Help! I can’t do this by myself! What was it the teacher said???

This input can be paused, rewinded (re-read), and fast-forwarded for student differentiation.

In the flipped classroom, “what the teacher says” can be an online video, a podcast, a song, a reading from a book, etc.

Any kind of input!

I really got the content last

night/this morning/at the basketball game! Now we can work on

cool stuff!

“What is the best use of my face-to-face class time?”

– Jonathan Bergmann

By Jonathan Bergmann

Well, instead of calling it the flipped class, I now think of it as flipped learning. All this said and I think there are a few key unifying themes of flipped learning:

Flipped Learning transfers the ownership of the learning to the students.

Flipped Learning personalizes learning for all students Flipped Learning gives teachers time to explore deeper learning

opportunities and pedagogies with their students (PBL, CBL, UDL, Mastery, Inquiry, etc) Flipped Learning makes learning (not teaching) the center of the

classroom. Flipped Learning maximizes the face to face time in the classroom.

By Jonathan Bergmann

So what is

Flipped Mastery?

Allow students to move at their own pace.

Allow students to be assessed at their own pace.

Allow students to design experiences and assessments that demonstrate their mastery of the content.

FLIP TIPSFocus on the in-class awesomeness that you can help create.

TIPSBackwards design. Decide outcomes. Then plan backwards.

TIPSA great LMS can help.

….more on LMS’s to come!

TIPSEase into it.

TIPSGo ahead. Lose control.

TIPSDon’t introduce Quia and Quizlet at the same time.

TIPSReflect before you ask students to upload their Animoto to their Edmodo.

TIPSCreate resources to help students succeed.

For my eyes only

Tric

ksGoogle Forms can now feature aYouTube video embeddedwithin an embeddableGoogle form.

Tric

ksCreate a Google Form at the beginning of the year to ask students for their email addresses, phone numbers, ability to text, free data, technology access, etc.

Ask for parent/guardian emails and phone numbers too!

Tric

ksStudents have computers but no Internet access?

-Flash Drive with videos-DVD for computer/TV

Tric

ks Any?

SuccessesI can group students who are working on the same content.

SuccessesI can work one-on-one with students who need more assistance.

SuccessesStudents are taking responsibility for their own learning.

SuccessesStudents are learning to manage their time.

PitfallsNot enough prep

More focus on videos than in-class activities

It’s more work than lecture

PitfallsMake sure your school’s Internet filtering does not impede you.

PitfallsMake sure you try out tech tools as students would encounter them.

PitfallsMake sure you give students many ways in which to accomplish their work.

This is not a sales pitch. I do not receive anything for my promotion of this product.

Camtasia for Mac was a great buy for me (make sure to find the “Education Pricing.” Lots of bells and whistles. Lots of TechSmith tutorials. There is a free 30-day Trial.

Many “Flippers” say that Camtasia has enhanced their ability to create successful videos and screencast.
