Women’s Wear Daily Cosmetics - September 12, 2012
Women’s Wear Daily Cosmetics - September 12, 2012!
! The world famous designer, Karl Lagerfeld was present on September 1, 2012 in
Paris for the launch of a limited edition collection. The holiday collection he created was
for the Japanese cosmetics brand, Shu Uemura. Mr. Lagerfeld created a cartoon
spokesmodel that depicted the ever famous Japanese anime cartoons. The cartoon
character, Mon Shu is depicted with the ever classic Karl Lagerfeld attire. Mon Shu wore
the ever classic high white collar and black tie that Karl Lagerfeld has made famous,
which went along with her red eyes and pitch black bob that Karl designed.
! I found Mon Shu particularly delightful, the character itself brings out the kid in all
of us reminding us of the world famous Japanese cartoon characters we would see from
a young age. One thing I found a bit odd was the red eyes, but then again that catches
your attention automatically and it goes great with the shade of pink blush used on her
cheeks as well as with the red lips.

Ad Age Fashion Industry - October 15, 2012
! After a solid 92 years of having women represent their luxury perfume, Chanel
has named the famous actor, Brad Pitt as its new face for the scent. Brad Pitt is in
Chanel’s commercial for Chanel No. 5 in s simple button down shirt with his hands in his
pants for most of the media advertisement. The commercial which is approximately
thirty seconds was directed by Joe Wright, a commercial that lacks enthusiasm and
glamour.
! This commercial definitely represents Brad Pitt’s laid-back personality, which is
why many might say it lacks enthusiasm. I was ecstatic when I found out that Brad Pitt
would be the face of Chanel No. 5, but a bit disappointed when I saw the advertisement
that had been created. I would have loved for the commercial to stick to Chanel’s
classic, glamourous, and movie-like commercials. It would have been great to see Brad
in a suit and his hair slicked back. Whatever the critics may be, the advertisement sure
is receiving plenty of attention and that is what Chanel intended after-all.

! When you think of velvet you mostly likely think of historical festivals from years
ago or its rebirth in the eighties. This fall, velvet will be a huge hit regarding trends. All
the famous fashion houses are doing their part for their brand to have an item that goes
with the trend. Velvet is taking over everything from accessories to clothes to shoes.
Versace came out with a black velvet coat and adding a touch of printed jewels to go
with the material of the coat. The designer Jason Wu came out with a pair of heels with
velvet straps. As for Junya Watanbe, they created a rebellious look by coming out with a
velvet biker jacket. Velvet is no longer a faux pas, it is definitely “in” this season.
! I have never particularly been fond of velvet, the feel of the material itself annoys
me. I do think it is a great idea that designers are going out of the box when using the
fabric. Designers are using for a special detail in a product or as the material itself for a
specific product. I have indeed seen the material being used by luxury brands as well as
moderate priced brands as well. Everyone wants to take part in the trend, the most I
have seen the material being used is in leggings. Leggings itself is a huge trend among
women of all ages.
Fashion Observation - Fall 2012
! There is a specific fashion trend that I have been keeping a close eye on, which
happens to be leather or faux leather. The trend is being used by women and men of all
ages as well as children. I have noticed this fashion trend on a daily basis on the streets
of Chicago, in fashion magazines, and in fashion blogs as well. In the Fall of 2011,
leather or faux leather slowly started to come out as a fashion trend. I noticed multiple
retail stores selling leather or faux leather jackets, which is something I had not seen
since the late 90s. Then this season the leather and faux leather trend began to peek in
even more. The fashion trend is currently at its peak in the fashion trend cycle.
Currently, leather or faux leather is being seen in leggings, skirts, shorts, and tops. One
huge fashion trend with this material are A-lined skirts as well as peplum leather tops.
This trend is different from that of fall 2011 because of the amount of different products
using the material. In the fall of 2011 it was seen in jackets, but in the Fall of 2012 we
see it in other clothing merchandise. The material is going to be a huge trend for this
holiday season.
