FlexLink conveyor Series Y
4 Introduction
IntroductionNew conveyor with focus on hygieneThe new FlexLink hygiene conveyor was designed to meet the following requirements of special interest to the dairy, food, and personal products industries:
Hygiene
• Open design facilitates cleaning by means of foam fol-lowed by water rinsing.
• Only food approved materials in touch with food
• No harmful gases or smells created.
Environment
• Operating temperatures –20 °C to +60 °C
• Operating humidity 10% to 95% RH
• Noise level at 70 m/min is 70 dBA or less
Safety
• Designed to high standards of safety.
Speed
• The new conveyor is designed for speeds ranging from 5 m/min to 100 m/min.
Open beam structure for easy cleaning.
Building block design 5
Building block design
Proven basic designThe new conveyor system is designed around the classic FlexLink XM 83 mm chain. The chain travels along stain-less steel conveyor beams. The system contains a number of basic building blocks, which are connected using simple hand tools. No welding is required. The fol-lowing building blocks are available to build a hygienic conveyor.
Beam
Conveyor beam (consists of top and bottom part). Slide rail type is PE for speeds up to 30 m/min, UHMW-PE for higher speeds. A fixture can be ordered for precision-cut-ting and drilling of the beam. The beam also incorporates clamps holding the two parts together.
Chain
Low friction conveyor chain. Well suited for accumulation without product wear.
Bends
• Wheel bends, 45° to 180°, radius 160 mm
• Plain bends, 7° to 90°, radius 500/1000 mm
• Vertical bends, 5°, 7°, and 15°, radius 1000 mm. Available in positive and negative angle versions.
Drive units and idlers
Drive units and idlers in several versions. Maintenance free up to 50 000 km of chain travel. Available with or without mechanical and electrical overload protection. Fixed and variable speed motors to be ordered sepa-rately.
Guidance
Guidance components from FlexLink standard assort-ment (plastic/stainless steel).
Conveyor support
Support components in stainless steel, consisting of tubular legs, beam support brackets, and motor support brackets. Feet from FlexLink standard assortment of plastic feet.
6 Conveyor chain
Conveyor chain
Plain chain – 83 mm wideThe Series Y stainless steel conveyor uses standard FlexLink XM chain.
Standard
Standard plain chain is suitable for application with or without moderate accumulation. The plain chain has low friction, eliminating the need for lubrication in most cases. Its design is well suited for cleaning.
Plastic pivot and stainless steel pinThe chain links are connected by means of plastic pivots and stainless steel pins. Pivots and pins are included with chain and link deliveries, so they need only be ordered for replacement purposes.
Chain assembly toolA special pin insertion tool is available for use when assembling and dismantling the chain. The tool helps when inserting and removing the stainless steel pin join-ing two chain links together.
Chain lubricationThe chain is lubrication-free. A new chain running on new slide rails, however, will need a few hours of running-in before it runs perfectly smoothly. For applications where absolutely smooth running is essential from the start, a silicone-based lubricant (LDSS 450) is available.
Technical specificationsChain weight, plain chain ............................. 1,2 kg/mTensile strength at 20°C............................... 6000 NPermissible working tension at 20 °C .......... 1250 NHardness, HRB......................................................... 120Water absorption after 24 h at 20 °C ........... 0,2%
Ordering informationThe chain comes in 5 m lengths. Separate links can also be ordered. Plastic pivots and steel pins are included with chain deliveries, so they need only be ordered for replacement purposes.
Calculate the required length of chain. For effective track lengths of bends, drive units etc., see each compo-nent description. The chain must be ordered in 5 m sec-tions.

