Jamaica Awareness Association of California (JAAC)
Jamaica Awareness Association of California (JAAC) is a non-profit, charitable organization founded in Los Angeles in 1987. It is organized and operated exclusively for charitable purposes under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Tax ID # 95-4130314). It is especially dedicated to the advancement of the educational and health systems, as well as to provide assistance to charitable causes in the areas we serve.
Since its inception, JAAC has embarked on various local projects in the Southern California area and we are now looking to expand to the Bay area, in the surrounding communities of Oakland. At these community events we screen anywhere from 100 - 200 persons with the hope of creating an awareness/prevention of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
JAAC conducts an annual medical mission to rural communities in Jamaica each year with a team of physicians, medical professionals and other volunteers. This medical mission includes screenings, laparoscopic surgeries, dental care and health education. We are very proud of the work we are doing and in 2005, we initiated a laparoscopic training program for doctors in hospitals across the island which enhances the delivery of health care throughout the region. This mission has changed the lives of many people, who are overwhelmed and most appreciative of the quality and the aid our team has provided.
Sinkler Miller Medical Association Scholarship Program
Sinkler Miller Medical Association (SMMA) began the annual scholarship program with a benefit dinner in 1983 and will this year on November 16, 2013, hold its 30th Annual Scholarship Dinner benefitting African American medical students, nursing and high school students pursuing their dreams to becoming physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. Over the past 30 years, SMMA and its many partners and sponsors have given almost $1 million dollars in scholarships to African Americans students in the Bay Area.
SMMA was formed in 1969 by physicians located in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties who saw the need to unite and form a professional medical association. Their objectives included the improvement of the quality of health care in the community, advancement of the art as well as the science of medicine, and the maintenance of a high standard of medical ethics. In their early years, SMMA also raised funds to provide scholarships to students and hosted sickle cell anemia camps for youth to increase education and awareness about the disease.
The SMMA was named after two physicians who exemplified these objectives and were deeply committed to the delivery of quality health care to the Black community. Dr. William Sinkler was the first Chief of Surgery and Medical Director of the Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He was one of the first black Diplomates of the American Board of Surgery and trained surgeons throughout the world. Dr. Rudolph Miller, a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology was one of the black pioneers among urologists practicing in the Bay Area and was very active in community affairs.
As an affiliate of both the National Medical Association (NMA) and the State of California Golden State Medical Association, SMMA is committed towards the enhancement of the field of medicine, healthcare, education and awareness.
