4 THE MAGAZINE
In the pages of this magazine, we have featured news and accomplishments from our entire community. I hope you see both the past success and the future promise. More than ever, I believe the world needs Fenwick to continue to provide life-changing opportunities that remind each of us what God can accomplish when we cooperate with his grace.
We remain a school committed to opening our doors to everyone who has the ability to thrive here, regardless of their socio-economic status. Financial aid has increased more than 150% in my time as president. We have added resources to make sure that all students are able to thrive academically, spiritually and personally. And we continue to explore the opportunities and challenges facing Fenwick so we remain a premier high school in the United States.
One final thought – Fenwick is a dynamic institution and growing and changing every year. If it has been a while since you have been at Fenwick, please come by to visit. We would love to show you the facilities and introduce you to the people that make us all so proud to be connected with this great school.
So, remember: Fenwick is not a building. Fenwick is not a place. You did not just go to Fenwick. You ARE Fenwick!
Regards,
Fr. DePorres Durham, O.P.
President, Fenwick High School
A Letter from the President
While I do not know if I am the luckiest man on Earth, I cannot express enough how fortunate I am to be connected with such a great mission as Fenwick High School. In my travels around the country, in my attendance at local events, and in my day-to-day experiences at Fenwick, it remains as true as ever that today is a great day to be a Friar!
As president, I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to witness both the glorious success of our past and the inspiring work of our present. For more than 80 years, Fenwick High School has continued to provide not only an education in the essentials of academics, but more importantly a meaningful foundation that stays with Friars for the rest of their lives. As I tell our incoming freshmen and remind our current students, Fenwick is more than bricks and mortar, more than a school, more than the externals – We are Fenwick! You are Fenwick!

to freshmen from trained professionals on our faculty. Students will now have increased opportunity for the one-to-one attention that will enable them to thrive in our educational environment.
We have been blessed with a tremendous, dedicated faculty that prepares our students for college and beyond. Historically, we have long had a strong mentoring program to help our new teachers become acclimated to the culture and expectations of Fenwick. The Strategic Plan looks to expand this program by providing faculty mentors within each department to help develop the next generation of great educators. The veterans who will assume these roles are very excited to give back to the teaching profession by assisting these extremely talented young men and women in maximizing their potential.
Technology has become an essential part of the educational process. This Fal l our teachers walked into classrooms with brand new computers, thanks to generous donations from the Fathers’ Club, Mothers’ Club and those that believe in the mission of Fenwick High School. In addition, we have a brand new, state-of-the-art language lab which will enhance the experience of our s tudents in foreign language courses. One of the great challenges of any educational institution is to keep up with the cost of updating technology. We are very grateful that our community recognizes this and is able to provide the support we need. Our school is in a much better place because of it.
During the spring of 2011, we introduced our new Strategic Plan. This took place after countless hours of hard work from administration, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, past parents and board members. Throughout the process, we sought input from our various constituents through surveys, meetings, and storyboarding sessions. The result is a comprehensive plan that will carry us through the next five academic years. When developing the plan, our primary focus was to strengthen the educational experience of our students while giving our faculty the tools they need to enable all to excel. Several of these initiatives, featured below, were implemented this Fall.
Fenwick draws from a wide variety of different communities and grammar/middle schools. Our students do not come to Fenwick with the exact same educational experience. In recognition of this, we have started a transitional program for our freshmen who need help adjusting to the academic rigors of a college-preparatory experience. This program offers educational assistance
A Letter from the Principal
In the words of Henry James, “It is art that makes life, makes interest, makes importance . . . and I know of no substitute whatever for the force and beauty of its process.” Since my arrival in 1997, we have had an explosion of interest in the arts. Our choir and band programs continue to grow. For this school year we will have the addition of two new studio art courses. We continue to explore other areas of growth in the arts, but do so without impacting our core curriculum which has made us the school we are today.
This is just a sample of the richness of our new Strategic Plan. Each year we hope to implement other aspects of the plan. This institution has evolved significantly over the years and will continue to do so. However, we will always remain committed to providing a faith-filled, Dominican education for our students. We as a school were founded on these principles and our mission is meaningless if we stray. Whether one graduated in 1951 or 2011, there is a common experience that makes a community of Friars. In the words of St. Thomas Aquinas,
Regards,
Peter Groom
Principal, Fenwick High School