6 Conveyor beam
Conveyor beam
Beam section designThe beam design is both safe and hygienic, with self-draining surfaces, and the return chain protected from any debris from above.
The conveyor beams are delivered fully assembled in a series of standard lengths up to 2980 mm. Customer specified lengths (L version) can also be delivered. Each section consists of several parts:
• Top profile pair (stainless steel) carrying the chain
• Return beam profile which encloses the return chain
• Clamps (reinforced PA) keeping the top and bottom profiles together at regular intervals (normally 500 mm, max. 250 mm from beam ends). These clamps also serve as anchor points for guide rail brackets and beam support brackets.
• Safety tube for finger protection (Fig. A).
Connecting brackets (Fig. B) and return beam profile connectors are required for connecting two conveyor beams. Connecting bracket kits and safety tube for beam section ends must be ordered separately.
Beam cutting
If beam lengths need to be trimmed, it is necessary to use a drill/cut fixture type 5055915. Please contact Flex-Link for more information.
Accessory bracket
Brackets for accessories (Fig. C) can be installed along the beam. The bracket has a threaded hole (M8) and is suitable for attachment of guide rail brackets, cable chan-nels, and light accessories such as sensors. One acces-sory bracket must always be used in combination with beam support bracket Type 1 (see page 1).
Slide railPlastic slide rail is used to provide a low-friction track for the chain on the top side of the beam. The material used is PE or UHMW-PE. The slide rail is anchored using blind rivets in stainless steel.
Ordering information
1 Determine the required number of straight sections. If possible, use standard lengths. Custom lengths are available if standard lengths are not suitable.
2 Connecting bracket kits: One connecting bracket kit is needed for each joint between straight beams. The kit includes return beam profile connector and screws. (Drive units, transfer unit, idlers, and bends include connecting brackets.)
3 Slide rail: Two lengths of slide rail are normally required for each length of beam. No slide rail is needed for the bottom track of the beams.
4 Safety tube pieces at beam ends must be ordered separately.
At joints between two straight sections, calculate the required tube length as follows:
C1(section 1) + C1(section 2) – 46 (C1: see page 1)
At joints from straight section to drive unit or bend (also order end plugs for the open end of the tube):
C1 – 13
5 Blind rivets needed to anchor the slide rail: Two rivets are normally required for each separate piece of slide rail. For continuously wet applications, please contact FlexLink.
6 Cover kits should be ordered for beam clamps that are not used to support guide rail brackets.

End drive units and idlers
End drive unitThe end drive unit for Series Y conveyors is specially made for washable applications. It features stainless steel ball bearings, side plates, motor brackets and retaining rings. The other parts have received special surface treatment or are made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic. Drive units can be delivered with or without motor.
The end drive unit comes in two versions: with or without provisions for a safety clutch. The clutch version is equipped with a flange. The unit can also be delivered for direct drive without safety clutch. In addition to the fixed speed motors, drive units with variable speed con-trol (5–100 m/min) are also available. Please contact FlexLink for more information.
The drive unit is available with the motor located on the left-hand or right-hand side.
Guide wheel kit (only for use with plain chain)
A guide wheel kit is available. It is used primarily for drive units running at speeds above 30 m/min. The guide wheel is used to guide the return chain smoothly out from the drive unit and reduce the noise level. The wheel (dashed lines in the drive unit drawings) can only be used with plain chain.
Motor connect kits 1 and 2
Motor connect kits are available in two versions, for drive units with slip clutch and for drive units without slip clutch. Both kits are for SEW SA37 motors. Motor support brack-ets (see page 27) are not included in the kits.
1 The drive unit with slip clutch is connected to the motor by means of a motor support plate. This arrangement facilitates removal of the motor without simultaneously removing the corresponding support leg from the conveyor. The motor support plate is delivered in a kit together with drive shaft and the nec-essary mounting hardware.
2 For drive units without slip clutch, the corresponding kit consists of a key for the drive shaft, a torque arm, and the necessary mounting hardware.
Idler unitAn idler unit contains a free wheel which incorporates stainless steel ball bearings. The purpose of the idler unit is to change the direction of the chain with a minimum amount of friction.
In an idler unit the chain is guided by flanges to pre-vent it from disengaging underneath.
Transfer unitA combination of end drive unit and idler unit is available as a separate product. It can be used as an intermediate drive unit in closed loop conveyors. See page 14.
NoteSEW accessory kit. For use with Motor connect kit Type 1 or 2 when used with SEW motors. Included in the motor delivery.
Ordering informationThe photo and drawings show drive units without motors (0-units). Drive units with SEW SA37 motors and slip clutches (optional) can be ordered. Please contact Flex-Link for more information.
The 0-unit for use with a slip clutch includes a flange. The slip clutch (standard or stainless steel) must be ordered separately.
Drive units and idler units incorporate connecting brackets for connection to the conveyor beam. Mounting hardware is also supplied with the units. Slide rail must be ordered for the top part of the chain track.
Special support brackets are available for the drive units. Two types of brackets are used, Type 1 for drive units with slip clutches and Type 2 for drive units without slip clutches. The support brackets are used together with support connectors to connect the drive unit to a support leg. See page 27 for more information.

