FLETCHER S IBTHORP SELECTED WORKS 2011

‘’I have really enjoyed working with Fletcher on several pieces. He understands the lines the dancer is trying to achieve instinctively. He is able to portray those lines, great physicality and movement in his painting.I am very proud to have a painting of me by Fletcher Sibthorp hanging at the RBS, White Lodge.’’

Darcey Bussell CBE former principal ballerina of Royal Ballet

Fletcher Sibthorp has been capturing the essence of dance in his paintings and

drawings for the last seventeen years, starting with his collaboration with Sadler’s Wells

to create a painting for the flamenco troupe Paco Peña.

Further artworks of the world famous Joaquín Cortés and his dance troupe, cemented

his relationship with the world of flamenco, culminating in his first solo show in Japan in

1999. In the decade that followed, the list of flamenco dancers Sibthorp has captured is

like a who’s who of flamenco, including Eva Yerbabuena, Sara Baras and Maria Pages to

name a few.

Most admirers of Sibthorp’s work are first introduced to it via his published prints. To

date he has produced over 100 prints editions, with 28 ‘sold out’ editions to his credit.

2005 saw his first solo exhibition for 13 years at London’s Cork Street and the launch

of his book ‘Passion’. The show was a great success, with many pieces selling and major

works breaking into five figures for the first time.

Amoung the fimiliar flamenco paintings, were a selection of paintings depicting Rambert

Dance Company. Contemporary dance and ballet became the main focus for Sibthorp

the next five years.

In 2006, after becoming runner up the year before, Sibthorp won Fine Art Trade Guilds

Best Selling Artist Award, beating Jack Vettriano.

The Royal Ballet invited him to attend technical and dress rehearsals and through these

an exhibition of artworks was held at Medici Gallery - Cork Street, in 2007. Many famous

names in dance attended the private view- Darcey Bussell, Alina Cojacaru, Ed Watson

and Sarah Lamb were a few of the Principle dancers caught on canvas.

So impressed with the paintings he had produced of her, Darcey Bussell invited him to

attend her last rehearsal of her final performance with The Royal Ballet, Song of the

Earth - the only artist to be offered such a priviledged invitation. Reference gathered at

this rehearsal was used for the painting ‘Darcey in Three Movements’, created especially

at Darcey’s request , to hang in the dance studio named in her honour, at The Royal Ballet

School, Richmond Park. From this artwork a limited edition print was created, signed

by Darcey., a portion of the proceeds of which went to the Royal Ballet School. As an

indication of his dedication to capturing dance, the Royal Ballet School made him Artist

in Residence in 2010 - the first artist to have been given this title.

That year Darcey Bussell again honoured him by choosing Sibthorp to create a portrait

of her for the cruise ship she was made Godmother to, The Azura. This portrait hangs as

part of the permanent display in its Grand Reception Foyer.

Selected Works is a collection of original artwork available for sale, spanning the full time

period of Sibthorp’s dance works. Included in the sale are artworks specially shipped

from Japan and exhibited for the first time in Great Britain.