While a student at Fenwick, Danielle McCarthy recalls memories of sitting in Fr. Gambro’s Latin class. Whenever he heard a fire truck or ambulance speeding by outside, he stopped what he was doing and said a silent prayer. One day he explained to the class that he did this because regardless of the circumstances, wherever that fire truck or ambulance was headed, the person on the receiving end was having a bad, stressful day, so he prayed for them in their state of emergency.
Last July, Danielle followed her calling as an attending physician in Emergency Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She also completed a research fellowship funded by the NIH (National Institutes of Health). She is working towards a Masters in Health Services Research and conducting research with a focus on examining the communication barriers between doctors and patients in the emergency room.
Achievement, however, is nothing new to Danielle, who is one of five McCarthy sisters, all of whom have attended Fenwick. A standout in the classroom and in water polo, Danielle also excelled at Fenwick in volleyball and as a member of the JETS team. She claims her proudest achievement at Fenwick was being selected by her classmates to speak at graduation.
Danielle attended college at Harvard, where she graduated Magna cum Laude in 2002 with a degree in History of Science. While at Harvard, she was a four year starter on the women’s water polo team and was named
captain her senior year. From there she pursued her medical degree at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. As a med student, she was awarded an alumni academic scholarship and earned acceptance to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She earned an MD in 2006. She continued her residency training in Emergency Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. And during her final year of training, she was selected as Chief Resident.
Despite an impressive list of accolades, Danielle attributes her tremendous work ethic to the time she spent at Fenwick. In her spare time, she acts as an interviewer for Harvard Admissions. Every year she interviews the applicants to Harvard from Fenwick. She states that she still finds Fenwick students bright, interesting and possessing a diverse range of interests.
Danielle has come a long way from the days in Fr. Gambro’s Latin class, and working in an emergency room, she hears and sees a lot more ambulances now than in the past. However, she remembers what Fr. Gambro said, and in a business where it is easy to become jaded, it helps her to retain empathy for her patients.

Fenwick has a New Athletic DirectorAfter 21 years of serving as Athletic Director, Michael Curtin has taken on the role as Associate
Athletic Director and passed the torch to Fenwick faculty member and alum, Scott Thies.
Throughout his tenure, Curtin has developed a successful athletic program while always emphasizing
academics. There have been several memorable sporting events during his era, which includes a
staggering 21 state titles. Curtin was instrumental in the development of the girls’ sports programs
when Fenwick became a co-educational school in 1992. He also managed the construction of a
new gymnasium and the addition of a wrestling room that has produced three state champions. He
will remain involved in the athletic department and coach boys’ golf. Curtin has no doubt that Thies
is the right person for the job. “Essentially the management style won’t change much. Scott’s not
hung up on the title or the power of such a position. It’s about the athletic development of the kids
and keeping the high academic standards of the high school. He’s doing a great job.”
A 1999 Fenwick graduate, Scott Thies has been a faculty member and football, basketball and
lacrosse coach at Fenwick for eight years. Scott has continued a legacy of former football coaches
that went on to become athletic director at Fenwick. “I have learned a lot from Mike Curtin about
leading the athletic department. Mike has been a mentor and friend throughout this transition.”
Scott continued, “Fenwick has a unique tradition of excellence in the classroom and athletics.
While maintaining this tradition, I think it is so important that our students have the ability to take
on leadership roles and acquire certain skills in athletics that will prepare them for the next phase
in life.”