Horizontal wheel bends 17
Horizontal wheel bends
Wheels minimize friction in bendsHorizontal wheel bends are used to provide a horizontal change of direction in the conveyor with a minimum amount of friction. The wheel bend is designed to guide the chain in the return track as well as the top track. Each wheel is supported by sealed bearings for long life and a minimum amount of friction. The wheel bend is available in three versions, with 45°, 90°, or 180° change of direc-tion.
A guide disc can be placed on top of the wheel. The guide disc must be ordered separately. See “Guide rail system”, page 23, for more information.
The length of some products prohibits the use of, for example, one 90° wheel bend. In such cases the change of direction can be distributed between two 45° wheel bends. The illustrations show the space requirements when several wheel bends are combined.
Support bracketBeam support bracket Type 1 (see page 29) can be used to support a wheel bend at the joint to a straight beam section. One lug is connected to the beam clamp, and the other to the wheel bend. See photo. Note that the centre of the beam clamp must be placed 52 mm from the beam end. The minimum straight beam length is 104 mm.
Ordering informationWhen calculating the required amount of slide rail, note that slide rail need only be installed on the upper outer bend.
Connecting brackets are included.

Plain bends for large radiiHorizontal plain bends are used when wheel bends are not suitable. Examples:
• For long products, requiring large-radius turns
• When large-radius bends are desired for other rea-sons
• For twin-track bends.
Important
Use plain bends only when wheel bends cannot be used. Plain bends will increase the tension in the chain and cause higher stress on slide rail. To ensure a reliable con-veyor design using plain bends, consult your FlexLink Systems representative for technical data and design assistance.

Support system 27
Support system
Conveyor support systemThe support system for Series Y conveyors is based on support tubes made of stainless steel. To build a support leg, the following components are needed (see figure):
• Beam support bracket (3 types available: C, D, E) or motor support bracket (2 types available: A, B)
• Support connector (see photo, page 28.)
• Support tube 60 mm F (delivered in 3 m lengths, or pre-cut to desired length). The beam cutting lengths for a given conveyor height H from floor up to top of chain are shown in the figure.
• Foot G (two types available)
Motor support bracketsThe drive unit motors are supported by motor support brackets connected to support legs. The brackets are designed with a sloping base to prevent cleaning fluids from remaining on the surface. The following types are available:
• Motor support bracket Type 1 (B), for use with drive units with slip clutches. In addition, a motor connect kit Type 1 (5055523) must be ordered for this type of drive unit. See page 13.
• Motor support bracket Type 2 (A) for use with drive units wihout slip clutches. In addition, a motor connect kit Type 2 (5055378) must be ordered for this type of drive unit. See page 13.
A support connector 5055767 is used to connect the brackets to the support tube. One connector and the nec-essary screws for connection to the bracket are delivered as a kit.
Beam support bracketsThe conveyor beams are supported by beam support brackets. The brackets are designed with a 20° sloping base to prevent cleaning fluids from remaining on the surface. The slope should face in the direction of chain travel for maximum safety. The following types are avail-able:
• Type 1 (E) for straight beam sections, offset holes for best longitudinal stability.
Note. The mounting lugs of this beam support brack-ets are offset by 130 mm. One of the lugs can be con-nected to a beam clamp, on one side of the beam. On the other side, an accessory bracket 5054304 (see page 9) is required.
• Type 2 (D) for straight beam sections or plain bends, facing holes for use when offset holes are not suita-ble. The lugs are normally connected to the beam clamps.
• Type 3 (C) for 180° wheel bends
Note that screws, nuts, and washers for connection to the beam or wheel bend must be ordered separately.
A support connector 5055767 is used to connect the brackets to the support tube. One connector and the nec-essary screws for connection to the bracket are delivered as a kit.

Support system (continued)
Support connectorOne support connector must be ordered for each beam support bracket or motor support bracket. The connector incorporates an expanding disc which locks the connec-tor in the tube when the centre screw is tightened. The connector must be connected to the support tube before the bracket is attached to the connector:
1 Insert the support connector into the top end of the support tube.
2 Tighten the screw in the middle of the support con-nector to fix the connector inside the support tube.
3 Attach the beam support bracket to the support con-nector by means of the remaining two screws.
FeetThe support legs fit into two types of foot:
• Three-point polyamide foot (A)
• Two-point polyamide foot (B).
The feet can be used with or without adjustable feet type XCFS 16×60×65.
Ordering information• Cutting lengths for the support profile: see figure on
page 27.
• Screws, nuts, and washers required for connections between beam support brackets and beam must be ordered separately. Please contact FlexLink for more information.
• Note that motor connect kits are required for use with SEW SA37 motors/gearboxes. Please contact Flex-Link for more information.
