It is a kind of method that interprets or explains a comprehensive topic or subject matter.

The teacher is completely in charge and guides the lesson. He/she is also in charge of the discussion and asks questions by calling on students for answers.

Uses of

EXPOSITORY

METHOD

1. When relevant information is needed to make the class understand a part in the lesson.

2. When pupils do not have the information and time can be saved by the teacher telling it.

3. When an idea or principle can be learned only by explanation.

4. Where the use of induction will take too much time to justify its use or wherever the difficulties of its use outweigh its value.

APPROACHThe proper mind-

set may be established by recalling past experiences related to the present lesson. The points to be explained must be placed before the class.

• PRESENTATIONWhile explaining, it might be well for the teacher to make use of the following principles:

•Relate the new to the

past experiences.

• Teacher and class should have the same view point regarding what is to be explained.

• Exposition means not only explaining but also interpreting.

• Materials should be organized so as to permit thinking.

• To make the explanation clear and effective, devices may be used such as:

1. Analogies and stories2. Illustrations3.Models4.Diagrams5.Demonstrations6.Outlines and Summaries to set

facts in proper relationship.

•ApplicationThis step will show

whether the pupils /students understands the explanation or not. It may be given in the form of a test, creative work or another activity.

Conditions

for Effective Exposition

1. The teacher’s thorough understanding of the subject matter to be explained.

2. The teacher’s comprehension of the students’ ability to understand the explanation.

3. The use of language and illustrations within the students’ experiences and understanding.
