into individual cups and counting the cups.
Why Measure Mass Flow? Many products are sold by weight rather than volume, so
measuring mass flow is preferable in some cases to measur-
ing volumetric flow, and chemical reactions are often based
on mass rather than volume.
Mass flow is especially ap-
propriate for measuring gases
because they are much more af-
fected by temperature and pres-
sure than liquids. Pressure has
minimal effect on liquid com-
pressibility and is often ignored
in the volumetric measurement
of flow. The effects of tempera-
ture on liquids are also often dis-
regarded, except when high accuracy is required.
While magnetic meters have accuracies in the range of
0.5 percent, many Coriolis models achieve an accuracy of
0.1 percent. The Coriolis meter’s high accuracy, along with
its reliability, has resulted in the rapid growth of this market
during the past five years, as surveys have shown. They also
require little maintenance because, apart from the vibrating
tube, they have no moving parts to wear or degrade.
Technological Improvements ContinueSuppliers have made improvements in Coriolis technology
during the past five years. Many now measure gases better.
Another innovation has been the straight tube Coriolis me-
ter. Until 1994, nearly all Coriolis meters used bent tube me-
ters, but they introduced pressure drop into the system. This
makes it neccessary to speed the
fluid up to its original velocity. This
costs money because it requires
the use of pumps. Bent variet-
ies may also experience build-up
around the pipe curvatures, slow-
ing the fluid and making it more
difficult to meter high-velocity flu-
ids. This can be especially prob-
lematic in sanitary applications.
By contrast, newer straight tube
meters are more accurate and reliable, improving on bent
tube meters’ issues with pressure drop. FC

meters, visit www.flowcoriolis.com.
Endress+Hauser’s Promass F 200 flow meter in a chemical training skid at its Train-ing Center in Reinach, Switzerland
While magnetic flow meters
have accuracies in the
range of 0.5 percent, many
Coriolis models achieve an
accuracy of 0.1 percent.

DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE
Differential Pressure Primary Elements Developed Through Innovation
Differential pressure (DP)
flow meters consist of two
elements: a DP flow trans-
mitter and a primary element. The
primary element places a constric-
tion in the flow stream to create a
pressure drop. Pressure taps are
placed upstream and downstream
from the primary element. The DP
transmitter then computes flow by
making use of Bernoulli’s theorem,
which is based on the difference
between upstream and down-
stream pressure.
One disadvantage of this type of
meter is that it must create pres-
sure drop to compute the flow rate.
Many different types of primary el-
ements create varying amounts of
pressure drop. The most common
is the orifice plate, which is usually a metal round plate that
contains one or more round holes.
In 1896, Max Gehre received one of the first patents
on orifice meters. The first commercial orifice plate meter
appeared in 1909 and was used to measure steam flow.
Shortly thereafter, the oil and gas industry began using ori-
fice plate meters because of their ease of standardization
and low maintenance. In 1912, Thomas Weymouth of the
United Natural Gas Company
performed experimental work on
the use of orifice meters to mea-
sure natural gas. Weymouth used
pressure taps located 1 inch up-
stream and 1 inch downstream
of a square-edged orifice. The
Foxboro Company licensed Wey-
mouth’s work and used it as a
basis for building orifice meters shortly after this time.
The increased use of orifice meters captured the attention
of several engineering organizations, and the National Bureau
of Standards became involved in this research. In 1930, a
joint test program generated a coefficient prediction equa-
tion based on extensive tests. That year, the American Gas
Association issued AGA-1, a report on the use of differential
pressure meters with orifice plates for custody transfer mea-
surement.
Other types of primary elements such as Venturi tubes,
flow nozzles, Pitot tubes and wedge elements also play unique
roles. Since Venturi tubes do not have a sharp edge, they are
especially useful for measuring the flow of any fluid contain-
ing suspended solids. Flow nozzles resemble Venturis but are
shorter. They are used to measure flow in applications where
erosion or cavitation could damage an orifice plate. Single-
port and averaging Pitot tubes are often used to measure the
flow of air and to measure the flow of stack gas and exhaust
emissions.
Another primary element, the cone type, has recently
evolved through substantial product
development. McCrometer origi-
nally developed and introduced the
cone meter in 1987 under the trade
name V-Cone. The V-shaped cone
meter consists of a cone-shaped el-
ement inserted inside a larger tube,
which is placed inside a pipe. The
cone has a hole in the portion that
faces the flowing fluid. The fluid enters the inside of the cone,
creating a pressure drop. Pressure taps are located upstream
from the cone and also inside the cone itself. Flow rate is then
computed using Bernoulli’s theorem. The chief advantage of
the cone primary element is that it requires very little up-
stream pipe run so it can be used close to elbows and in tight
spaces such as oil platforms. Cone meters are often sold as
standalone items without a transmitter, though they require a
DP flow transmitter for proper operation. FC

