About Belgian meat and Belgian Meat Office
The Belgian meat sector specializes in pork and beef. Since decades Belgian pork and beef is exported to many countries in the world. Over the generations, Belgian meat producers became real export specialists, meeting the needs of customers in over 60 countries.
The Belgian Meat Office coordinates pork and beef export activities. This meat export agency was founded in 2003 under the Flanders’ Agricultural Marketing Board (VLAM) umbrella.
Herd in Belgium
• 2018 Herds Pigs: 6,209,130, Cattle: 2,398,090
• Flanders (the northern region of Belgium) produces 94% of total pork production and 78% of total beef production in Belgium.
NO. 1 IN EUROPEAN MEAT MONITORINGBelgium is one of the leading meat exporters in Europe and is also a leader with regard to food safety. The concept of risk management and its use by Belgian companies is widely recognised across Europe.
INTENSIVE INSPECTIONS FROM THE FEED TO THE END USER
In Belgium the safety of the entire food chain comes under the authority of the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC - an independent agency). This is a unique feature in Europe. The FASFC incorporates all public health and agriculture inspection departments and monitors the compulsory self-audit systems of operators & the excellent traceability of their products.

CATTLE HERD IN BELGIUM
The Belgian cattle herd amounted to 2.4 million animals in 2018 and remains therefore stable compared to 2017.

PIG SLAUGHTERINGS IN BELGIUM
The number of pig slaughterings amounted to 11.2 million in 2018, a rise of 250,000 animals compared to the year before.
CATTLE AND VEAL SLAUGHTERINGS IN BELGIUM
The number of both the cattle as well as the veal slaughterings fell slightly back in 2018 and amounted to respectively 530,000 and 357,000 animals.

PRODUCTION OF PORK IN BELGIUM
The production of pork rose slightly in 2018 and amounted to 1.07 million tonnes. This led to an increase of almost 30,000 tonnes compared to 2017.
PRODUCTION OF BEEF AND VEAL IN BELGIUM
Both the beef as well as the veal production remained almost stable in 2018 compared to 2017. Almost 216,000 tonnes of beef was produced and 61,000 tonnes of veal.

The total Belgian exports of pork to the UK amounted to 35,190 tonnes in 2018 and increased by almost 10% compared to 2017. Around 60% of the pork exports to the UK consists of cuts, followed by carcasses, edible by-products and pig fat.

The graph below gives a more detailed representation of the export of pork cuts to the United Kingdom. The exports of fresh or chilled boneless cuts grew even more in 2018 and therefore remains the most important export product, followed by fresh or chilled bellies and fresh or chilled hams.

PURCHASE MEAT IN 2018 BY TYPE OF MEAT (in euro per capita)
In 2018 the total purchase of fresh meat for home use amounted to 168.78 euro. The Belgian consumer spent the most on beef and mixed meat. Contrary to the expenditures on mixed meat, consumers spent more money on beef than in 2017. However, the expenses on pork remained the same compared to the year before.

The main reason of the declining meat consumption is a decrease in purchase frequency. Consumers thus eat meat less frequently or eat smaller portions.