Store Trends
! Walking through the Macy’s store, I noticed the bamboo material as I was walking from section to section. In the shoe section, I noticed a pair of high heels with the heel being made of bamboo. In the kitchen section of Macy’s, I noticed bamboo cutting boards each being different shapes and figures. As I proceeded to walk through the store, I found a selection of bamboo placemats, which I had seen at other stores before as well. ! I noticed the fall color trends in every section of the Macy’s. In the shoe section I found flats, pumps, and boots in natural colors such as browns and greens. In the home decor section I found different items, such as center pieces, with different fall color shades in one item. I also found the natural fall colors in the store displays as well, the mannequins wore apparel with soft natural colors.! One type of fabric that I noticed throughout the store was lace. The women’s apparel included plenty of lace items such as dresses and tops. Even the holiday gift sets were adorned with lace ribbons and a touch of sparkle. As I walked past the kitchen section, I noticed a holiday apron that had lace details on the pockets. ! Another major trend throughout the Macy’s department store was that of the color gold. The color is extremely popular in women’s apparel for holiday outfits. In the shoe department I noticed gold spiked heels as well as flats. Walking even more even the chocolate candies strategically placed by the cash register were all wrapped in gold foil. ! The last trend I noticed at the Macy’s store was that of leopard prints. The leopard prints were everywhere in the women’s apparel section as well as the little girl’s apparel section. In the shoe department they had leopard slippers, pumps, and loafers. Heading to the lower level at Macy’s, I walked past the travel section. Here I found suitcases as well as carry-ons with the leopard print in various colors. I proceeded to go to the accessories section and found everything from watches to computer cases covered in leopard print.
WGSN Trend Reports
! Going through the WGSN website, I automatically stumbled upon one of the
trends I noticed at Macy’s. On the homepage I noticed what appeared to be a men’s
sweater in gold. I also noticed a great deal of natural colors in both women and men’s
apparel; grays, beiges, and greens. Continuing on to scrolling through the homepage, I
noticed a pair of women’s intimate garments in the lace material I came across in the
Macy’s department store. My research going through the WGSN homepage most
definitely backs up the research I found at Macy’s. Most of the trends I happened to
notice at the department store were mentioned or showed in the homepage of the
website. This means a great deal, it goes to show that the trends I spotted are indeed
some of the major trends going on in the United States and around the world.

Global Trends
! In the country of China, silk and flowers are a huge trend in their clothing. We
have begun to see a silk trend in the United States, but I do believe that the silk trend
will continue to reach its peak. The flower trend has also been peeking out as of this
summer even being seen during the fall season. Club Monaco has been selling a great
deal of silk tops and this fall season I began to notice silk shorts at a few retail stores.
The tuxedo trend has been hitting the United States as of lately, in Brazil the tuxedo
pants have more of a flair to them on the sides. BCBG has featured tuxedo pants in
their collection this season, they have been mixing up the line by having it be leather or
faux leather. I think we will begin to see tuxedo pants just as the ones featured in Brazil.
Visual Displays
! These are two displays for the Target and Neiman Marcus collaboration, they are
located at a Target in the southwest suburbs. I particularly like the first display because
it features an actual advertisement with both the retailers’ logo on them. I also like the
facial expression that the model is making in the advertisement, it reminds me of the
facial expression I made when I found out over summer that the two retail stores and a
select few designers would team up for a holiday collection. The second display I like
because the items placed there were done so on purpose, with a bike you are always
on the go as well as with a luggage. Both items represent traveling and going at a fast
pace.
TV Trend
! This is a television show I discovered because of my mother who watches it
religiously. From the first episode I watched I noticed off the bat that the characters had
a love for fashion. Like the title of the show, this show is all about revenge and seeking
justice. A trend that I mostly likely believe will emerge is that of the leather or faux
leather craze that began last fall of 2011. The main character wears a great deal of
darker tones such as your blacks, grays, and navies. She also wears a great deal of
red, which is the color of blood and revenge. The leather and faux leather trend show
add spunk to your look and give off a touch of attitude, this is the reason I believe I will
see a great deal of this trend in the show. The main character is all about revenge and
being taken as a strong woman.