Magnetic Meters Boast Liner Variety & Improved Technology
The magnetic flow meter market is one
of the largest among flow meters,
namely because of the large installed
base of magmeters worldwide. They were first
introduced for commercial use in 1952, years
before Coriolis (1977), ultrasonic (1963) and
vortex (1969). Because they were introduced
so early, these meters have had more time to
penetrate markets in Europe, North America
and Asia.
Liners Available in Many Different TypesOne growth factor for magnetic meters is the
availability of many types of liners, including
dominant liners such as PFA, PTFE and hard
rubber. These liners increase the durability
and reliability of magnetic flow meters and
make it possible to use them with almost
any type of liquid. No other flow meter that
measures liquids has such versatility when it
comes to the material in the flow meter that
makes contact with the liquid.
The variety of liner types also makes these meters es-
pecially attractive for the pharmaceutical, food & beverage
and chemical industries, which often require sanitary linings.
Some caustic chemicals require
highly durable linings that can with-
stand contact with these types of
liquids. Magnetic flow meters are
also very popular in the water and
wastewater industry, where they
can handle both clean and dirty wa-
ter applications.
Companies Improving Magnetic Flow Meter TechnologyAlthough magnetic meters boast strong applications for
liquids, they cannot measure nonconductive liquids, barring
their use in the oil & gas and refining industries without an
unforeseen technological breakthrough. However, suppliers
have succeeded in reducing the amount of conductivity
required to measure flow with a magnetic meter. To do so,
they have boosted the amount of power used to excite the
magnetic coils, creating a stronger signal. By pushing back
the boundaries of conductivity, suppliers are making mag-
netic meters usable in a broader range of applications.
Other technological advances are developing related to
electrical currents. Magnetic flow meters generate a mag-
netic field when AC or DC electric current passes through
wound wire coils contained within the magmeter. As a re-
sult, its classification as AC or DC refers to the current in
the coils, not necessarily the type of current that powers the
meter. When the meters were first
introduced, they were primarily AC.
Because of noise and additional
voltages that may be present in
the environment of the meter,
these meters need to be zero-
calibrated. To do this properly, the
meter needs to be full of process
fluid and at a no-flow condition.
Some users had difficulty with this
calibration process, and as a result, they found unsatisfactory
results from their magnetic meters.
Partially because of the noise and calibration issues with
AC types, suppliers introduced pulsed DC meters that do not
require zero calibration and handle noise better. Still, AC mag-
netic meters are far from an outmoded technology. In reality,
AC varieties are better able to handle certain types of dif-
ficult applications that include slurries and liquids with solids
content. DC meters, on the other hand, excel with cleaner
liquids. FC

netic meters, visit www.flowmags.com.

