Fifth Grade Quilt Project

Fifth Grade Quilt ProjectPractice Drawing Materials

• Image• Drawing paper • Crayons• Colored pencils• Folder• Envelope

• Every student was assigned a square of the image. • Using a variety of drawing materials students reproduced

their square in several sizes.• I asked students to concentrate on the shapes and colors

in their square and because of the type of art used I also asked them to pay attention to the style of brush strokes.

• Remember to allow about a ¼ of an inch border around the drawing for the seams of the quilt.

• Because of the limited palette of the Pastel Dye Sticks I limited the number of colors students could use.

• After my students were satisfied in their drawings I showed them how to use the Pastel Dye Sticks.

• Students then attached their fabric to the freezer paper.

• Some students used a pencil to lightly sketch their portion of the painting.

• I reminded students about the ¼ inch border.

• Students marked the back of the square with the number of the square.

• Students also marked the upper left corner of the square with a small black dot.

• As students completed their square they hung it on my bulletin board.

• After all the squares were completed we began sewing the quilt together.

Fifth Grade Quilt ProjectAfter we sewed the center of the quilt I met with some of my students at the fabric store one Saturday to pick out fabric for the boarders and back of the quilt.

Fifth Grade Quilt ProjectWith the final parts of the quilt chosen students began to complete the quilt. We worked in groups to pin the borders on to the quilt.

After the border was pined I worked with small groups of students to sew it on.

When the quilt was completed it went on display at the Hillsborough County Public Schools Fine Arts Festival.

Every one of my students that visited the quilt during the show was able to pick out their square.

After the Fine Arts Festival the quilt was donated to the Joshua House. I also worked with the PTA of Mary E. Bryant Elementary to collect more bedding for the children living at the Joshua House. We collected more than 20 sets of bedding to donate.
