The Fight Against Poverty

By David Guarin & Jay Roff

Evolution of Poverty Over Time

Poverty came with the origin of society itself.

With the rise of civilizations and the strengthening of social stratifications worsened the issue.

In the last 50 years we have made more progress in this issue than in the past 500 years.

Poverty Today

Poverty today has become more serious and thanks to the ability to spread information so quickly more people are becoming aware.

Most of the world’s poverty is concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia.

The biggest factor today is the staggering amount of children living in poverty.

Education, the spread of disease, corruption, natural disasters, really all of the issues we are learning about add to this issue and make it worse.

5 Countries that face Poverty

Mexico

India

Haiti

Nigeria

Venezuela

How can we address this issue and on what levels? There are many institutions, funds, NGO’s, and individuals fighting to end poverty.

We believe that the best way to fight this is to not only support these programs not only with donations of funds but with our own time and effort.

Spreading the word on this issue and possibly starting other sects of these organizations/initiatives can also help.

CARE, the SEVEN fund, and “True Solutions, Take Action”.

We can leave all of this behind if we make the effort and work together

Discussion QuestionsWhat could YOU possibly do to fight the poverty around YOU?

Do the current government socio-economical programs targeted to fight this issue seem to work in Venezuela? Any other countries?

What do you believe to be the best forms of aid a person in poverty could receive?

After seeing this presentation do you think that we could end poverty or at least reduce greatly some day?

Which nation of the 5 presented here seems to be the worst off? Why?

Reflection Assignment

Your reflection assignment is to choose an article that is concerned with one of the 5 countries we mentioned earlier in our presentation (Mexico, India, Nigeria, Haiti, and Venezuela) and answer the following questions.

- Who is suffering? Why are they suffering? How are they Suffering?

- Are they receiving aid? In what form?

- What are some solutions to the current predicament of these people? Do some of the solutions presented here seem like viable fixes to their suffering?