MASS FLOW CONTROLLERS
Mass Flow Controllers Can Replace Manual Systems
As their name suggests, mass flow
controllers (MFCs) measure and
control mass flow. Their control
valve can open and close to allow or stop
flow. With its bypass design, some of the
fluid is diverted to pass through a small
capillary tube. The diverted flow is mea-
sured, usually with thermal principles, and
used to compute the total mass flow. By
contrast, a mass flow meter has a bypass
for measurement purposes and does not
have a control valve, so it can measure
the flow but not control it.
The semiconductor market accounts
for the majority of MFCs shipped world-
wide. The market’s cycles last between
12 and 18 months and typically experi-
ence more economic ups and downs than
typical process industry markets. It has,
however, recovered since the economic
downturn in 2009 and 2010.
The Use of MFCs Is Expanding in Industrial MarketsSome industrial markets, such as automo-
tive and aerospace, are now weak because of high energy
costs. Others, such as emissions monitoring and biotech/phar-
maceutical, are thriving with environmental regulations and
upgrades in manufacturing processes, and a need for alterna-
tive energy sources will drive additional research and develop-
ment in the foreseeable future. MFCs will benefit from these
industrial segments because they
are used to measure and control
gas flows in these segments. Fuel
cells represent another area of
growth for MFCs.
MFCs Are Replacing Manual SystemsThe trend today is toward the
automation provided by MFCs
and away from the lower accuracy of variable area flow
meters, which also measure and control gas flow. While
some variable area meters have been developed with an
output signal, the majority need to be read manually, and the
needle valve is adjusted manually.
Economic growth in China, India and other emerging
markets should continue with an increase in population and
demand growth in industrial segments including energy con-
sumption, food and beverage, automotive, and power. De-
mand for computers and semiconductor products will also
grow in China and India, causing an increasing use of MFCs
during the next several years.
Mergers & Acquisitions in the MFC Market Mergers and acquisitions in
the past eight years have been
frequent in the MFC market.
Brooks Instrument acquired
Celerity in 2009, and Hitachi
Metals acquired the Japanese
MFC line AERA from Advanced
Energy in 2010. While both
acquisitions may be positive for
the market in the long run, the
first impact is sales when product lines are consolidated and
other redundant business factors are eliminated. Brooks was
sold by American Industrial Partners to Illinois Tool Works
in January 2012. Before that, Brooks was sold by Emerson
Electric to American Industrial Partners in December 2007. FC

MULTIPHASE
Multiphase Meter Development Prominent Around the North Sea
Multiphase flow meters are
used in oil and gas produc-
tion to determine the mixture
and amount of oil, gas and water as
it comes out of the well. In the past,
this measurement could only be made
after the fluids were separated. Multi-
phase flow measurement began when
the prospective decline in produc-
tion of the North Sea oil fields made
it necessary to find a way to analyze
the increasing amounts of gas and wa-
ter that were coming out of the wells.
Multiphase meters were developed out
of this research. The information they
collect also helps diagnose the condi-
tion of the well. For example, they can
detect that a well that begins to output
a greater percentage of water might be
in a declining state.
Much research still takes place in
areas near the North Sea. Much of
the development for new products and
theories is performed around the world. Norway has become
a center for these flow meters with Christian Michelsen Re-
search (CMR) in Bergen. From 1982 to 1985 CMR created
the Fluenta flare gas meter, and in 1985, it founded Fluenta,
a manufacturer of ultrasonic flow meters for flare gas mea-
surement. Its research sought to better diagnose the cause of
the output decline in wells in the North Sea. Today a number
of other multiphase companies call Norway home.
Another development hot
spot on the North Sea, the UK
is home to a number of multi-
phase companies. One com-
pany, TUV SUD National Engi-
neering Laboratories (NEL) in
Glasgow, Scotland, is responsi-
ble for flow measurement within
the UK’s National Measurement
System. It also provides technical consulting, research, test-
ing, flow measurement and program management services.
TUV SUD’s recent research has provided major support for
multiphase and wet gas metering as well as traditional mea-
surement techniques such as orifice plates.
Developments WorldwideIn October 2015, Tønsberg, Norway hosted the 33rd annual
North Sea Flow Measurement Workshop, which focused on
multiphase and wet gas meters. More than 180 attend-
ees gathered to learn more on topics such as magnetic
resonance multiphase flow, wet natural gas flow, flow meter
calibration and ultrasonic flow meters in wet gas applica-
tions. Participating companies included Roxar, One Subsea,
Abbon, GE Measurement & Control, Cameron, Solartron ISA,
Christian Michelsen Research and SICK.
Also in August 2015, Schlumberger acquired Cameron and
together became One Subsea.
The new company markets the
PhaseWatcher Subsea Multiphase
Meter, which was originally devel-
oped by Framo Engineering before
Schlumberger acquired it in 2011.
Users can expect to see more
research and development on
multiphase meters despite their
complexity. Many companies are trying to reduce the meter’s
cost, which can exceed $500,000, and find more effective
ways to determine the relative fluid mixture of wells. Wet gas
flow measurement is also increasingly important, especially for
subsea wells. Both Coriolis and Venturi meters are commonly
used in multiphase meters, sometimes in combination. FC
For more information about Flow Research’s work on multi-
phase meters, visit www.flowmultiphase.com.

POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT
24 | December 2014 Flow Control Magazine
Positive Displacement Meters Hold Their Place in Utility Measurement
Positive displacement (PD) meters
are the workhorses of today’s flow
meter world. They perform impor-
tant flow measurements that many peo-
ple take for granted, such as billing for
water and gas in residential, commercial
and industrial applications. Most likely a
PD meter also measures how much wa-
ter you use at your house. Even though
they face stiff competition from new
meters in some segments, PD meters
remain the best solution for certain ap-
plications, particularly low-flow rate and
high-viscosity liquids.
PD meters separate the fluid to be
measured into distinct compartments of
known volume. The flow rate is calculated
based on the number of times these com-
partments are filled and emptied as liquid
or gas passes through during a period of
time. Models differ by the shape and size
of their compartments and whether they are designed for liq-
uids or gases.
Utility Measurement StrengthPD meters make low-cost mechanical measurements for util-
ity purposes. In these segments, the main competition for PD
meters is single jet, multi-jet, compound and Woltman turbine
meters. The reason is that
industry approvals for new-
technology meters, such as
magnetic and Coriolis, are at
least several years away.
PD meters for gas appli-
cations also face competi-
tion from turbine flow me-
ters. However, PD meters
are primarily used for smaller
pipe sizes, and most PD
meters for gas applications
measure between 1½ inches and 10 inches. Turbine meters,
by contrast, perform best with steady, high-volume flows. For
this reason, turbine meters are more likely to be used for pipe
sizes above 10 inches. This is also the range in which ultra-
sonic meters excel. While ultrasonic, turbine and PD meters
overlap in the 4- to 10-inch size range, PD meters still have
an advantage in the smaller sizes. Low flowrates are not a
barrier for PD meters, so they will continue to be used in the
smaller line sizes to measure gas flow.
Product ImprovementsPositive displacement sales are bolstered by new applications
in the oil and gas industry, cryogenics and ultra pure water
processing. Suppliers who support the aerospace industry are
reporting an uptick in government spending for the military
and for civilian and government aircraft flight applications.
Some relatively new developments focus on improved
methods to increase man-
ufacturing precision. For
example, improved coordi-
nate measuring machines
enable the creation of more
perfectly round pistons and
other components. As is the
case with turbine meters,
improved bearing technol-
ogy is also making ball bear-
ings more reliable and less
prone to failure.
In the area of oil flow measurement, PD meters face a stiff
challenge from Coriolis meters. Because oil is a high-value
product, end users are more willing to pay the higher prices of
Coriolis meters to measure its flow. PD meters are widely used
to measure the flow of hydrocarbon products both upstream
and downstream of refineries at custody transfer points. FC

displacement flow meters, visit www.flowpd.com.

Even though they face stiff com-
petition from new meters in some
segments, PD meters remain the
best solution for certain applica-
tions, particularly low-flow rates
and high-viscosity liquids.

