What is Fab Lab?

What is Fab Lab?

• A fab lab (fabrication laboratory) is a small-scale workshop offering (personal) digital fabrication.

• A fab lab is generally equipped with an array of flexible computer-controlled tools that cover several different length scales and various materials, with the aim to make “almost anything”.

What happens in the Fab Lab?In the Fab Lab students…

• Express their creativity through 3D Printing, CNC Router, Vinyl Applications, Casting & Molding and more!

• Take a project through the design process all the way from the initial design to the final finishing touches.

• Learn and practice skills and how to safely use hand tools, power tools, and computer-assisted tools.

• Learn and practice how to work with a group to produce a tangible product.

We also provide services to the community and parents.

THE FABLAB PROCESS

What fabrication tools are available in the Fab Lab?

CNC Router

• A computer numerical control router (CNC) is a computer-controlled cutting machine related to the hand-held router used for cutting various hard materials, such as wood, composites, aluminum, steel, plastics, glass, and foams.

7

3D Printing

• The 3D printing process builds a three-dimensional object from a computer-aided design (CAD) model, usually by successively adding material layer by layer, which is why it is also called additive manufacturing.

8

Vinyl Cutting

• Vinyl cutters are mainly used to make signs, banners and advertisements. Advertisements seen on automobiles and vans are often made with vinyl cut letters.

• While these machines were designed for cutting vinyl, they can also cut through computer and specialty papers, as well as thicker items like thin sheets of magnet.

9

Laser Cutting

• Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials, and is typically used for industrial manufacturing applications, but is also starting to be used by schools, small businesses, and hobbyists.

• Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-power laser most commonly through optics.

10

T-shirt Screen Printing

• Screen Printing, which is also known as Silk Screening, is a great method of printing graphics on a t-shirt using thick inks that lay on top of the shirt rather than soaking into the shirt.
