Not all publications are equal (for your future career)

• International peer-reviewed journals are the gold standard + publish in the highest status you can manage

• Don’t know the status of journals in your field? You don’t read enough!

• Abstract ranking

• But also depends on the type and topic of your work

(for example: Social science and medicine vs Sociology of health and illness = more or less interdisciplinary audience; OR Bioethics vs American journal of bioethics = different debates taking place)

• Think twice before putting your material into chapters in edited collections

• Conference proceedings are not “publications”

• Book/conference reviews barely count (they are not peer-reviewed)

• Co-authorship: depends on the field but being in the middle of some 20 names doesn’t count for much

• For those in ‘book’ fields: edited collections do not count as much as solo authored books! And consume much more time than you expect

• The development of the ‘open access publising’ model has led to an explosion of new online journals, some of which are designated as ‘predatory’