THERMAL
New Thermal Meters Developed for Environmental Markets
Like the Coriolis flow meter,
thermal meters measure
mass flow, but their method
is different. Instead of using fluid
momentum, thermal meters use
the thermal or heat conducting
properties of fluids. Most measure
gas flow, but some also measure
liquid flow.
Some thermal meter technolo-
gies measure the speed at which
heat added to the flow stream dis-
perses, while others measure the
temperature difference between
a heated sensor and the ambient
flow stream. The meters typically
require one or more temperature
sensors to measure the fluid tem-
perature at specific points.
Industrial thermal meters use
a concept similar to hot wire an-
emometers. The small, fragile an-
emometers are used in velocity
profile and turbulence research
and are susceptible to breakage
and to contamination from dirt.
By contrast, the industrial thermal
meters use rugged sensors that are better adapted to indus-
trial environments while still measuring the speed of heat dis-
sipation to determine mass flow.
Advantages & DisadvantagesThermal flow meters’ niche
comes from their relatively low
purchase price along with their
ability to measure the flow of
some low-pressure gases that
are not dense enough for Coriolis
meters to measure. However,
they only offer low to medium
accuracy. Some can achieve
accuracy levels of 1 percent, but
others are in the 3 to 5 percent range.
While thermal meters can uniquely support many gas flow
applications, including process gas and other non-custody
transfer applications, they are limited in their application for
liquids and are not a good fit for steam flow measurement.
The meters also do not have the necessary industry approv-
als for use with custody-transfer of natural gas in pipelines.
This market is dominated by ultra-
sonic, turbine and differential pres-
sure flow meters, all of which have
custody-transfer approvals from
the American Gas Association.
Thermal meters are unlikely to get
this approval without technological
breakthroughs.
The Development of Multipoint Thermal Meters In response to new environmental
requirements in recent decades,
thermal meter companies devel-
oped multipoint thermal flow meters.
For example, the Environmental
Protection Agency has initiated a
program to reduce pollution in the
atmosphere, paving the way for
a new industry around continu-
ous emission monitoring systems
(CEMs). For CEM in large stacks
emitting pollution from industrial
sources, multipoint thermal flow
meters measure gas flow at up to
16 points and use these values to
compute flow for the entire pipe, duct or stack. Single-point
thermal meters measure flow at one point, making it difficult to
accurately compute flow in a large pipe or smokestack.
Today thermal flow meters compete with ultrasonic and dif-
ferential pressure flow meters using averaging Pitot tubes for
flue gas monitoring. Thermal flow
meters measure the flow of gas-
es through flues, including large
pipes, stacks, ducts or chimneys
that dispose of gases created by
a combustion process.
Thermal meters also com-
pete in the same markets for
flare gas monitoring systems
that burn waste gases from re-
fineries, process plants and power plants. Thermal flow me-
ters measure the amount of gas flared in either a single pipe
or network of pipes. These too are subject to environmental
regulations. FC

mal flow measurement, visit www.flowvolumex.com.
Thermal flow meters can
uniquely support many gas
flow applications, including
process gas and other non-
custody transfer applications.

