FINISHING AND POLISHING OF RESTORATION

FINISHING :Process of removing surface defects or scratches created during the contouring process through the use of cutting or grinding instruments or both.

POLISHING : – Process of providing luster or gloss on a material surface.

Finishing n Polishing Instruments are used to finish and polish dental material surfaces to improve their esthetic quality and the three main materials that these instruments are made up of are:1. Aluminum Oxide2. Silicon Carbide3. Diamond Grit

Grinding & Finishing abrasives & cutting discs provide fast contouring & finishing. They are made up of aluminum oxide, silicon carbide and diamonds.

Aluminium oxide is the preferred choice for composites and enamel.

Diamond Abrasives are more expensive, lasts longer, have a faster working time and provide a mirror finish. These instruments are preferred for porcelain, ceramic, zirconia and metals.

Silicon Carbide is the preferred material for amalgam/ gold polishers and acrylic polishers because it wont cause discoloration. These polishers come in a variety of shapes suitable for these materials.

Just like diamond and carbides, finishing and polishing instruments come in a range of shapes that are suited for certain materials , procedures, or restoration areas. So the choice of instrument and shape will be driven by both the procedure and the dental material to be worked with.

Abrasive grits – Abrasive grits are derived from materials that have been crushed and passed through a series of mesh screens to obtain different particle size ranges.

Dental abrasive grits are classified as – Coarse medium coarse medium fine super fine

Colour coding of burs

FLUTED FINISHING BURSThey are available in 8,12,16,20 30 fluted bur design.

The fewer the flutes, the more aggressive is the cutting .

They are used for finishing composites.

30 fluted burs can be used to smooth, abrade porcelain surfaces before application of diamond polishing pastes .

Several specific group of fluted finishing burs have been developed for finishing of composites known as esthetic trimming burs.

Finishing N Polishing Discs Gross reduction .

Contouring and finishing and polishing of restoration surfaces.

Most discs are coated with aluminum dioxide.

Paper discsMEDIUM discs are used for advanced contouring, establishing marginal ridges & adjusting incisal edges.

FINE discs are used to further improve finish quality & prepare surface for final polishing.
