AlmightyKing,”itslyricsareofficiallyanonymous.Regardlessofwhatwedon’tknowofthissong;however,wedoknowthatithasbeenananthemfortheChristianChurchformanyyears.InthedaysoftheAmericanRevolution,alocalcongregationinLongIslandwasmeetingtogethertoworship.TheirmeetingwasinterruptedasabandofHessiantroopsbargedinandcommandedthechurchtosing,“GodSavetheKing.”1Inthefaceofadversity,theyinsteadshowedtheirallegiancetothetrueLordoftheirlivesbysinging,“ComeThouAlmightyKing.”1ThiscongregationobviouslyunderstoodandbelievedthetruthweseeinRomans8:31—“IfGodisforus,whocanbeagainstus?”Inourreadingforthisweek,weseethatthenationofIsraelstruggledtounderstandGod’sfaithfulleadingandprovision.TheyfailedtorealizethatHewasworthyoftheirtrustandinsteadwerecontrolledbytheirownfeelingsoffearandself‐sufficiency.Throughthistragedy,however,JoshuaandCalebwereshiningexamplesofdevotioninthemidstofhardshipanduncertainty.Wechose“Come,ThouAlmightyKing”forthisweek,becauseweasafaithfamily,likeJoshuaandCaleb,swearourallegianceonlytotheKingofKings.WelongforHimto“reignoverus,”asweboldlyofferourliveseverydaytobringHimglory.1.Price,CarlFowler.OneHundredandOneHymnStories.NewYork:TheAbingdonPress,1923,page101.

SUGGESTIONSThesesuggestionswerecreatedtohelpparentsbettercommunicatethebiblicaltruthsdiscussedintheFamilyWorshipGuide.Theseactivitiesandquestionscanreplaceorserveasasupplementtothequestionsunderthe‘Read’sectiononPage 1. Remember, these suggestions are intended to help parents facilitate God‐centered discussions with theirchildren. Parents should prayerfully use these suggestions, and any other means necessary, to help their childrendiscoverthetruthsofGod’sWordandworshipHimtogether.

Preschool(Birth‐Kindergarten)o Beforeyoubegin,gatherapieceoffabricorsomethingyoucanuseasablindfold.

Youwillalsoneedafewobjectsplacedaroundtheroomforyourchildtostepover.(Example:shoesortoys)o TellyourchildwearelearningabouthowGodwantsustotrustHimevenwhenwedon’tknowwhatisgoingto

happennext.o TrustingGodmeansobeyingGodandbelievingthatHewilltakecareofus.Say,“I’mgoingtoputthisblindfoldover

youreyesandwearegoingtotakeawalktogetheraroundtheroom.Iwillholdyourhandandguideyousoyouwillknowwheretogoandwhattodo.DoyoubelieveandtrustthatIwillwatchoutforyou?Nowlet’stryit.”

o Placetheblindfoldonyourchildandguidethemaroundtheroom.Whenyoucometoanobstacle,likethepairofshoes,haveyourchildstopandtellthem,“There’sapairofshoesinfrontofyou.Youwillneedtostepovertheshoessothatyouwon’ttripandfall!”Repeatthisprocesswiththeotherobjects.

o Whenyouarefinished,removetheblindfoldandaskyourchild,“Didyoufollowmyinstructionsandstepovertheobjects?Didyoufalldown?No,becauseIhelpedyouandyoufollowedmydirections.Youtrustedmetohelpyoumovearoundtheroomeventhoughyoucouldn’tseewhereyouweregoing!”

o GodwantsustotrustHim,too.GodwantsustofollowHimandHisrules.JustlikeIshowedyouhowtomovearoundtheroom,Godwillalwaysshowyoutherightway.WecanalwaystrustGod!

Children(Grades1‐5)

o Forthisactivityyouwillneedtocreateasimpleobstaclecourseinyourlivingroom.Theobstaclecourseshouldbebuiltinsuchawaythatyourblindfoldedchildmaywalkthroughitfromendtoend,butwouldneedstep‐by‐stepguidanceonyourparttopassthroughwithoutrunningintoanything.Slidecouchesover,bringinkitchenchairs,oranythingelsereadilyavailablewhichcanbesafelyusedtoconstructtheobstaclecourse.

o Oncethecoursehasbeensetup,selectoneofyourchildrentowalkthrough.Placeablindfoldonyourchildandguidethemtothestartofthecourse.Nowtellyourchildthatyouwillnolongerbephysicallyguidingthem.Standinaplacewhereyoucanseetheentirecourseandcalloutinstructionstoyourchildtoguidethemsafelythroughthecourse.Beginleadingthembycallingoutinstructionssuchas“takeonestepforward,”“turntoyourright,”etc.

o Onceyourchildmakesitthroughtheentirecoursesafely,havethemremovetheblindfold.Askhowtheywereabletomakeitthroughtheobstaclecoursewhentheycouldnotseeanything.(Bylisteningtoandobeyingyourinstruction.)Explainthatalthoughtheycouldnotsee,youcouldseeandyouknewexactlywhatstepstheyneededtotakeinorderforthemtocompletetheirtasksuccessfully.Askyourchildwhatwouldhavehappenediftheyhadnotlistenedtoyourvoicewhilenavigatingtheobstaclecourse.(Althoughitwasdifficulttonavigatetheobstaclecourse,itwouldhavebeenevenmoredifficultwithoutyourguidance.)

o Leadyourchildtounderstandthatjustasyousawthebigpictureandallofyourinstructionwasfortheirgood,soisGod’sinstructiontous.Itmayhavebeenscarynotbeingabletoseeintheobstaclecourse,butallofyourguidancewasfortheirgood.WearecalledtotrustGodeachday,placingcourageousfaithinHim.God’speopleinNumbers13‐14failedtoplacetheirtrustinGod,eventhoughHehadperformedmanywonderfulmiraculousdeedsinfrontofthem.NexttimeyouarefacedwithachoicetotrustGodornot,rememberjustasmomanddadknewbestintheobstaclecourse,soGodalwaysknowsbest.Heknowsallthings,HelovesHispeopledeeply,andHeisaltogetherwiseandgoodandtrue!BecauseGodismightyandloving,Hispeopleareabletoplaceradical,courageousfaithinHim.