Turbine Meters Become More Efficient & Reliable
Even though the earliest turbine flow me-
ter was invented before positive displace-
ment (PD) flow meters came into use,
the history of turbine flow meter use does not
go back as far as that of PD meters. PD me-
ters were first used for gas applications in the
early 1800s, while Reinhard Woltman invented
the first turbine meter in 1790. Even so, it was
not until the early 1940s that turbine meters
were first used for fuel measurement, in part
because fuel use on military planes in World
War II needed to be measured. Soon afterward,
turbine meters were used in the petroleum in-
dustry to measure the flow of hydrocarbons.
The history of using turbine meters to
measure gas flow dates back to 1953. Rock-
well introduced a turbine meter to the gas in-
dustry in 1963, but it took about 10 years for
it to become widely accepted by the industry.
In 1981 the American Gas Association (AGA)
published its Report #7, “Measurement of
Fuel Gas by Turbine Meters.”
Suppliers Developing Better Performing Turbine MetersTurbine meter suppliers are now developing features to make
them more efficient and reliable. For example, new ceramic
and sapphire ball bearings now last longer than other bear-
ings. Another development is a dual-rotor turbine meter that
extends the flow range and provides higher measurement
accuracy, and also reduces the effects of swirl on flow mea-
surement. Elster has developed a turbine meter that offers
bi-directional flow.
Another research development, a new sensor design, will
potentially reduce the pressure drop in turbine flow measure-
ment. It could also provide enhanced
accuracy and reduced susceptibility
for particles in the flow stream. While
this design is still in the development
phase, it has the potential to impact
the turbine meter market over time.
Industry ApprovalsApproval organizations specify approv-
als for turbine meter use in custody transfer for utility measure-
ment in residential, commercial and industrial applications.
These organizations include AGA, the American Water Works
Association and the International Standards Organization in
Europe.
AGA’s approval of a standard for using turbine meters for
natural gas custody transfer has increased their use. While
turbine meters have enjoyed an advantage in the past based
on their approvals, this advantage is diminishing as new-tech-
nology flow meters are approved for custody transfer of natu-
ral gas. Now turbine meters face competition from ultrasonic
meters, and the report on the use of Coriolis flow meters has
also been approved by AGA (Report #11).
Installed Base Gives Turbine Meters an EdgeOne major growth factor for turbine flow meters is their large
established base worldwide. Because they have been around
longer than new-technology meters, they have had more time
to penetrate the markets in Europe,
North America and Asia, and when
ordering flow meters, especially for
replacement purposes, users often
replace like with like. An investment
in a flow meter technology includes
not just the cost of the meter, but
also training in its installation and
use. Some companies stock spare
parts or even spare meters for replacement purposes. This
fuels the growth of the existing turbine meter market. FC

meters, visit www.flowturbine.com.

Ultrasonic Meter Market Expands with Natural Gas Flow
The ultrasonic flow meter market
is smaller than some competing
technologies. Looking at revenue,
it is more than half the size of the mag-
netic flow meter market worldwide and is
substantially smaller than the differential
pressure and Coriolis meter markets. On
the other hand, the ultrasonic flow me-
ter market is larger than the vortex meter
market. What does this mean for future
growth?
Ultrasonic meters have a distinct ad-
vantage when compared to other new-
technology meters. They perform well in
large pipe sizes, especially those 6 inch-
es and larger. More than half the Corio-
lis meters are sold for 2-inch or smaller
pipes. They also become unwieldy and
expensive in sizes greater than 4 inches.
Size is also advantageous for ultrasonic meters since larger
pipes have more room for the ultrasonic signal to cross.
Although some Coriolis suppliers have been building me-
ters for pipe sizes as large as 16 inches, ultrasonic meters
still have an edge regarding size since many are used for cus-
tody transfer of natural gas in sizes 12 to 42 inches and up.
Coriolis suppliers have not figured out how to make Coriolis
meters for such large pipe sizes.
Gas Flow MeasurementThe main competitors for ultrasonic meters for natural gas
pipeline applications in this large size range are turbine
and differential pressure (DP)
meters. Ultrasonic meters are
highly accurate, non-intrusive
and highly reliable over time with
no moving parts. DP and turbine
meters have an advantage in
installed base, since they have
been in use for so long. Today
many companies are now opting
for ultrasonic meters instead,
especially for new projects.
The expanding market for gas flow measurement is bring-
ing about strong projected growth in the ultrasonic flow meter
market. The market for natural gas flow is expected to show
the strongest growth over process gas and flare gas, and it
uses multipath ultrasonic flow meters for custody transfer. Ul-
trasonic meters are also now being more widely used in the
chemical and refining industries to measure process gases.
These meters off an alternative to magnetic meters that can-
not meter nonconductive liquids or the flow of gas. Insertion
ultrasonic meters will continue to be used to meter flare gas,
where they are used in large pipes.
More Calibration Facilities AvailableOne of the barriers to the use of ultrasonic flow meters to
measure natural gas flow has been the issue of meter re-
calibration. Until 1999, there was no easily available natural
gas calibration facility in the U.S. Users wishing to have their
meters calibrated had to, in many cases, send them to Europe.
In 1999, Colorado Enginnering Experimental Station Inc.
(CEESI) opened its calibration facil-
ity in Iowa. This facility can calibrate
large meters in the 30- to 36-inch
range, as well as smaller meters.
Other facilities have opened
since. TransCanada Calibrations has
serviced those in Canada and parts
of the northern U.S. since 2000.
Southwest Research Institute (SWRI)
in Austin, Texas, can perform calibra-
tions, although they cannot easily do
so for ultrasonic meters larger than 16 inches. In Europe, NMi
Euroloop, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, services industrial oil
and gas meters. It is operated by the Netherlands Metrological
Institute, while VSL handles traceability. FC

