Fluid Pressure

Fluid Pressure

Fluid-A material that can easily flow, has

fluid motion, and can change its shape Two types of fluid would be a liquid or a gas.

#2 What Causes Fluid Pressure

All the forces exerted by the individual particles are combined to make up the pressure exerted by the fluid

Total force exerted by the fluid/ the area over which the fluid is exerted

Air Pressure

#3 : Air (the mixture of gases that makes up the Earths Atmosphere)

#4: They press down on everything on Earth’s surface all the time– Air exerts pressure because it has mass

#5: Gravity pulls down on this mass of air- which makes the air have weight. The weight of the air is the force that produces air pressure

Air Pressure

# 6: The pressure of the Earth’s atmosphere is exerted on your hand in all directions!

Can you hold the weight of a washer machine?

In stationary fluids, pressure at a given point is exerted equally in all directions.

Homework: Create a rough draft of a Paragraph or Poster- Describing the relationship between Pressure and Depth, or Pressure and Elevation-- Due Friday

Do Now-Please Open notebook to pg. 73/74 &-Open textbook to pg. 78

# 7 When pressure is unbalanced?

Look at figure 4: on pg.76The outside force of the air pressure outside

of the object will crush the object because the forces are unbalanced, inside and outside of the object.

Crush can demo?

Draw a diagram on pg. 75 in NB

1. Draw a beaker, like the one below, filled with water.

2. Label the fluid pressures acting on the beakers by putting arrows in all the places that fluid pressure is being exerted.

Is there a difference between Elevation and Altitude?

Click icon to add pictureElevation is the height above sea level, (Used for Mountain ranges and land above sea-level)

Altitude is the height above the surface of the Earth at a particular location (Used for height of objects such as planes.)

Variations in Fluid Pressure

# 8 : Why is there less air pressure at higher elevations, like at the top of a mountain?

-There is less air above you , so there is less air pressure- As your elevation increases, atmospheric pressure decreases

#9) When you go up in elevation, there is less air pressure, so the air pressure behind your eardrums is greater than it is in the air outside your body. This pressure being released to balance the pressures is what makes the “popping” sound.

Variations in Fluid Pressure

#10) Water pressure depends on depth of the water (how deep the water is)

Water pressure increases as depth increases

Look over Figure 5 on pgs. 78/79

Choose ONE of the following below: Use the information in figure 5 to:1) Make a poster that shows the relationship

between pressure and elevation OR the relationship between pressure and depth. (Need to use captions)

2) Write a description that reports the relationship between pressure and elevation and pressure and depth