Remembering our Coach & Friend, Dave PerryAfter a valiant and brave fight with cancer, on September 11,
2011, the Fenwick community lost a very special man – Water
Polo Coach Dave Perry. Perry is the most successful water
polo coach in the state history amassing a total of 17 state
championships, including eight consecutive IHSA sanctioned
state titles. The team won 51 straight games between the
2006 and 2007 seasons and went undefeated (36-0) in
2011 to earn their eighth state title. In a wheelchair for the
championship game, Perry coached the team to victory with
his son, Kyle. At the all-school pep rally recognizing the state
championship, the players touted Perry as their inspirational
presence throughout the state tournament saying, “this one
was special and we all wanted to win it for Coach Perry.”
Perry owns an astounding 757-143-2 career record in 31
years at Fenwick and Mount Carmel and a 675-70-1 record
in his 23 years at Fenwick. He is a member of the Illinois
Water Polo Hall of Fame, Illinois Swimming Association Hall
of Fame, Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame and has
been named Coach of the Year countless times.
“Coach Perry leaves a tremendous legacy at Fenwick as a
dedicated and compassionate teacher, coach and friend,”
says Fenwick President, Fr. DePorres Durham. “Although he
has amassed incredible records and accolades throughout
his water polo career, his generous heart and courageous
spirit are to be most celebrated and remembered. We keep
in our prayers the Perry family – his wife Marianne and
children and Fenwick faculty members, Kyle and Liz, as
well as the countless individuals who were better for having
known Coach Perry.”
Dave’s wake was held at Fenwick High School in the
Lawless Gymnasium on Friday, September 16, 2011. The
extraordinary outpouring of support from the Fenwick
community, fellow coaches, high school teams and state
and conference administrators was a true testament to
the lasting and significant impact Dave had on the lives he
touched.

Fenwick showcases Student Art
The semester ended at Fenwick in early June with
a flurry of matting and last-minute tweaking of art
projects, as the Survey of Studio Art class set up their
Student Art Exhibit for Spring 2011. Open to students,
faculty and parents, the Art Exhibit showed the work
of 18 students who had spent the semester exploring
drawing, photography, batik, block and screen printing,
wire sculpture, ceramics and acrylic painting. The
Survey of Studio Art course introduces students
to various media. In the following semesters they
can continue studying in greater depth one or more
2-dimensional or 3 -dimensional media. Fenwick also
offers an AP Art History course in which students can
seek college credit.
Rev. Michael Winkels, O.P., the Survey of Studio Art
teacher, commented, “Fenwick students are bright and
talented. It is really amazing to see the creative and
artistic talent that has blossomed in my students over
the past three semesters. They are truly gifted! The Art
Exhibit is a means of showing the Fenwick community
just how talented they are in the visual arts.” This is
the third semester the school has offered a revamped
Survey of Studio Art course. Next year the school will
begin offering advanced courses in 2-dimensional
and 3 -dimensional art. Fenwick, since its founding
in 1929, has been known for its strong math and
science programs. In the past several years and with
a new strategic plan adopted by the Fenwick Board of
Trustees this past year, more emphasis is being placed
on the arts. Increased enrollment in band, choir and the
various studio courses exhibits the enthusiasm that the
students have for creative outlets in their lives. With
the development of a stronger arts program, Fenwick
will continue to educate the whole person in new and
exciting ways.

Fenwick Recognizes Contributions of James S. Watts M.D. ‘51 with the St. Martin De Porres Award
Born in Chicago in 1934, Dr. James “Scully” Watts was the sixth of
seven children to Myrtle and Walter Watts. In 1947, he graduated
from St. Thomas Aquinas Grammar School in Chicago and from
Fenwick in 1951. While at Fenwick, he was the featherweight
division boxing champion and participated in the intramural
program all four years. After only three years of college, Dr. Watts
finished his undergraduate studies at Loyola University in 1954 and
graduated from the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in 1958.
Dr. Watts completed a one-year internship at Mercy Hospital and
did his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Lewis Memorial
Hospital. He joined his brother, Walter, in private practice locally.
The two Watts brothers practiced together for seven years until
James was drafted in 1966 in the “Doctor’s Draft” during the
Vietnam War. With a large family of six and one on the way, Dr.
Watts moved his family to Texas to serve in the Air Force. He served
in the Air Force as a Captain and was responsible for the complete
operation of the Bergstrom Air Force Base Hospital in Austin, TX.
In 1968, Dr. Watts returned to Chicago, went into private practice
and was on staff at St. Anne’s Hospital. Three years later, he joined
Dr. Jack Picchetti and Dr. Ralph Ryan ‘42 in an OB/GYN practice
in Elmhurst. The three practiced together for more than 25 years.
Throughout his career, Dr. Watts delivered more than 2,500