The expanding market for
gas flow measurement is
bringing about strong pro-
jected growth in the ultra-
sonic flow meter market.

Multivariable & Dual-Sensor Technologies Offered in Vortex Meters
Vortex flow meters are mea-
suring an increasing number
of variables. While traditional
single-variable vortex meters mea-
sure volumetric flow, newer multivari-
able meters include pressure and/
or temperature sensors to measure
mass flow. Sierra Instruments intro-
duced the first multivariable vortex
flow meter in 1997 with a resistance
temperature detector (RTD) and a
pressure transducer with a vortex
shedding flow meter. By using the
information from these sensors, the
meter can determine volumetric flow,
temperature, pressure, fluid density
and mass flow. This meter is one of a
growing number of multivariable new-
technology flow meters, including
magnetic, differential pressure (DP)
and ultrasonic meters.
While multivariable flow meters
are more expensive, they enable us-
ers to obtain significantly more infor-
mation about the process than a less
expensive single-variable meter. This
information can increase efficiencies and more than make up
for the additional cost. The more complex varieties can also
measure mass flow, which is especially useful for steam and
gas flow measurement.
In addition to process fluid flow, multivariable vortex me-
ters have one of the following sen-
sor configurations:
Integrated temperature
sensor; no pressure sensor
Integrated temperature and
pressure sensors
Integrated pressure sensor;
no temperature sensor
About two-thirds of vortex mul-
tivariable vortex flow meters are
shipped with an integrated tem-
perature sensor but with no pres-
sure sensor.
In November 2015, Sierra Instruments introduced what
it calls the “next generation” of vortex meters. These meters
are specifically designed for flow energy measurement in
steam, compressed air, natural gas and water applications.
As an update to its original meters released in 1997, new
technology features include a micro-
processor for faster software applica-
tions and a suite of digital communi-
cation protocols for networking and
automation.
Dual-Sensor Vortex Flow MetersAnother recent development in vor-
tex meters is a dual-sensor meter.
When a bluff body generates vortices,
a downstream sensor detects and
counts their quantity. These sensors
are typically ultrasonic, piezoelectric
or capacitive, though piezoelectric
sensors predominate. In another
recent innovation, two sensors down-
stream detect the vortices to provide
redundancy, making the meter more
reliable but not necessarily enhancing
performance.
Additionally, two vortex flow me-
ters have been positioned in the same
process line and calibrated together,
providing redundancy. It is somewhat
like having two ultrasonic meters run-
ning in the same line for custody-transfer applications. This
arrangement does not improve individual meter performance,
but it does make for a more stable and reliable installation.
Vortex meters with dual sensors downstream and dual vor-
tex meters calibrated together today each account for a small
percent of the vortex meters
shipped. However, the market
for both configuration types
can be expected to grow at an
above-average rate over the
next several years. As more
end-users become familiar
with the redundancy that both
designs offer, their popularity
can be expected to increase.
Vortex meters measure
steam, gases and liquids with
equal ease, tolerating high temperatures in measuring satu-
rated and superheated steam. In steam flow, their main com-
petitor is DP meters. FC
For more information about Flow Research’s work in the area
of vortex meters, visit www.flowvortex.com.
Sierra Instruments recently introduced the next generation series of its orginigal vor-tex flow meter, the InnovaMass 240i/241i, for gas, liquid and steam measurement.
While multivariable flow meters
are more expensive, they enable
users to obtain significantly
more information about the
process than a less expensive
single-variable meter....
