• The purpose of Expository writing is to inform, clarify, explain, define, or instruct by giving information, explaining why or how, clarifying a process, or defining a concept. Well-written expository writing has a clear, central focus developed through a carefully crafted presentation of facts, examples, or definitions that enhance the reader’s understanding. These facts, examples, and definitions are objective and not dependent on emotion although the writing may be lively, engaging, and reflective of the writer’s underlying commitment to the topic.

• To simplify this definition: Explain = Expository.

• Focus on main topic

• Logical supporting facts

• Details, explanations and examples

• Strong organization

• Clarity

• Unity and coherence

• Logical order

• Smooth transitions

Expository essays are simply essays that explain something with facts, as opposed to opinion. Samples of expository essays include:

• Essays that described how to do something.

• Essays that analyze events, ideas, objects, or written works.

• Essays that describe a process.

• Essays that explain/describe an historical event.

Examples of Exposition

• Argumentative

• Discursive

• Persuasive

• Film Study

Pattern Description

Description -> The author describes a topic by listing characteristics, features, and examples.

Sequence -> The author lists items or events in numerical or chronological order.

Comparison -> The author explains how two or more things are alike and/or how they are different.

Cause and Effect -> The author lists one or more causes and the resulting effect or effects.

Problem and Solution -> The author states a problem and lists one or more solutions for the problem. A variation of this pattern is the question- and-answer format in which the author poses a question and then answers it.

Example of expository question

• Write a story about a trip you are going to take and what friend you want to take with you. Explain why this friend would be the best person to go with you.

• Introduction on topic

• Each contents paragraph :

1. Presentation of Idea

2. Relevant Evidence

3. Appropriate Discussion

• Conclusion