counseling and assistance - generously offering to have them stay
in his own home before the delivery. He also arranged adoptions for
couples that were unable to have children. After retiring in 2000, he
volunteered his medical services to Catholic Charities and during a

Not only is Jamie Carey a Professor of Law at Loyola Uni-versity, but his career and honors reflect a highly respected mind in the Chicago and Illinois legal community. Having been a member and chair of the Chicago Bar Association, Carey has also served on the Illinois Supreme Court’s Capi-tal Litigation Trial Bar Screening Committee. Additionally, he has written articles and published a book through the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.
Nonetheless, Carey possesses a humble side which allows him to maintain a careful perspective. In fact, he recounts a Fenwick experience which helped shape his ethical char-acter.
“ ...out of sheer (moral) laziness during a biology quiz I gazed longingly - and long - upon another student’s an-swers. Fr. Holzer caught me and gave me a proper dress-ing down for this attempt at cheating. I was ashamed, but what has remained with me is the reaction of other teach-ers, Mr. Ludwig for one, whose reaction was of dismay and disappointment rather than being punitive. I realized they had expectations for me and that I had let them down. This did more for my moral development than any JUG or ha-rangue could have accomplished. Gene WolandeClass of ‘74
Fenwick can claim a number of alumni who have distinguished themselves in Hollywood on the big and small screen, most recently Aimee Garcia ’98 and Mick Betancourt ’92. However, Gene Wolande has quietly established an impressive pastiche of writing and acting film roles which has spanned over three decades. More than likely he’s that actor you recognize but don’t know the name since he isn’t a headliner. It’s a long road he’s taken since the days as a member of Fenwick’s Blackfriars Guild, “I actually went kicking and screaming into Banua the first year because I was pretty shy,” he reflects. “But being on stage turned out to be fun.”
Following his graduation from Fenwick in 1974, Gene pursued a double major in drama and economics at the University of Dallas and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Directing and Acting from Trinity University. Working in professional regional theatre, he balanced his time between directing, acting, and playwrighting at the Dallas Theatre Center, where he was a resident company member for several years.
At 30, opportunity took him to Los Angeles, where he continued his writing career, working on such shows as The Wonder Years. An episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was nominated for a Humanitas Prize by the Writer’s Guild of America, and recently, a new play of his, the romantic comedy The Cost of Living, won a Writer’s Digest playwrighting award.
As an actor, Gene has most recently been seen as a recurring guest star on the HBO series, Carnivàle. He appeared as Ray Pinker in the 1997 classic L.A. Confidential, as Samuel L. Jackson’s lawyer in The Negotiator, with John Travolta in A Civil Action, Mike Nichol’s What Planet Are You From, Best Laid Plans with Reese Witherspoon, Robocop, and with Robert Downey, Jr. in Chaplin. On television, he has guest-starred on numerous shows including, Party of Five, ER, Desperate Housewives, and recently worked with Sydney Poitier in Oprah Winfrey’s remake of David and Lisa.
His feature writing career expands with the heart-wrenching character-driven thriller Timeframe, the turn of the century drama Slivers Oakley, and the modern romantic farce Loving Ebeneezer.
His writing/directorial debut, a short feature, Three Shots, was honored as an official selection in the 2001 New York International Film Festival, the Ashland Independent Film Festival, the Sarasota International Film Festival and the Director’s View Festival.
Gene continues his work as a writer, actor and director and always tries to find time to stay involved and connected with his Fenwick roots on Washington Boulevard. This past Spring, Gene was honored as the 2011 recipient of the St. Genesius Award, in recognition of his meritorious accomplishments in the Performing Arts.

