Family History ProjectPart 3Manuel Churchman

Immigration

One side of my family started in Jalpa, Zacatecas. From there they moved to La Puente, California for a better life.

The other side of my family started in Germany and immigrated to Pennsylvania, which they settled there till they moved to California.

Immigrants Ladder

When we came to California, my grandparents settled with other Hispanics in the community of La Puente.

Ports of Entry

This is where immigrants come through when they cross over to a new country.

In our family this was the border between Mexico and United States.

Waves of Immigration

My family was part of the first wave of immigration (1600-1820) on my fathers side.

My mothers side from Mexico was apart of the fourth wave of immigration.(1918-Present)

Jalpa, Zacatecas

This is where my family originally came from before they came to the United States.

Religion

Coming from a Jalpa, our family attained Catholicism and was passed down through the generations. This generation was the first to explore other religions.

Assimilation

Our family assimilated a couple things when they came to the United States.

-Food

-Transportation

-Music

-Culture

Rural to Urban Migration

Older generations lived on farms to make a living then as they moved to the United States, they settled in cities and got city jobs.

Push Factors

Jalpa, Zacatecas

Lack of job offers

- Low wages

Poor education

Health care

Lack of Electricity

Pull Factors

To the United States

Higher wages

Employment opportunities

Better education

Better life for the next generation

Tertiary Sector

My grandfather became apart of this sector when he settled in California.

He started working on the railroads.

Making rims for Airplanes.

Then became a lumber jack in Mt. Shasta.

Ethnic Neighborhoods

Settling in La Puente was an example of a Ethnic neighbor hood from my grandparents because of particular culture group.

Culture

Our culture of food, lifestyles, religion, and tradition were brought from older generations and still continued when we immigrated to California.