Designer Collections
! My favorite designer collection from the First View website is Patricia Motta’s
Ready-to-Wear Fall/Winter 2013 collection. I believe that the retailer that would include
the designer’s collection is definitely a luxury retailer. For example, some luxury retailers
are Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Barney’s New York. My favorite design
from the whole Fall/Winter 2013 collection would have to be the printed pants shown
above. My favorite part about the pants is the gold touch added to them as well as an
elegant print that is not too gaudy, but simply perfect. This product is great for the
holiday season and does not need an extravagant top as the details of the pants do it
justice.
Career Descriptions
! A Fashion Designer is someone is someone who designs clothes, accessories,
or shoes. Some designers create their own brand of clothing and others work for an
existent brands. The Fashion Designers must study fashion trends and come up with
their own ideas by sketching multiple drafts until they reach their final piece. From there
the Designer sends it off for it to come to life.
! A Fashion Buyer is someone who works on their own or for a retailer. They
attend fashion shows and trunk shows where they spot specific items that they believe
would be a perfect fit with the store they work for and negotiate with the designer for a
certain amount of the product. The buyer must be responsible of trend overviews,
budgeting, merchandise, as well as the business side, which includes sales and
negotiating with the designer or wholesaler.
! The Product Development Manager is someone who is responsible for managing
or developing products for a store, designer, or wholesaler. They basically are more of a
business position, which involves marketing whatever the brand or product may be.
They must set goals for themselves and accomplish such goals and tasks.
Fashion Don’ts
This whole outfit is a definite fashion don’t or faux pas from
head to toe. The velvet slippers as well as the velvet suit
simply screams out too much velvet. The gold pattern in the
suit and the gold pattern in the neck high blouse makes the
eye confused as to wear to focus on. She does not even
know how to make up her mind regarding her hair. The
prints are too much and each piece would be great
separately.
This is a fashion faux pas from the actual dress itself as
well along with the accessories. The printed clutch is a
great fit for a nigh out but is a pattern that exhausts the eye
when viewing it along with the flower printed dress. I am not
sure if the black portion on the chest is a bib or whether it is
attached to the actual dress. The pointed-toe heels go well
with the dress but get lost along with the tights. The belt at
the waist of the dress is is cute, but would go better with a
solid colored dress.
You can never go wrong with a little black dress, but in this
occasion you can. The mini dress is cute from the waist up, but
from the bottom down it is a disaster. The fringes in the middle of
the bottom half seem as though they are the curtains to an
opening show. The top half of the dress appears to be a bustier
style dress, adding the fringes in the bottom make the dress
appear a tad promiscuous
For many, this look might be a fashion do, but for me it is a
fashion don’t. She is a young and beautiful woman who needs
to add a little spunk to her outfit. The yellow clutch adds a great
accessory. The pointed toe heels remind me of a witch, while
the dress seems like something that a woman in her 40s might
wear. The overall look is boring and plain Jane. She could have
added a statement necklace for the look to be more exciting.
The pointed toe heels should have been a pair of black suede
pumps to add a more youthful look.
Career Opportunities
! One of the careers that I am highly interested in is to hold a social media position
for a retail store or designer. The position would bring Marketing and fashion in the
same position for me. I absolutely love Marketing as well as fashion, it is a perfect fit for
someone like me. You are able to use the business side of Marketing by planning
strategic Marketing plans, but also brings the fun and creative side of fashion into the
position.
! Being a Fashion Buyer would be a great fit to me in my opinion. I have worked in
retail and am good at memorizing specific merchandise as well as persuading
customers to purchase the specific product. I am great at persuading individuals and
never give up on something I want as well as great at bargaining.
! I would be interested in a position in fashion blogging. I have experience in
blogging for multiple internships as well as for my own personal uses. I follow trends
very closely on multiple fashion sites and blogs. I have multiple social media accounts
and on each account I have a huge following, more than a regular social media user
might have.