The Fenwick Young Alumni Association, which includes the Fenwick classes from 1995-2011, has had another very successful year. Under the leadership of former President Mike Megall ’95, the Fenwick Young Alumni Association hosted their main events, including the Young Alumni
Wine Tasting, the Christmas Wrapped Up in Friar Pride
gift drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sisters of Chicago, and the Young Alumni Boat Cruise, which took place on the Fort Dearborn on June 24, 2011. This year’s Young Alumni Boat Cruise had 164 attendees and raised funds through FriarsChoose.org, which directly benefitted the students who currently attend Fenwick.
Much of the success can be attributed to the leadership of the Young Alumni Board, the wonderful sponsors of all of the events and the class representatives, who have done a terrific job of driving attendance at these events.
On March 5, 2011 the young alums participated in a service
day at nearby, St. Angela’s School on Chicago’s west side. Fenwick young alumni, staff, parents, current students, St. Angela’s students and Fenwick/St. Angela’s alums teamed up to help re-paint the hallways in preparation for St. Angela’s spring open house. The students were very appreciative and one of them sent us the Thank You note pictured. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved and was a great opportunity to help a fantastic school like St. Angela’s.
Brian Roche ‘03 will take the reigns as the new President of the Young Alumni Association. Thank you to all Fenwick Young Alums who have participated in these events and we look forward to your future involvement! Please contact Caleb Fields ‘03, Manager of Alumni Relations, at cfields@fenwickfriars.com or 708-386-0127 x199 for more information about the Young Alumni Association or to become involved as a class representative.

A planned gift is a gift we plan in this lifetime to give from our next lifetime after we are born to eternal life. Planned gifts can take many forms. They can be life insurance policies, bequests of cash or stocks, trusts and annuities. Planned gifts can provide cash flow in a donor’s lifetime and reduce the tax burden upon surviving loved ones. They frequently require legal and financial counsel to draft the optimum plan for the donor’s unique circumstances.
Fenwick has retained the services of PhilanthroCorp to provide counsel at no cost to its planned gift donors. PhilanthroCorp is a faith-based provider of planned giving services for Christian charitable organizations.
Please consider joining the Reverend William Bernacki, O.P. Planned Giving Society by making a planned gift to Fenwick. If you have already done so, please accept our gratitude and kindly so inform us. If you have not already done so, please contact Dr. Jerry Lordan (708-386-0127 ext. 114) in the Fenwick Development Office to discuss how together we can facilitate that process. Where there is a will, there is a way.
Fenwick introduces FriarsChoose.org
FriarsChoose.org is an on-line initiative designed to
engage Fenwick supporters with the current efforts
and needs of the school. It offers an on-line donation
platform allowing members of the Fenwick community
all across the country to now select a specific program
or initiative they would like to support. The projects on
FriarsChoose will incorporate all functions of the school
including academic and departmental efforts, athletic
teams, the arts programs and various extracurricular
activities. All of the FriarsChoose projects are requested
directly from the department chair, teacher, coach or
moderator responsible for that project. Explore www.
friarschoose.org and help support your favorite program
at Fenwick!
Fenwick High School has formed the Reverend William Bernacki, O.P. Planned Giving Society as a way not only to honor one of the most loyal members of our community, but also to provide financial security to the ministry he has served so well for so long in so many ways.
Fr. Bernacki’s life is a powerful witness to the Friar mission. After a childhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side, he served with the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and attended Loyola University on the GI Bill. Father is a member of his alma mater’s Athletic Hall of Fame for his stellar participation on its golf team. He came to Fenwick in 1959 and since then he has been a teacher, coach, president-principal and Life Trustee. He is also a member of the Fenwick Hall of Fame.
Father has given consistently in many ways of his time and talent to advance Fenwick’s priceless contribution to American society. Similarly, there are many ways such as annual fund donations, major gifts and capital campaign pledges for us to contribute our treasure to advance Fenwick’s positive influence on our society. Of all these ways, a planned gift is the most effective to support Fenwick.
